As an FYI, most of the Composite Blade Shallot's (1840CBZDP) shipped last Friday.

It should be noted that there are a couple of changes from the original 1840CBZDP thread.

This Shallot's blade has a thickness of .090" which is quite a bit thinner than a stock Shallot's .121" blade. This in turn makes the entire piece substantially leaner than a standard Shallot.

We also opted on no etching on the ZDP-189/14C28N blade. The 2 steels did contrast enough that we felt OK doing a light bead finish. Strangely enough, these images make it seem like the blades carriage (14C28N) is actually darker than the edge (ZDP-189), when the opposite is true.

There looks to be around 1150 total knives produced, but I will have a final tally in the coming days. MSRP is at $124.95.

Here are a couple of images showing off the finished product:

Very nice indeed, Thomas ... and IMO the thinner blade stock is most appropriate.

A darksider-type question :): can you give us thickness immediately behind the edge on one of these? Hoping it's maybe .020" or less.

Thanks.

Damnit, DoW, you're going to get us in troubles again! Bet it will thin right out if the stock thickness doesn't please you. You might want to consider getting a Shun Elite paring knife and make a belt sheath if you need a blade that's Darksider-compliant right out of the box (0.01" at shoulder or less  ). It's not like the knife isn't going to be thinned out with your coarsest stone on receipt anyways.

Final product looks nice! That thinned out blade and ZDP should make for a hell of a slicer. Brad, our ENERG II's should lookout!!

Can't wait to play with one. I think a shiny black coating, maybe boron, would look really cool on a Shallot. Maybe someday.....

Jon;)

Now you got me wanting one too! Maybe a CB with Boron coating. hmmmm That would be nice. ;)
There's no telling what will happen with product from this company.
I've never seen one place crank out so many "usable" products.

:D

And to add to my multiple posts in this thread.

I LIKE the lighter color edged blade with the darker spine.
I think when it wears down from use it will change color anyway
like the CB Leek has done.
I've never "used" a ZDP blade before, handled a few, but never EDC'd before.
I'm very anxious to have this in hand.

Umm, Thomas....were these pictures taken at your desk at the office?? It looks like there's salt all over your desktop:confused: You're not....drinking margaritas again, are you?? You never call anymore when it's party time in Tualatin!!:p

Ohhh, now that does sound sweet. It's a kick @$$ blade as is, but a boron
coating.....that does sound sweet. :D

I kinda dig the no etch blade. A little something out of the norm for a CB.

LOL! Besides ... I know from my SG2/Ti JYD II, which IIRC is like .011" behind the edge, that there must be some with Darksider leanings working there at Kershaw. Plus I would hate to take the coarse stone to a knife as attractive as a Shallot. :)

Mine is shipping today I hope! I like thinner blades, so I look forward to giving this some good use in the kitchen. The leek has always been a good little emergency parer, and I look forward to seeing the CB shallot go to work on some food!

Will the difference be enough to keep us from frankenshallot-ing this one? Or will an extra washer or so make it work? I was really looking forward to putting this blade in a black handle!

I agree, I like the blade without the etching! Very nice appearance!

You shouldn't have any trouble so long as you transfer the shorter pivot to the new handle. I don't remember if this knife has a stop pin, but, if it does you would transfer that over as well. The lock angle and every thing else should be similar... or at least It seems likely it would be

I thought about that spiral, but there would also be a difference in the lock interface. Also, the back spacer would probably need to be thinned out a little...

Maybe GG could whip one up just to see. But then there would be a frankenshallot lying around, and what would he do with that?

(If you listen carefully, I think you can hear my tin cup!)

OK, from the ZDP you would have to have:
The pivot
The backspacer
The handle screws
The blade
The washers

From the other knife you would only need the handle slabs.

The lock bar interface would be hit and miss.... who knows you might get lucky:thumbup:
