Contest Kickoff

BOOOM LeatherRose Kicking it off right! first one jumping in and saying "IM Doing it!" way to to go girl, Got to say your going after some great goals. The wanting to be a good example for your chittlin is something special. :)

For those of you not wanting to put pictures on here feel free to email them to me or CD. I have no problem with that. I have a feeling you'll feel way more comfortable posting them AFTER you lose the weight. They really are nice to have to see where you were when you started. It's pretty cool to see the progess in photos.

congrats! i lost 90 pounds last year. i fell off the wagon for the past couple months after i moved and gained a few pounds back, but this inspired me to join a new gym today.

Mrs. S, now I know what you were referring to in Ratchat last night about the knife. Congratulations on the weight loss! You look great! And crowdog, you're a class act!

I'm 5'9" and 140 lbs. Jeff's first comment at SHOT last year when I introduced myself was "I thought you'd be taller." :D I'm not looking to lose any weight or enter the contest, but this thread reminds me that I want to start long distance running again. Great idea, guys--health is wealth! :)

I love this idea and think you did great Mrs. S! I have been trying to do my own change over the past year.

I ran a 7:16 mile with my dog Socs that day.

I am trying to keep it up, but like you said it gets hard when everyone around you is eating what all you used to eat. It's a hard thing to do and it takes some willpower. But when you look back at all you have accomplished is it not worth it? I will say it has changed my life for the better.

timeframe?
I understand starting now, but what's the end date for the prizes?
is this a see what you can do by May 1 kind of thing?

Congratulations Mrs. Shotty and everyone else who is taking steps to get in better shape! There is truly nothing else that can live up to the feeling of making such a positive change in ones life. I'm really proud of you. I've been running and weight lifting consistently for the last 2 months now. I'm
5'8" and weighed an all time high 194 lbs before I started my new regimen and I am now down to 181 lbs. I am fairly large framed and muscular so my goal is probably somewhere right around the 170 lb mark. I'd like to hear updates from everyone and I will post my results as well. Good stuff:thumbup:

great job katie!!!!! before I got married I weighed 240 lbs.....my wife kept on telling me that I could lose some weight just my changing my diet around...well, within the first year I dropped 20 lbs and after a year and a half I dropped 50 lbs......I'm 5'9 190lbs, and have been that way for the past 3 years...I eat healthy and walk outdoors as much as possible, I'll never go back to that lifestyle, this one is much better, and you can't explain how you feel so much better............great job :thumbup::thumbup:

That is a really great motivator and a blessing for some people (like me). I lost considerable weight 3 times in my life, the most I lost was over 105 lbs. (went from 270 @ a 42 inch waist to 165lbs and a 32 inch waist in a years time). It seems like every decade of my life I have gained and lost weight. Now Im back up to a heavy weight and would like to lose 80+lbs. Its difficult because its a lifestyle change. It is a long hard road to reach that goal and it requires maintenance once you are there. Nothing in life that is worth while comes easy. But for all you guys and gals that are taking the challenge, if you never lost weight, it is worth it. Every day I remember feeling better, I felt better about myself, and I know this is corny but honestly I felt lighter and moved better. Its worth looking forward to that day, because its a great feeling when your body is healthy and you will gain more self confidence and determination. Great project and contest!

Does weight loss have to be the goal, or just better fitness in general? 'cause I'm happy with my weight, I'm just shooting for better running, push-ups, and sit-ups.

I just started the wife is leaving me, and i have to get into dating shape diet....I hear this is one of the best fitness programs around.....lose weight or sleep alone....haha

Congratulations. 2 years ago i was 5"9 221 pounds, pretty heavy. I went on a 2 month diet and ate nothing but 1 cup of raisin bran/cawshey cereal for lunch, and 1 "healthy choice" prepared meal for dinner. I did this consistently for 2 months. I lost 61 pounds. I weighed 160 pounds. I then proceeded to go to gym and i slowly started eating right/more. I gained some muscles and packed on 12 pounds of it. I am now 5"9 and my weight fluctuates between 173-175 pounds. I realize that starving yourself is NOT healthy but i did it and it worked for me. The first week doing it was hell. After that, it became habit.

A while ago (ummm, 3 or 4 years) I visited a customer in the city, afterwards I walked back to where I had parked. I had to walk up a steep hill for the length of 1 city block and when I got to the top I thought I would die. I hadn't turned 40 yet and I couldn't walk up a hill without being totally out of breath and feeling like shit! I felt that if things continued like that then I could look forward to some serious health problem (type 2 diabetes or whatever) so I needed to fix me.

I started walking daily for 30 minutes, then within a couple of weeks I decided to stretch it to a full hour. I walked almost every day for a full hour covering about 6kms (~4 miles) and after a few months I had moved my belt in by 2 notches. My daily walk incorporates 2 steep uphills and I work up a good sweat, but I don't feel like I am going to die when I get to the top of the hill. I can climb stairs and hills without a problem - I think that is as it should be!

I could still lose some weight, but overall my health is OK. I don't walk every day now, but I still cover 6km in 1 hour about 4 or 5 times a week. I didn't do it for anyone else - this effort I put in is purely for me.

I have also made changes in my diet now and then:
I cut out fizzy drinks quit a few years ago and now nine tenths of what I drink is chilled water.
I cut out white bread a few years ago, wholegrain/multigrain bread has just as many calories but has more fibre and nutrients.
I stopped using my deep fryer about 3 years ago and I don't miss it at all.

Sweet, it sounds like you lost it the right way. With the proper knowledge, effort, and lifestyle change. I'm a huge fan of Bill Phillips "Body for Life" and "Eating for Life" program and books.
