Contest Kickoff

For those interested in healthy eating, check out the Paleo Diet. It's based on what we would have eaten back in the OLDEN olden days, which makes a lot of sense to me. It's what we EVOLVED to eat, not what we LEARNED to eat. :)

I have lived for over 42 years without once trying a fad diet or any weight loss 'gimmicks'. The only things I have tried are exercise and making changes to what I eat. I was 25 before I got overweight - I was having icecream for dessert. I didn't like the weight I was gaining so I cut out the icecream. Now I don't eat icecream, biscuits, chips or lollies on a regular basis - those are occasional treat foods only.

Personally I think that any change in your diet should be something that you can keep up permanently. If you can't give up chocolate than cut down to a certain amount per week and stick to that, later if you can cope with less then cut down to a lesser amount per week - one day you may find that you can keep chocolate as a rare treat which you have no more often than once per month. Just make a small change that you can live with now, later you can make another small change. Don't cut out everything that you shouldn't eat all at once unless you can stick to that without a problem.

right on Katie.. keep it up...:) what a great motivator... i know i could use it..:o

I dont think I have ever siad or will I again but...
DAMNIT I WISH I WASNT IN SHAPE

does it count if I put on 20lbs then loose it?:D

I too have started trying to get into better "shape" I'm 6'3'' and 165lbs and 28 years old. I got a wakeup call when I started noticing myself getting out of breath every time I had to do something more involved than just walking. I kept meaning to start to do something about it, but never did. Then my 38 year old uncle had a heart attack (it was mild and he is ok now). My family has a history of heart problems, but nobody ever had an issue that young. It was almost instant. No more fat or cholestorol, and I've been going to the gym as often as my crazy (70 hour week) work schedule allows. That was about 2 months ago, and I still dont eat "bad" foods, and I'm still going to the gym. I havn't gained or lost an weight, but my pants fit looser, and I can actually see muscles now. I am starting to feel better, and my cravings for fatty foods are not happening so often anymore.

Good job to all the people making changes and sticking with them. It isn't always easy.

I'm 21 years old, just shy of 6 ft, and about 195. In the past year I've dropped almost 40 pounds. I look back on those pictures and wonder what the hell I let myself get into. To drop weight I did a ton of research on foods, when and what to eat, and drastically changed my diet. I was eating Taco Bell 6-7 times a week, on top of other fast food. I also drank a lot of soda. I cut out fast food entirely (except for when it's a trip to another city with friends and that's all we have when down there), soda is gone, except for about once a month, and my food is a lot fresher.

As for working out, I actually just got back from the gym! Monday, Wednesday and Friday(minimum) are my martial arts days. I practice Kajukenbo and Muay Thai. Both are full contact styles and require me to be very active in class. Muay Thai is great for lean muscle with the repetitive strikes and the fast movements that raise heart rate. Kajukenbo is another style that when we throw in some grappling or sparring it can get my heart rate going. On Tuesday and Thursday I TRY to either go to Muay Thai or to the gym and lift. If it's the gym I'll do a minimum of 15 minutes running or on an eliptical, and then five or so exercises in an area, either upper body or lower body. The end of all my workouts include stretches and ab work.

With the start of training hard core last August, I've seen about a 10-15 lb drop (depending on the day). Recently, I've plateaued on my weight loss, but I'm starting to see a lot more definition, especially on my arms and chest. I want to drop down to 185 normal weight, and begin doing Muay Thai fighting at about 170 lbs.

My goals: Hit 185 by May 1st, and maintain all year. Increase range of motion with flexibility. Improve definition overall, and raise endurance. Have a fight by the end of the year.

Two years ago, my heaviest, and my start of mental changing. From December 2007. Over the next year, I dropped 15 lbs or so. I weighed 250 ish if I remember right.

From July 2009. You can see my Endura 4 Waved in my back pocket, and I think that's my BM 710 in my front pocket.

This one is taken as of a few minutes ago before showering. Self timer, learning how to use it, kinda out of focus, but it gives you an idea.

My idea is to post in this thread two or three times a week, or maybe even every day if I'm feeling up to it! I want to chronicle what I eat, how I feel, stresses, thoughts, achievements, weight, goals, and what I did throughout the day. So, lets start with today.

Weight: 198.2 pounds.

Ate: Really bad.
-Breakfast: two eggs, over easy. Hashbrowns, a lot. Chicken fried steak. Biscuit and gravy. Two glasses water
-During the day: About 1 liter of water with two Emer-gen-C's in them because I'm trying to fend off a cold. No snacks, I was running around with a good friend all day.
-Dinner: Two eggs, scrambled, two slices pepper jack cheese, two slices bacon. All between two slices of dense whole grain bread with some ranch on it. Drank a Mikes Hard Cranberry.
-Water throughout the day: Pretty good, about 2 liters. Need to increase to three liters.

What I did Today: Gym, upper body.
-Ran for five minutes. Then elliptical for ten, with the final three minutes -pushing hard for 20 seconds, and going light for ten.
-Three sets of twenty alternating curls (10 each arm) at 35 pounds.
-Shoulder press, three sets of 10 at 70 pounds.
-Tricep press, three sets of 10 at 50 pounds
-Rowing machine, 2 minute, 500 meters.
-Two pull ups.
-Ten push ups.
-Ab work, 25 crunches, 25 scissors, 25 sideways scissors, 25 crunches, 20 sit ups with alternating punches (left right, right left, left right, right left...) each up. All with no breaks.
-Stretch for 15 min.

How I'm feeling.
Tired, slightly stressed with classes and being unemployed and receiving one call back with over 35 applications turned in. I'm annoyed with myself at how poorly I've eaten over the past weekend. I ate poorly because things sounded really good, and I went to a friends birthday party. Today was a special trip to a local (world renowned) truck stop, Johnson's Corner for breakfast. This week, I want to be back to 195 by Friday.

I'm hoping that by having a group that I'm accountable to, even if I don't personally know almost all of you, I'll stay on track and get my butt into gear and reach my goals this year.

Thank you for reading this,
Greg

Wow Mrs. S and Crowdog, that is a very amazing story! My next birthday will be the big 5-0, if I live that long! My problem is I am a chocoholic, I love food, and when I eat meat I load the salt on. But I am only 5' 8" but over 250lbs. I am in terrible shape, very weak. I sometimes get on a kick about walking and using the treadmill, but then I get distracted with a busy schedule at work or something. It is very motivating to hear your story. I have to consider whether I can be really committed to it before I join the contest, but I really need to. My dad was diagnosed with diabetes last year, and I am headed that way if I don't make some changes!

quit it all cold turkey! seriously. when i started i quit EVERYTHING! i would drink a protein shake for breakfast. 2 hrs later i would have a small snack that was protein. 2 hrs later it was a plain chicken breast for lunch. no sauce NOTHING. and a bit of rice. I kept up the every 2 hrs and the plain. it was TORTURE for a while. once i got a grasp on how my body felt when i was eating well i SLOWLY started allowing myself to put sauce on the chicken breast and i didn't introduce treats until christmas time.

Chocolate was hard, but only once a month. lol There were days that I felt like I could club a newborn for a piece of chocolate. I made it through and I don't get that intense urge anymore. When you get it grab a bottle of water first. Think about and you can overcome the craving.

I have to say the KEY for me is eating every 2 hours. It seems like I eat a lot of food but I really don't. You'll feel better if you feed your body BEFORE it's screaming for food. You'll eat less and you'll make better choices.

I've got about 40 lbs of "pregnancy" weight to lose... Since I've been married I've gained 40 pounds and I constantly remind my wife it was the sympathy weight from when she was pregnant. She lost hers, I still have mine.

We're actually trying to scrape a bit in the budget so my wife can get a gym membership. It's like 1/3 of the price if you pay for 2 years at a time ($300 for 2 years at 24 Hour Fitness) but its a big chunk of change to come up with. I'm in grad school so I'm gone or studying all day while my wife is home with the kids. I'm hoping this helps her get out and have some alone time while keeping in shape and meeting her own personal goals. I wish I could do more to help her out but right now there's just not enough hours in the day to do everything we would like to do. I need to lose some weight and get in better shape but I feel that it is better to watch the kids and let my wife have a break for a bit than take the break myself. She's an amazing woman and I want to keep her as happy as possible - she deserves it.

Congrats on losing weight and getting in better shape, putting it out in the open and making yourself more accountable for it really helps with the days that you might be lacking motivation!

I have about 120 lbs to loose. Literally. I weigh 110 more than when my wife met me.

I have been married for almost 10 years, so that makes about 11 pound gain per year for the last 10 years.

Working 12 hour graveyard shifts full time, and going to school full time for 4 years (had to pull a lot of 48hour with no sleep days), did not help there. Stopped going to the gym, but did not cut down on how much I was eating. Then lawschool and a kid on top of a bunch of other extra stuff did not help any.

I really need to get back in the gym. Last time I started a dedicated exercise program, I was 19, and I lost 75 lbs or so in 7 months. No diet at all. Ate what I wanted, just got tons of exercise, lots of gym time, and lot of walking everywhere (different country) I kept that weight off just by exercising unit the above things happened. Kept skinny and buff for about 5 years. Then Bingo.

WOW Mrs. S! you look great, Congratulation! (and congratulations to Mr.S too)

I AM IN! I am 5'6", 223-ish lb.

My goal is better over all health. -7min. mile, 15+ dead hang pull ups, 50+ crunches in 2min. 50-60+ push ups. Down to -190lbs. by at least June, 1st.

I am starting tonight.

Congratulations KT!! You look fantastic:thumbup::thumbup:

Crowdog, your a good man for be such an inspiration. I expect nothing less from a Michigander;)

Shotty... time to lock & load brother:p

What did I gain?
- Knowledge about when, how and what to feed my body to keep me in optimal condition. After this many months I can tell when I'm not feeding my body the proper nutrition. I just don't feel good when I don't. I get tired, bloated and miserable. You really start noticing "little" things.
-I went from loathing the gym to looking forward to going. I even get grumpy if I don't go for a period of time.
-Above everything I gained a friendship. We spent countless hours talking, planning and executing my plan. It is almost impossible to not develop a bond with someone when you're sharing the information needed for me to accomplish my goal.
This is all so true. Especially the nutrition part. Four years ago I started a serious workout and nutrition routine after recovering from back surgery. In all I lost 50lbs and gained so much in return. It is an amazing feeling.

Don't give up and keep at it. It takes work to stick with it as it is so easy to fall off the wagon.

CONGRATS Mrs S!!!

I SO NEED to look at this thread later. I could probably stand to lose another 70 lbs to be honest. Ouch, that hurt to admit. I've lost about 20 lbs just cutting out some of the crap I was eating.

Almost 40 yrs of eating crap is a hard habit to change. Trying to find money or time for the gym would be hard too with working 60-70 hr weeks including travel time. Spending time with family, doing Cub Scouts, etc.

I know, excuses. But, a reality. I'll be back later to read and study more.

Changing eating habit can be a really difficult thing; unless your goals dictate different don’t make your food choices so strenuous. The truth about weight is it must be sustainable within regard to your life style; a miserable lifestyle of eating baby leaf spinach, sweet potatoes, chicken, tuna and turkey everyday tell you die without the godly blessing of Taco Bell….come on? No way, unless of course the goal I’ve set is more important than the indulgence of Taco Bell. So it’s about find a way to use the calories you bring in, and only bring in the amount of calories you are going to use.
It sounds to me like your life is the gym, your moving a bunch and remaining physically active, working out is mental recreation; decreasing weight is 80% diet and 20% working out. So don’t compromise your family time, or your social obligations, such as cub scouts; your time there can be just as positively demanding as a 30min at the gym.

right on Mrs S!!!
Our dad left us at 47 when I was 24 and woke up to eating healthy. He looked in fairly good shape but had a horrible german farmer diet. I can remember him eating everyone's porkchop and steak fat off their plates with a gleam in his eye.

I am a 39 yr old with a 19 yr metabolism. My weight does not change much but the quality of energy and basically feeling good stems from a good diet. I lose muscle quickly if I don't eat a fair bit and work out and it is hard work and slow to put it back.

Got married on Nov 7 and the stress and lack of time/ planning had my wife put on 20lbs and had me lose 8lbs of lean muscle and downgrade to a 4 pack.

Since our honeymoon she cut all fried foods, take out, snacks and has been working out 1hr a day 5 days a week. She has only lost 6lb but looks like 15 with the composition
change. Nice to see her with some muscle on her shoulders and neck.

Myself I have gotten back into doing my old dojo warmup and stretching every morning with some perfect pushup sets and basic's with 20lb and 35lb dumbbells. Have almost got my knackered rotator cuff ready to go for some real work in the gym that I pay strata fees for. With the weather getting better I need to break out the lazy old lab Spot and hit the trails.

Want to put on 10 lb of muscle by the end of summer and drop 5% bodyfat.
The wife wants to get to 118lb(8 more to go) at 5"4 with more tone.

good luck and stay focused everyone.

 I just caught the mr eating an eclair. He said "i didn't say i was starting today." I'm not the only one holding him accountable for his choice now. :p
