So both of those esteemed members offered to meet with us, do a little guided touring of both Paris, and, their respective knife collections!!
The prospect of a transatlantic vacation doesn't get any better!!!

First, Jolipapa! He came to my Hotel to pick me up, and we rode the bus to go to various cutlery stores to see what is on offer in Paris. He also gave me a small bundle, which I will address shortly!
My wife Joanne, a serious artist, went off to a couple of the incredible Art museums not far from where we were staying!
Forged Laguiole won out in the lottery to bring home a production/semi-production knife from the streets of Paris. As you can imagine, prices were very high in such a tourist-attracting city.
One knife was my limit!!

Red, white and blue are the colors of the French Flag - hence the beads, which also hold the knife still for the scan.

But that knife is a small part of our visit! I will always have several remembrances of our meeting, the greatest of which was a visit to his home, which was several floors up in a two-person cage elevator, through the middle of a glorious winding staircase! I felt like I had stepped into a post-war French movie!!
JP presented me with a bundle of knives, and an artifact from his talented Grandfather.
The artifact; Grandpere was a bookbinder, and shaped this relief in leather as part of a cover. Very like art Deco of a few generations ago!!GrandPere Alain.jpg

So great to hear from you Charlie! Since you left it's been storm, thunder and flashes every end of the afternoon, including now. Good for the garden roses, less for people! I should have shown you an ivory bead, same shape as the red in the picture.
You felt right, the house dates 1939.

An unforgettable lunch in JP's favorite bistro was another highlight of my visit. This small restaurant has a long history of feeding local workers and families, and even occupying forces many years ago. It is like the beating heart of the neighborhood, and I enjoyed a delicious French version of my usually forbidden, but favorite, Liver and Onions! (I was on holidays after all!)
We ate wielding GEC knives!! (knife content)!:)

Sounds like a great trip! I'd love to visit France someday and tour the whole country. Paris for sure! Also, I'd have to stop in Thiers. Glad you got to go AND meet a BF pal.

The weather was beautiful while we were there! I hope it storms for only part of the day, JP!!
I posted the tri-color beads in honor of France's tri-color Flag!!:)
Please show us your ivory bead when you can!
And again thanks so much for a most enjoyable visit, and the very generous gifts!!

You must go, Joshua!!
(I owe you a message - soon!!)

We also got to visit with Achillepattada (A'), and his lovely wife and children!!
We did some looking around Paris and Versaille, and rode a sightseeing boat up and down the Seine. We also had a nice meal at a place where Parisians take their families for a pleasant dinner!
And we had some Italian style Gelato, which was better than any we had eaten in the Italian part of Vancouver!!
On our last day, A' took us to a nice lunch, and presented me with a jaw-dropping, authentic yet modern Sardinian Pattada!
Joanne and I are so grateful to our Parisian friends! They made a nice vacation fantastic!!

There is so much more to tell! I will come back after a time!
A' and JP, I hope you have a word or two to post. I will never forget our visit to your beautiful part of the world!!

Hi Charlie,
It has been a great pleasure for my family and me to meet Joanne and you in Paris .
And also a pleasure to see that you and me (but I'm also sure that it's the same with jolipapa) with the traditional american slip joint or the Pattadesa try to understand how was our ancestors' life.
You are arrived as a famous ambassador of the american traditional knife and you are gone as a friend :)

You are welcome anyday! Too late today to make pictures, I'll post tomorrow. It rains in the evening and night, but temperatures are high, 28°C (83F), with a cloudy weather.
This is a picture I already posted, the 66 HJ6 you offered me, at work you know where :D. I love her (she matches the table set!)!

After Napoleon's defeat in 1815, Paris was divided in areas like Berlin after WWII, occupied by Prussians, Austrians and Russians. The district where I live is North, called the Moskova because it was the Russian area with baracks.
As they loved the small cafes and were always in hurry, they used to yell "bistro" (quick) to get the beverages. The name remained since. moustache.gif

The worked bolster is awesome and suits the knife perfectly!
A boat trip on the Seine is a great idea to discover Paris.
Thanks to you I discovered that@Âchillepattada and I do also share another forum (that I admit to frequent less because less "traditonal" focused) :) - btw, third knife from top is last year's forum knife, made by a young cutler fresh from the Thiers Cutlery Public School.

Jaw dropping is right  . I would love to visit such friends in such a beautiful place :)

"You are arrived as a famous ambassador of the american traditional knife and you are gone as a friend." Lovely!

All the best,
Ray

What wonderful reading, and what a great meeting to have taken place between the Knife Knuts Waynorth, Achille and Jolipapa :)

MORE! MORE !!!!
Apologies for rushing when sneaking a look during work time - I didn’t get to take it all in.
Achille my friend I just picked up on your last sentence to Charlie which read very nicely....
“ you arrived as a famous ambassador of the American Traditional Knife ... and you are gone as a friend”

That was worded so nicely :)

When I was contemplating our trip to Paris, I decided I wanted to bring an EDC that would handle any job. It had been a long time since I had carried a Serpentine Jack, so I thought I'd give one a go. Enter the last Diamond Jack that was made.
GEC has made two versions for me. This one has a simpler Clip blade style, with a slightly thinner grind than the first one, which had a saber grind.
This knife proved a good choice! You all know what a problem crusty bread can present, even to a sharp knife. This one has proved up to this task, slicing our Baguettes nicely! Achille used it to cut up his Duck, while I used one of his Sardinian treasures to cut mine!!
Duck, apples, Liver and Onions and ripe Brie create a pretty cool Parisian Patina!!
