Convex Edge

DO you like the NMSFNO better than the NMSH. If so is it because the blade is'nt convexed?

I don't have any of the longer Fusion Steel Hearts, but they are impressive. I have the 2007 ASH1 SE and the Skinny ASH1. While they can chop, they are just too short (6") to compete with my longer blade Busses in chopping. I convexed my Skinny one, and it's a great slicer and dicer.

Just curious I've got a steel heart se comming next week. Did'nt know if it is convexed or not.

It's a 2008 model, the guy said it was 270. thick. I'd like to have it convexed. It's satin finished.

At .270" thick, be thankful it isn't a convex grind. It would be even heavier. Just sharpen the final edge yourself using a strop and compound, and you will have a nice convex edge. I bet it's a good chopper.

The 2008 is a much better knife in my opinion. I find the 2007 very beautiful but too heavy.

If you don't have a belt grinder and you want to convex it you can use sandpaper and a neoprene sheet or a base like this:

Horn Dog, what would be the ideal thickness of neoprene for convexing with sandpaper. Thanks

I have never used the neoprene. You don't need much "give" to cause the edge to curve. I use a KSF Bark River paddle that has leather on it. I use compound with it. But the sandpaper method should remove steel faster. I have a Kalamazoo belt sander for that. Ask BlackDiamond.

As HornDog says leather works fine. Sandpaper should lay on a surface not hard but not soft either. A thin sheet of neoprene would work too (let's say 0.15")
Handamerican.com should have all what you need.

Thanks Horn Dog, and Black Diamond for all your help, pictures and Imformation. Just having a hard time waiting for it to get here. Thinking about a NMSFNO now, or a Fbm not sure which one to get next. Now I know the NMSFNO comes convexed so maybe that'll be next.

It depends on what you look for, I wouldn't consider only the knd of grind but also the thickness of the blade.

I think the NMSFNO is a better slicer the FBM is the best chopper.

As much as I like my NMSFNO, I think that your new FSH SE would be a very nice chopper, too. No need to get another 8" chopper. Personally, I'd prefer the new BWM to the FBM, even if the FBM is prettier. And you can get a brand new BWM now for a good price. Convex grinds are fine, but a convexed final edge on a flat grind works just as well, so don't sell that FSH short.

Agreed. I prefer the FSH to the NMSFNO. The first gen FSH had a horrible thick edge, but Ban took care of that. The Heavy Heart and the newer 0.27" flat grind versions are very nice knives.

Thanks Hogs for everything, I'm kinda just getting started so maybe when I grow up I can become a Hog also. hahaha!

I did this almost two years ago and people asked me to video it and show how I did it. I apologize to everyone for not doing it before I had to leave for traveling a lot. I have not forgot about all of you. My video camera is broke by focusing it TTL(through the lens) but if I can get it to focus good I will post it when I finish the edge on my Zilla. I might have to get my camera fixed as well. I have a nice tripod now which will help too. I have tried many ways in convexing an edge and while this one is a little more work and time consuming it is well worth it. Convex is the way to go!

Horn Dog, yea I would imagine the BWM would be a pretty good chopper/hacker.Right now it would also be cheaper than a NMSFNO. Is it convexed too?

Barbarossa, checked out your link man that convex edge on your ak looks scary sharp.
What do you do with that in Alaska? Hunt something!
