Cool Knives in movie Avatar

alright getting of the philosiphacal discussion, im prety sure i saw the colenal with a cold steel recon scout

Just point out that even the most land-loving cultures use wood and natural materials, I've yet to hear of a lifestyle that actually forgoes natural materials. Today's logging industry is actually doing quite a job with the replanting and careful trimming. Between agricultural advances that let some old farm fields go wild again and more thoughtful harvest methods, saving trees is a low priority nowadays. I recycle, yes, but knowing that the loggers will be required to plant new trees afterwards doesn't have me scrambling for litter. Even the film mentions that hunters are allowed to make their bows from their sacred home tree, the logging metaphor doesn't go that far to people who know the modern methods. Ideally, a space traveling culture could figure out a way to mine without stripping landscape...But they need a plot. I see it as more of a culture clash film than an eco-flick, nature is used as an easily portrayed symbol for a way of life. Machines versus nature is just easiest to pull off, you can't make a blockbuster out of dueling philosophies. 'Avatar' is just a better flick because healthcare reform doesn't involve alien versus robot knife fights.

P.S. Yeah, it does look like a Recon Scout. The others have older-style Camillus looking handles, his did look a bit more realistic except for the leather sheath.

I forget about that last fight. Come to think of it, I think it's really cool that on another planet, space faring humans are battling it out in a Robot suit and Alien Avatar. Using Knives!!!!!!!:D The knife the colonel used was wicked looking. Like something from SOG or Busse Combat only much bigger. And he used it effectively to kill one of these giant creatures. It was surprising though. I mean I would expect a soldier on the ground to carry a Knife. But a Mech Warrior thingy? Too cool:cool: It makes sense for them to carry it if only for backup if their weapon malfunctioned or ran out of ammo. As was the case for the colonel.

I think you're forgetting that their built in "internet" was with ALL living things, not just eachother.
So? They couldn't tell who was saying what? Blue dogies were hacking data? As far as I saw in the movie they used it for communication just fine. No complaints of interference. Look at the internet, there is so much posted on it, not always smart, not always good, sometimes outright garbage, still it serves the purpose.

Technology comes about with a lot of raping of nature.
Or inventing what the nature doesn't provide readily. E.g. the wheel.

So if they're that in tune with nature and healing, they really have no reason to build highways (they fly on those bird things), build skyscrapers (huge natural trees they live in), telephones/internet (duh), etc....
And if it was as you describe then humanity would never invent cars or even chariots, they rode on horses. And I don't think there was lack of trees and caves on earth, yet skyscrapers became necessary. Unless you impose population very severe population control (like China today) there will be not enough trees for everyone to live in. Let alone the simple fact that there are no trees readily available everywhere you want/might want to live.
