could it be possible Microtech changed the looks of the ZT 0777 clone?

This is called the Whale Shark. I wonder if the "other" knife got changed and renamed to Whale Shark.

If they did change it, I don't feel so bad anymore since that knife is uglier than the ZT 0777 (IMO).

Perhaps Thomas can chime in.

I'll put in my $0.02 cause I think this thread will get shut down soon,

I think that is fugly! I never really thought about buying a MT, but now they are definitely on do not buy list!

This is so close to the other knife that it should be obvious they changed it just enough to keep selling it. Bad warranty and customer service is one thing, but this is down right sickening. I don't hate many companies, but they are getting close.

What difference does it make if they changed it? They did copy it in the first place, didn't they?

This looks to me like a completely different knife to me. Yeah, the carbon fibre is similar to the 0777 but everything else is different. I believe this is a sub-3-inch blade and personally this is more akin to the Volcan Coronado than to the 0777. Actually too much like the Volcan.

And why would Thomas have to say anything about a Microtech product? This thread is strange.

I think he is just poking at Thomas to make his guys turn out the next big thing already, 0777!

We all know good work takes time, so the MT knife is bad work apparently.

Waiting is always hard to do.

Micortech has had a whale shark for a long time. it is not there design. Johnny Liao Designed the original. that is the whale shark II done in carbon fiber.

That's a totally different knife. The Matrix is the copy of the 777, and they are still making it exactly the same. The whale shark you pictured is just one of their customs.

and the jury is actually still out on just how much permission the guys at M/T got before making the whaleshark as well. I think the only surprising thing about these recent M/T debacles is the fact that some find it surprising to begin with. For many of us who have been into knives for awhile this is same stuff different day. At the end of the day though you can bet your bottom dollar that Mr T. Marfione will do what best suits his check book at that moment. And long term effects of his decisions are rarely if ever taken into consideration before acting.

Thats not someone I want to buy anything from.

Whale Shark to me means a very big shyster, am I wrong?

Let's keep the Kershaw/Zero Tolerance forum for discussion of Kershaw and ZT.
Comparisons between companies belong in General Knife Discussion, where I am moving this.

First time ive seen this, the original whale prototype by microtech is a pretty decent looking knife, but they are doing alot of things wrong with changing the design so much from it.

No, that was not my intention at all.

I was hoping that maybe Thomas et al. reached some kind of agreement with Microtech, either behind close doors or in court, so that Microtech wouldn't make the Matrix (the unlicensed 0777 copy). Yes, ZT was first with the 0777 design. Frankly, whatever happened, I hope ZT got some money out of it, because the Matrix was almost a mirror image of the 0777.

EDIT: I just read some of the replies here. I did not know the Whale Shark was an update of an existing design. I guess that means, a mod can close this thread if he so chooses, unless other people want to comment.

I don't care one way or another myself. It's good in General Knife. But actually you can close it youself.

Ya this knife is absurd.

Okay the overall shape does look like the first whale shark, but it seems obvious that they took the matrix and just changed the shape to match a shape they already had and hope that will pass muster. I think with the carbon fiber handle and the frame lock, flipper and blade channels are all still copied from the 0777.

Now its just a copy that looks like something they have already sold.

Don't copy, at least take someone's idea and tweak it or do it differently to make it your own, thats patent law 101.

Based on previous threads about it, I think it is a sore spot for Thomas and he doesn't talk about it. Or there is not a final ruling yet. I think last thing he said about the copy was "lets move on."

I hope that KAI did sue them or get an injunction or a judgment or whatever, at least an arbitrated agreement not to produce the matrix, but this redone big shyster (whale shark) is still a slap in the face on the other cheek of KAI.

I think we would all like to know what ultimately happened regarding the blatant copy, but we might never.

I can't tell if the people in this thread think the Whale Shark is a copy of the 777 or not........It definitely isn't, the Microtech Matrix on the other hand definitely is.

^^^This.

But I do see where Hark is coming from, since the design of the Whale Shark certainly appears to be descended from that of the 0777 (especially the shape and milled groove of the blade). Apparently ripping off the 0777 once with the Matrix wasn't enough, so they decided to use it as the basis for additional "designs" as well. :thumbdn:
