[Counterfeit] Fallkniven F1, rusted (pics) quickly

Hi Folks,

I purchased the F1 based on the many positive reviews. It's a great knife and I was able to take it with me to Costa Rica for 6 days brand new. We were down in the Osa Peninsula near Panama and the humidity is very very high. The Jungle surrounded much of the area. The knife was taken on a hike into Corcovado National Park and then up the Carate River for many miles. I used it only a few times and it remained mostly sheathed. We ran out of sunblock and I cut down palm leaves to make my girlfriend shoulder shades. Fairly easy task. I cut duct tape. I also batoned a piece of drift wood on the beach that was fairly dry. Stain-less literally means "stain less" which allows for the possibility of stain. Even so, after 6 days I was surprised to see that the finish of the knife rusted in the following condition. Your experiences?

Thanks

*UPDATE: This appears to be a fake / counterfeit Fallkniven F1. As over 30 days have gone since the purchase, I have little recourse here through Ebay or Paypal. Appreciate everyone's help on this.

Steel will rust when not wiped/cleaned after use, and if you left it all messy for 6 days it's no wonder why it rusted. Try some tuff glide and wipe your blades off after use.

Ps,
Your pics aren't showing up

Had a ZDP-189 Delica rust after two days of hiking due to sweat soaking through my pants. In a hot & humid environment like Costa Rica along with being so close to the ocean, there is probably a higher salinity to the water vapor. It does not surprise me in the least.

The photos are not showing for me, but I am atleast a little suspicious the F1 you have is a forgery. I researched them for quite some time a while ago when I was considering purchasing one. Rust is not an issue I read about in one single review, the amount of fakes out there is.

And a real Fallkniven F1 has a convexed edge, not a vee grind.

New genuine F1's doesn't look like the one in Your pic's!
It's hard to read the bottom line in the logo.
Can You tell us what it says?

OP, upload your photos to imgur.com and then use the "Insert Image" option in the comment box to post them.

Rust can potentially happen to stainless steels, too. VG-10 is very corrosion resistant - my kitchen knives are VG-10 and I rarely do more to dry them after handwashing than a quick wipe down - but it's still a possibility.

Could have been applied by hand. I've slapped a v grind on an F1 before, it doesn't take a ton of work with a DMT C hone or something like it. Likewise I've convexed a v edge, also of a similar steel (VG-1). Not terribly difficult to grind.

No idea if that's the case for OP, but... we'll see once they respond.

True, though he said it was brand new. Of course one could have changed the grind first thing.

True. It's just that the logo is pretty worn already, which made me think they might have just meant that it was new to them in general.

Either way, we'll see. Hopefully OP gets back to us soon, I'm curious.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I certainly purchased it new a while back and this was the first time I used it. I had not touched the blade from factory because it was very sharp. For the "Fallkniven" logo, perhaps that rubbed off with insect repellant or simple batoning? I purchased the knife on Ebay from here in Utah, USA. One can never be sure. Do you think it's fake?

They dont come from the factory with that kind of edge. Sorry, man.

Sorry, it's a fake!

Even if it is real, VG-10 exposed to salt water, humidity and bug spray and sheathed for 6 days.... It will rust.

It's hard to say without a straight on shot of the spine, but I'm not seeing any lines on the edge from the lamination either. An F1 should be laminated.

This may be a good explanation. Were were right along the ocean and certainly salt humid air was around us. A guide and lodge owner both complained about rust being an issue there. I just thought the knife's finish would have held up better given such a short stay. I was also surprised because I took my KaBar USMC Fighting Knife to the same exact area last year. It was way too heavy/large for recreational use, however had very little rust other then a couple spots on the blade edge after a week.

The Ka-Bar was coated though, that's why you saw it on the edge.
