Coyotes kill Cape Breton hiker

This is a very sad story. My heart goes out to the family.

In my opinion animals in National Parks act differently than true "wild animals".

Now that people and their 'developments' have spread all over I guess the coyotes are well fed all the time with pets and petfoods. They're smart, crafty animals and have been around for eons. An old trapper I used to know had a saying---"When the last human on this earth is drawing his last breath, there'll be a coyote and a cockroach waiting to eat him." BTW, armadillos have spread right along with the coyotes, they're all over now too.

urban vermin proud to bite
when he feel he may be right
never mind he may be wrong
always sing this clever song

rats and mice they will survive
when no one else is left alive

whats the secret you may wonder
not the lightning not the thunder

speaking of their humble choice
whisper in a still small voice

ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch
shshshshshshshshshsh

you are amazingly perceptive dougo.

And one who shoots an animal just for the sake of shooting it is amazingly ignorant and, most likely, uneducated... Gotta love people who go out of their way to make the intelligent gun users and hunters of society look like idiots

All right, knock off the insults. He is NOT ignorant, he is NOT uneducated, he has a different opinion, he has a different outlook on life than you. If you disagree, say so, but don't be disagreeable.

He? Anyone you were addressing with that intemperate tone.
(And remember the First Law of Holes.)

Sorry...I did not intend to direct it at anyone in particular. More at the practice of shooting an animal 'just because.' That is, at the very least, just plain irresponsible but as I said, it probably stems from a bit of ignorance, either about the animals themselves or wildlife in general. This same type of attitude has led to the extinction of thousands of species around the globe...Eh...I guess it doesn't matter though, some people, for whatever reason, are content to just destroy without purpose or forethought...

The reason most coyotes avoid human contact is because they have this survival gene. Any coyote that is without fear of humans and allows itself to be shot probably needed to be shot. 'Yotes eating feral dogs and cats is fine; going after a pet on leash demonstrates a lack of respect for the other end of the leash. Some animals need to be shot.

I am not too concerned about coyotes becoming extinct. If hunters want to go after them, it's fine with me. If every varmint hunter in North America killed one today, it wouldn't even put a dent in the population. I am concerned that a young hiker was attacked and killed. Wild animals can be dangerous. They aren't like cartoon animals. I think it is only sensible to carry some kind of self defense weapon when hiking, even in areas that don't have mountain lions, bears, or coyotes. Those two legged predators are the most dangerous of all. We are still safer walking in the woods than on our city streets. Coyotes attacking people is fairly rare.

Here in CT we have Coyotes all over the place. I work third shift and If I go out in the parking lot of my shop in the middle of the night about 5 out of 10 times I will see a coyote in the empty lot across the street.

I know of two people who have been harrased by coyotes recently. One of them was my brother a week and a half ago. He was coming out of the woods from bow hunting and saw two coyotes approaching him about 40 yards away. He lit them up with his flashlight thinking that it would scare them off. He was wrong, they ended up coming in closer yelling and yipping and he threw a bunch of sticks at them. He had about a 1/2 mile walk out and by the time he made it to the truck he said he had "a ton" of them circling around him in the dark following him.

I suggested next time he send an arrow there way to hopefully scare the others off.

in the 70s a coyote grabbed a 2 yr. girl in calif.suburban neighborhood
locals had been feeding them
child was retrieved but dead
stout stick beats a knife; better still a sword cane
personally i always have anything from a beretta 22 short to a colt detective 38
easily concealed & effective on human predators also , hell with the law survival comes 1st.

I agree. Better safe than sorry.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes they do need killin. I am not exactly certain where the line should be drawn though. Despite the fact that this young girl's death was tragic, should we really hunt down and kill animals that were acting on their natural predatory instinct while in what has become their natural habitat.

I am also concerned at the broad ecological damage caused by eradicating a species. The Aussies learned that there are far worse things than Dingos when they sectioned off the land to try and control them and actually lost (or endangered, I can't recall ATM) a few species of smaller creatures.
