Coyotes kill Cape Breton hiker

slightly off topic,

what gets me (esp here in the lower mainland of BC) is that people here view animals as "cute" "cuddly" "friendly" "disneyfied" and something to try to feed. They do not see them as wild animals that operate on wilderness rules, instead they think they will act as disney animals......

then they B***** in the newspapers and TV when their Disney animal has to be put down. Christ we had a women here on the North shore that was FEEDING a black bear on her back porch. That bear later broke into homes all around the area and caused havoc. The women cried and wailed when the bear was shot after entering a home with a two year old kid playing in the kitchen.

I couldnt agree more. Feeding wild animals is a recipe for disaster (no pun intended).

We have a similar problem here with baboons and vervet monkeys. They are now extremely aggressive and will invade cars and houses if given half a chance. They jump into cars, grab bags and empty them out in search of anything edible.

All because they now associate humans with easy access to food.

There's no limit to human stupidity.

Getting killed by coyotes ranks right up there with being trapped by your seatbelt underwater. Could happen, but not likely enough to plan for it.

Good stout walking stick for the former, pocket knife for the latter, both are always with me anyhow. Chris

To be fair, aside from being alone (which, let's be honest, many of us do) not having some kind of means of defence, and perhaps not having optimum situational awareness, it is not clear to me that this poor woman did anything wrong or irresponsible. I'm sure she fought like hell. Rough way to go out.

All the best,

- Mike

I'm hoping this topic stays "up top" for a bit. I've been around coyotes all my life and other than the 2 mentions never heard of them attacking a full grown human. I'd be most intrested in what the coroners/inquest say was cause of death. If the young lady fell/hit her head, was unconcicious or bleeding I could buy a yote biting her..but them stalking pulling her down? Thats not their style. Rabid? Not likley..Rabid animals dont work together..Rabies cause a form of insanity and while a rabid animal might attack it/them would not be standing there attempting to eat its prey Somebody in the area watch the newspapers or media and see what we can find out about this case. My sympathies to her family. Let us hope that it does'nt turn into a animal killing frenzy like occured when Steve Irwin was tragically lost.

Has it been confirmed that the coyotes actually killed the woman? As with others on here I have found them to be shy but they do try to call my hounds out late at night but they don't fall for it. Lots of black bears in my area and they are shy also but you do get the crazed one every now and then.

Police were called by witnesses who saw the coyotes mauling the woman. Official statements have noted that her injuries were consistent with an attack. So, yeah, I think it has been confirmed. One animal was at the scene when the RCMP arrived, and it was shot and injured. Definitely unusual.

Best,

Good point, been around coyotes a lot, never seen anything remotely like this. Wonder if she may have taken a bad fall or was incapacitated some other way.

Hiker in the smokey mountains a few years ago fell and was seriously injured and a black bear had been feeding on him, wonder if this wasn't similar. Chris/formerly known as runningboar
