Cpk edc

Just call me totally misconstrued. I apologize for making a flippant (and indirect) reference to the fact that getting a CPK knife is basically now a contest favoring the computer savvy. I should have been more direct

Winning is based to a great extent on how well one can "play the post game" (JustinF). Many people don't have the time, skills or whatever to "prepare" for hours and develop a "system" (JF) to win regularly. Others love the challenge, just like with computer games. More power to them, but I think it would be nice to spread a little joy around. What started out as a reasonable process has become a feeding frenzy over in seconds. A special technical skill set has a great advantage. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but I think something like a lottery would be more equitable. Agree or not, I hope this makes my intent more clear. And, no, I've never played a computer game in my life. Never thought I'd need to.

Lottery and limit per time period per person would help immensely with spreading the love. It's got my vote. I'm always always always working when the post goes up.

I'd also be willing to do a partial prepay if it secures a blade.

at this early stage in the game, CPK is available only to those who are either on top of it, or who are willing to spend extra in the aftermarket.

as CPK grows, accessibility to products will improve.

those who were more diligent, more aware and more patient, in these early days, will be rewarded by securing a piece of CPK history, but we want EVERYONE to have a piece of CPK's future!

If there are only going to be 5 or 10 knives available per week, I would also like to see a stipulation of one blade per person, per sales thread Nathan posts.

I think Lorien just debunked those alternatives for now. I think that the best system would be some reasonable pre production orders with the same time scale as say Swamp Rat: 4-14 weeks. I think that with this small size of a Co, they can not afford to chase people down for payments and just take a meager token deposit, so it will probably have to be full on prepayment and I know that's a concept that some folks (I'm cool with it as long as order fulfillment does not take more than 4 months) will cringe at.

We're weighing the merits of some of these alternatives such as a lottery or pre-order because I agree that buying a knife should be simple and straight forward and not require camping out on a computer and possessing some kind of computer-fu where you can open and reply to a new thread in 5 seconds. I mean seriously, how do you even do that? I don't want folks to feel like they have to jump through hoops just to get the gear they need. Buying a cool new knife should be fun, not stressful.

The problem, on my end, is increasing complexity of a sale. It's going to be a time-suck and I'm already insanely short on time. And as Casinostocks points out, I can't be chasing people down for payment.

Generally speaking it has been a long standing principle of mine to never take money for something that's not basically ready to go. This keeps me out of trouble. I have a terrible memory and I'll end up forgetting something or someone and pissing people off, and that's a whole lot of misery I like to avoid. I can't keep up with lists. But, having this new forum I can make a thread and use that as a pre-order list, and we're considering doing that on the Field Knives.

To the subject of limiting sales and rationing: I'm not policing anybody. As far as I'm concerned, if a person wants to buy two that's their prerogative. There are plenty of valid reasons to do this, the most common of which is to buy an extra for their friend, spouse, brother who is not on the forum so they can have a knife like theirs. Or a collector who want's a safe queen for their collection but also wants one to use. Where I draw the line is anyone who swoops in and buys multiples and then flips them. Speculating for profit raises the price and reduces the value of the work to the end user, and I have a problem with that. But to my knowledge that hasn't been happening. If it starts I'll exercise my right to refuse sale.

I hugely appreciate everyone's interest in our work, you don't know how much that means to us. I recognize the current limited volume is causing some shortages and heartburn. We're working on the problem and we are improving our output without compromising quality or value. We're on track to make twice as many knives the second half of this year as we did the first half.

A very fair and level-headed post Nathan. Thank you for listening and also considering alternative options which would also suit your own plans, process and procedure. I think that fair minded and reasonable people will understand the merits in a preorder system with a reasonable targeted fulfillment period of 4-14 weeks which seems to be industry standard. Plus a Mom & Pop operation (I do not mean this in any derisive or demeaning way, but to highlight the charming yet stressful and challenging aspects of it all) can NOT afford to charge $1 to get people in line. Those who wish to play in that real. ought to be ready to pay in full. Otherwise, it is the Fridays first-come-first-served system.

I apologize in advance if I sound like I'm meddling in your BIZ. No harm is ever intended, merely some unsolicited opinion!

I may be the odd man out here, but I like the system as it is now. I do feel for those like Timmy that are always working when the sale happens. This also happens to me frequently as I am out of town for work on most Fridays, and I miss out on those sales like this last one. But I guess the reason that I like it is that, like Lorien said, those who are diligent and learn the system will be the ones to score a blade. To me, that translates into those who want one the most are the ones working hardest to land the knife (I include myself in that assessment). Each and every one of us has exactly 24 hours in the day to get done what we need to do.

I know there are some great guys posting on this forum, and I think we need to take advantage of the friend network. Although CPKs are in short supply now, as time passes, some of use are going to end up with blades that we let go. I had to let go a field knife recently, and although I had a smooth sale on the exchange, I would have given the folks in this subforum a heads up had it existed at the time. Anybody that doesn't have the ability to accept PMs should at least consider changing that. I give guys shout outs all the time when I know they're looking for a model that comes up on the exchange, and of course that's not something you necessarily want on open forum if you want a chance! :) Again, many good people here, and they return the favor, it all comes around.

Great attitude demonstrated by my mentor and my teacher :)

I'm sure that Nate & Jo with Lorien will be able to work out a parallel alternative path

I was trying to work and was slow in composing my post above, so ended up post after Nathan, so it may or may not be of some value. :)

Thank you, Nathan, for the very thoughtful response. My daughter and I are happy owners and regular users of your now discontinued kitchen knife. Very versatile and sharp as hell. You do good work.

I'm ready, willing and able to rock on a CPK EDC whenever they go up for sale, and whatever method of sale is used, sight unseen. That's how much I believe in the CPK products, and Nathan and Jo.
I couldn't be happier with my LC and FK, and I'm very lucky and grateful to have them!

Thanks Nathan for getting on top of the ordering formats and letting us know your thoughts. Just testing the waters here since the forum started and really enjoying what I see.
I am usually a traditionalist folder kind of guy...but then getting some of the more popular GEC's knives were getting kind of hard to get. In the field I have been using my trusty Buck 119...but had to try the newer offerings, so I preordered a Survive! knife (3.5) but do not know when that will arrive and had no luck getting a Monday 2nds knife. I have been following Fiddlebackforge/was knives...but haven't able to shark it out yet, except for a Matador that I have been eyeing as a camp/kitchen knife ( and that was a left over one from a wed sale)...the smaller ones that I have liked have eluded me. Whatever method you pick for the field knife or edc, I will try my best to get one.

With time the market will "saturate"
Then it will be like buying a Chris reeves easy Peasey lemon squeezy ;)

Actually I like the way Nathan does it now
As it limits the "saturation" of his blades .

Right now they are probably one of the best values in knife preformance
Considering the time and efforts made by Nathan and Jo.

This is largely due to the fact (I'm assuming here so I'm probably wrong as usual) that they machine most of their knives with most hand work going to sharpening and or if you get a super sweet hand finished one..

But I suspect that if Nate was using more conventional methods he would probably have to charge more .

Like I said I'm a moron on my good days so take this with a grain lol
Just

Honestly how many people lives depend on whether or not they can make a fire in the woods with their chopper ;)

We do this cause we like to and I'll admit I think it's fun trying to win one. And it makes them that much more speacial.

Anyone can order a knife(busse) and wait but having a CPK is speacial (hopefully this paints the picture I was trying to convey )

Edit to the guys that use the Carothers for your work like the fellow that does the coco shells this doesn't apply to you lol just the rest of us who chop for fun ;)

^ I read it in Blade at some point over the course of time, where an seasoned cutlery industry fella pointed out that there is no such thing as a 'knife emergency'.

Point being, I guess, that the primal nature of feeling a need for a thing 'right now' is just that- a primal need. CPK understands your primal needs, and will approach its future with that in mind, but also with the idea that there is a big picture here and that your primal need had damn well better be completely fulfilled by providing you with the best fucking knives for your dollar. Period.

I'm speaking for myself here, based on what I understand to be the case. I have no hand in running CPK, but I'm pretty sure I'm on point with this.

If not, I'm sure I'll find out:D

A person that says there is no emergency that a knife can be of use is truly a moron :) primal needs or not a knife has been one of the oldest tools known
For a good reason .

Edit I will agree it's about as best as values that can be had IMHO as well lorein

And I like the fact that I can't just drop it in my cart and hit buy :)

Hate to be a butt head but ............ Let's get back to the EDC!

To respond to all the order stuff. Peter Atwood has been doing a simalar sales system for ever . But he randomly puts them up for sale so it give more people chances. And he does a lottery, the lottery is open for a day or so and then randomly selects the winners.
