CPK Pet Thread

My wife and I celebrated out 32nd anniversary 2 weeks ago, and in all those years our 7 year old Addie is our 3rd dog. We loved Ameretta, and Snickers who came after her too; but the heart-break was too great after each time one passed, and we'd swear off dogs "forever" when one would pass.

But that pet free time only lasted about 2 years before we'd miss having a dog, and got our 2nd or 3rd one. So we only had a 2 year break from 1998-2000 and another 2 year break around 2016-2018 where we didn't have a dog in the home. I'm going to be heart-broken again in about 10 years, and I don't know why we put ourselves through that over and over again.
The pain losing a dog is astounding, but dogs add so much to our lives that it is hard to imagine not having them around. A new dog will never replace a previous one, and it is hard sometimes to not compare them- the new ones are new adventures and memories waiting to add to the old ones which never leave.

We lasted three months after Smoky passed. We lasted ten days after Skyler passed. Seems we don't do well without a dog in the home.

(It was our 37th anniversary last week.)

The pain we feel at their passing is the price we pay for their love and companionship. They turn a house into a home.

My wife just threw away Bella's food and water bowl this past week

(I would have left them there forever, because this was the same place as our pervious dogs bowls)

Just an empty space now

Congratuation on the immense accomplishment, Elliott. 37 years of marital bliss, that is wonderful !

We’re debating whether or not to get another pup ourselves. When I came through the garage early this morning, I fully expected and sorely missed Kona’s single loud bark. She’d always let ya know she knew you were there that way.

Also, we have an extra large doggy door and BEWARE OF DOG signs that are a testament to her massive and majestic presence. The little bulldogs, although loved dearly, just don’t seem to size up.

We’ll think on the decision for a while. Then perhaps I’ll be reaching out to y’all CPK pet lovers concerning MEDIUM sized breed suggestions. I’m thinking loyal, even-tempered, formidable, male, and intelligent….and don’t any of you smart asses claim that I just described you, either ! 😜😉👊🏼

Not really a medium sized dog...... but our next will be another bull mastiff in my thoughts

But yea I feel ya bro

No one in our family will sit on the couch seat she would sleep on at night still

I feel ya brother and my heart goes out to y’all. I kept Kona’s harness and collar and still haven’t taken them out of the back of the truck yet. I need to scrub them both and hang them in my shop.

Your post prompted me to look in the hall and it appears that Wendy already washed Kona’s bowl and put it away. It is a gargantuan trough of a bowl so I’ll start using it as my phô bowl. Ooh, the thought of all that slobber, though . 🤣🤣🤣

It’s been a year Sept. we lost Riley our Beagle. A soul crusher for sure.

Her brother Rigley (11) is entering renal failure. My wife is beside herself. They’re inseparable.
He’s still drinking, but picky eating. She’s cooking for him right now. A light kind of chicken chunk soup agrees with him. To get him to eat 2 cups is a triumph.

My Mom consoled and counseled me as a kid when I lost a cat. She said, take peace knowing you gave them the best home you could.

Cleo loves some Jif!

And our 32 years is chump change? 😂

Also, you need a Golden Retriever dude - 4 out of 5 ^ not bad.

Olde english bulldog is a great breed. Athletic, strong, smart, trainable. Don't confuse them with a regular english bulldog, not even the same league.

Do your research on the breeder though. I wouldn't buy from anyone that isn't an ioeba breeder.

I've never met a more intelligent dog that's so eager to please. We socialized him a lot early on so he loves other dogs and people, but if you behave in a threatening manner, the guard dog comes out. He's scared the crap out of me when he came charging and growling because he didn't recognize me.

He's about 65 pounds and is very muscular. 85 pounds is quite big for the breed so you don't have to worry about them being too large.

The garage is pretty much my domain at our house, so my cat's water bowl is still out there. Even though he has been dead for years and my wife's one condition when we got married was that we would never have another cat. The bowl ain't bothering anybody, and I enjoy the reminder of the fat little a**hole.

Picked up the speed weasel’s girlfriend this morning to let both of them burn the crazy off in the woods.

Girl is a BEAST. Most ‘alpha’ female I’ve ever seen. Actually marks her territory, and stomps every male into the ground. We have no idea why, but she adores Huck. I’m reluctant to anthropomorphize stuff like this, but these two genuinely seem to adore one another. I’ve never seen anything like it, and Buffy’s owner is a breeder, trainer, kenneler, and does rescue, and she’s never seen anything like this, either.

I don't think you're anthropomorphizing anything. Dogs have varied personalities like humans, just not as pronounced. It makes perfect sense that some dogs just adore each other, while others dislike one another for reasons we don't understand.
