CPK Pet Thread

Way too much sadness recently. As a group, we have lost quite a few number of pet friends and also seem to have some with ongoing health issues and struggles, wishing them and their pet parents better health for better lives. I know that I just do not have it in me as a city dweller (living in the country, totally different though!) to have another dog after Roman (I am 61 and he is 3). I do not wish to trivialize the pain which some of you are going through whether dealing with a loss or dealing with illnesses. With that said, whenever I come across videos like this, I will just have to share them. Dogs are at times very silly, funny, cute and fun irrespective of their sizes as they fill our hearts with warmth and our moods with joy:

After looking like things were about to start going sideways again, they actually calmed down a while afterward and he's been quite relaxed now for a few hours. Sleeping peacefully next to me on the couch right now as I watch hockey / baseball and football. Was fine on his walk an hour ago as well.

If we get through the night like this, I'll be over the moon. (Fingers crossed.)

Dogs metabolize medications much differently than we do. In my experience, gabapentin is a great pain/nerve pain medication for humans and dogs, but I have never seen it kick in quickly. I sure hope that things calm down for y’all.

My pit has been battling an autoimmune issue that caused painful swelling in his feet. He has been on a slew of different meds and biopsies taken- finally calming down. I love animals and hate seeing them hurting.

Thanks, B. Your medical knowledge is always welcome. Hope your boy comes through this. I can't bear a dog, (or pretty much any animal), suffering. It kills me.
Thank you sir. His feet are back to normal size. He is taking Apoquel twice a day and Cyclosporine, plus Cytopoint injections and prescription food (plus pain meds). Just tapered off prednisone. Poor little guy likes to sleep in the bed, so I was having to carry him up the stairs.

Our vet is really great. He always takes the time to make sure we are ok with what he prescribes because dosing is generally so much different with humans. My wife is a nerd pharmacist so he always makes sure she is comfortable with meds.

Does he have severe allergies? Those are all allergy meds, right?

Allergies and an autoimmune issue. The Cyclosporine is more to suppress his overactive immune response. He has had allergies that caused ear issues in the past, then things spiraled into terribly swollen and oozing feet (nothing anywhere else). His feet got about 50% larger with impaired circulation to his toes, and I had to drain a few pockets of fluid while he was being treated. He got cellulitis and was on 2 different antibiotics. The vet took biopsies from all four feet and sent them to a pathologist as well as dermatologist for guidance. Has really been an ordeal. He is being his normal spoiled self this last week.

I knew of apoquel (Gus is on it occasionally/seasonally and thankfully his allergies aren't too bad) and the girlfriend's previous dog was on cytopoint for a few years. His allergies eventually got less severe for whatever reason and apoquel was sufficient. Sucks when they're suffering. Hoping for a speedy recovery for all the pooches.

So far, so good. Kobe made it through the night without getting up, wandering or hiding under the bed. Only gave original dose of the gabapentin at 11.30 yesterday morning. (Gave 6mg of Melatonin twice...once with the gaba, once during the course of the evening.)

Great relief...I don't even have words at the moment.

Now, of course, our cellular service is out locally, and landlines won't even connect with lots of folks and businesses, including the animal hospital.

WTF, Verizon. Get your act together.

BTW, any of you guys use Glandex with your pups? What was your take on its effectiveness? (I already give FortiFlora, and he gets a decent amount of fiber with his Science Diet kibble.)

Is he on any probiotics?
I have my goofball on Nutramax Proviable-DC because she has gland issues from the meds she’s on and this stuff has been an absolute game changer for her.
It may be worth asking your vet about next time.
I’ve also heard that plain Greek yogurt helps.

Kobe's been on this for a few months...

The vet is a fan of FortiFlora and was pleased when I mentioned that Kobe was on the product...but she suggested the Glandex at yesterday's powwow, saying that many find it effective for anal gland issues.
I'm going to give it a try...but was just wondering if any of our people had experience with it. (Well, by "our people" I mean their dogs. LOL.)

The probiotic in the Glandex, acidophilus, is, I believe, the Greek yogurt bacillus as I recall. Anyway, it won't hurt, it may just be throwing more money into the shitter. (Literally and figuratively.)
