CPM S30V Buck on Cabela's

Strangely enough, the S30V 110 blades are coated on the sides, but not the back.

I have one backordered and have "heavy use" plans for it so the coating probably won't last long ;). Is the BOS flame logo on the blade?

I haven't owned a 110 since the early 80's (dropped it into a lake). I'm really looking forward to this latest incarnation.

Please forgive a dumb question: What is the graphic that is etched on the Alaskan Guide Buck 110? I cannot make it out from the photos. I have one on back order and am just curious. Thanks, rob

I have simple review in Russian - but you may check pictures:

Yes, Bos mark is on the blade.

819SS is 59.5HRC. I am wondering is it the same for 110? Smaller knife, may be hardness on it higher?

Thanks, Vassili.

I just received my Vanguard, and it is beautiful! Fit and finish are superb, and the back is coated as well. Some quick testing on 3/4 in hemp indicates that Paul Bos really does know his stuff... Seems like Buck is the only manufacturer out there that grinds a thin enough edge for my liking. As for sharp, well, that's a given with Edge 2X, absolutely blows away the competition. Can't wait for the 110 backorder to be filled!

Thanks Buck!

Oh MAN, I hope the Vanguards last until next month! I have been looking for a replacement for my old, 420HC Vanguard for FOREVER. I thought I had it when I managed to score a Master Series Vanguard.... right up until my wife nabbed it from me as her camping/backpacking knife. I've been waiting for a good one ever since. This one is IT, if they will only last until I can recover from the buys this month.

The pics and write-ups did it for me. I am severely impressed. Beautiful knives. Unfortunately got to wait almost a month for it to arrive as they are back-ordered. Patience is a virtue that this old man is quite short on. But, if the pics are any indication, the wait will be worth it. :)

I wouldn't place any bets on that, that TaIN coating has a rockwell of way over 80!

Bos has done testing, and heat treats all S30V that goes through at 59.5

I also have the Vanguard & as already said, it's a great looking knife. Can't wait to put it to use. You won't be disappointed if you get one. My only regret is not ordering a 110 at the same time. Like everyone else, I now have to wait a few weeks for that one. At $60, the 110 really is great bang for the Buck. (pun intended)

Holy Light Sabers! I know I'm preachin' to the choir here, but I just got mine today (earlier than expected!) and am totally entralled with it. Freakishly sharp too... I already cut myself with it! (D'oh! )
I love the coated blade, which I didn't think I would. I do however have a few questions... there is some lateral blade play when it is closed, is this ok/normal? There is no blade-play when opened however. Also there is a "gritty" feel when opening it, again... ok/normal? I also noticed that there is a notch where the tip would contact the inside of the knife when closed.... ok/normal?
All in all, I like it and will keep it and use it. This is my first Buck knife, and it just may push me into the custom 110's!

I don't think it is normal, but probably OK. I wouldn't send it back for this.

Again, not probably OK; give it a good cleaning with pressurized lubricant (like spray Rem Oil, or even WD40) and it will probably be fine. Again, wouldn't send it back.

Not normal, NOT OK in my opinion. I'd send it back in a heartbeat, to either Cabelas, or straight to Buck. I'm sure it will be made right either way.

All just my opinions. I've had many Bucks; some of the best craftsmanship out there, and their "materials" are getting better and better. All the while maintaining the "value" of their knives by not pricing them exorbitantly.

Also was surprised to receive my 110 yesterday. Very nice. Mine also has that gritty feel when opening it, but it's getting less noticeable the more I open & close it. Should go away completely with a little lube.
Was a little disappointed to see alot of scratches (very fine) on all the bolster's. The brass on my Vanguard didn't have any at all. Not worth sending back for that, but I'm wondering if that's pretty common with these 110's. Except for that, I'm very pleased with it.
Not too impressed with Cabela's packing of their order's. No packing material at all in the box, with both my order's. Pretty lame, I thought. I let them know they should do better there.

We're in the same boat here, Mongo. I love the coating too and wasn't sure I would. I just got the knife today and I have the same blade play when closed, the gritty feel when opening and the notch from blade contact with the inside. It snaps closed pretty hard if you let it. I don't remember any blade play with the 110 I owned in the early 80s.

Glad to see that someone else has the same "issues" with their Cabela's 110. I'm not upset enough with any of them however to send it back. This is my first 110, (not counting a servicable Schrade clone) so I have nothing to compare it to.

I'm undecided on that at this point. FWIW I've noticed that you have to push the blade past it's resting position to get the edge to actually touch that notch. The sheath is tight and does push the blade in somewhat but doesn't appear tight enough to push the blade far enough to touch the notch. So how did the notch get there?

Probably during closing, the spring is strong enough that if you dont ease the clising, it will snap it and but that notch there.

WOW!! A true beauty. Probably be a while till I can bring myself to use it. Right now, just sitting here admiring the workmanship and all. I am truly impressed with this piece. A definite collectors piece. Maybe I will find a display box to put it in.

Ancient Mariner... I don't know about this being a collecter piece because I'm sure Cabela's and Buck are going to sell a ton of them. Take it out of that display case and use the bejeezus outa it! This knife cuts like a dream, it begs to be used!
