CPM154 and the future

Sal,
We've recently seen some production folders released with this steel. Overall, the reviewers and general concensus is that this steel is excellent and has a lot of potential (we know it's not a novelty). I'm wondering what the chances are that we would see a Golden or Taichung model using this steel? For those that are not aware, I'm not referring to 154CM, it is quite different. In my opinion, a Mlitary, Para2, or Manix variant in this steel would be an excellent platform to try it out on. What would the target hardness be for a Spyderco model using this steel, 60-61?
Thanks,
RD

That is an excellent idea. One I have wanted to see for awhile. I think there are only a few production companies that have used it? Kershaw, and Boker? I like the platform suggestions as well. Perhaps if we could get a dealer to request a sprint run in this steel?

S130, it would be nice if a run could be commissioned. In my mind, it seemed like a steel that was left out on the back porch. The most popular models that people are likely to use are a shoe in for the platform ideas. I'd love to see how Spyderco heat treated the steel.

Indeed. I love the CPM154 I have used. I know Gpknives has done several sprint runs with Benchmade. If perhaps enough people kindly inquired about their interest in doing a Spyderco sprint run? Or another dealer. Dealers doing the exclusives seems to be the way to make new steel flavors happen.

Sounds great to me. I'm never sure why companies don't use more CPM154. Custom makers seem to love the stuff and I've heard it's quite easy to machine and grind. Maybe availability is an issue.

My guess is cost. Cast ingot steels are probably not only more readily available than PM steels, but also cost less.

Agreed, but S30V has, in many ways, become the industry standard as a PM steel. And considering it has a reputation as being somewhat tricky to work with I would think that, barring availability issues, CPM154 would end up less expensive than S30V. (Obviously this is entirely conjecture on my part, and I could be wildly wrong.)

Over the long term, I'm hoping S30V and S35VN both get cycled out of the knife industry in favor of CPM154 as the standard 'high end stainless cutlery' steel. For the majority of folding knife uses, the extra toughness provided by the S30V isn't really needed - CPM154 is plenty tough. CPM154 builds on a solid foundation (154CM) and adds a little extra toughness and edge retention into the mix with their powder metallurgy process (higher achievable RC, too, if needed/wanted). Good stuff

Oh - and it's not a pain in the ass to sharpen, either!

Dearest Mr. Sal Glesser,

Please make a CPM154 Manix 2 XL, DLC, Black pocket clip, and your choice of G-10 Coloring.

Thanks!!

Its basically the same as RWL34, so it may be just a tad more easy to sharpen than S30V. Also more easy for a maker to work with, and thats one reason some custom makers use it. The standard steel Spyderco uses on many models(S30V) is a little tougher, and also holds a little better edge.
I would rather have S30V myself, but it would be something different.

I get wanting cpm154 for variety, etc... But are we really complaining about cpms30v? I know that was not the op's intention... But I hear hints of dissatisfaction... Can it be so??? I love s30v, especially spyderco's... From a usage point of view, I am very, very happy... The standard millie in my pocket right now attests to that... Just curious--are there real complaints against spyderco's s30v, and what is so much better about cpm154... I've read some copmarisons here and elsewhere, and they seem pretty much on par...

It's always fun to try out new steels. Put me in line for one if Spyderco ever does a sprint run of this.

And yes, a CPM 154 Manix 2 XL in DLC, would be simply; stunning.....

I would like to see a knife in CPM 154 also. A Para 2 would work I guess. But, I still want Elmax first!
