CPM154 and the future

Well, I know that Sal is a steel fanatic at heart, so maybe he would go for this in some form. After all, availability aside, the heat treat of this particular steel can be done pretty effectively by various manufacturers and dozens of custom makers. The likelihood of any mystery or problems has already been worked out (one would hope).

i've a feeling cpm 154 will stay more expensive than s30v, unless it gains as wide an acceptance as the latter.

I would love to see an Endura and a Tenacious with a FFG in CPM154 as they are my 2 favorite Spyderco knives.

We are not likely to see those particular models in CPM154. Japanese makers will not use "inferior" foreign steels. I also doubt that we are likely to see the most economic overseas version available inq a premium US steel. That is why I pointed out the most popular Golden models, it is more feasible to see those in any given sprint style configuration.

Yeah, I'm with Rev Devil on this one Sal. rc 61-62 would make it very nice . I really like this steel for a stainless steel and sort of prefer it to S30V. It's sure easy to sharpen and takes some nice edges.

Ah yes, at 61-62 it would be one of those cutters on a whole new level.

I would like to try out CPM-154 and I think spyderco would nail it. Maybe in a native 5? I'm not particular about the model I just want to try out the steel but I've always wanted a Native 5, too so that would be a win-win for me.

Indeed. If they ran it at this level it should beat out S30V at 59-60 right? I had a blade in CPM154 at 62RC. It seemed much better than another I had in 60RC I think it was. I could still chop some witht the CPM154 at 62. I got one small chip but it was very small and sharpened right out.

I think S30V might have harder carbides at 60Rc than CPM154 at 61-62. Either way, there is only 1 way to really find out. Please Sal!

I am with both of them. :)

Currently have one blade left in CPM 154 and it works extremely well, takes a very nice edge and has good edge holding even at 60 HRC, mine is a Fillet knife so it has to be flexible.

With a coarse edge it's a very aggressive cutter, but will also take a highly refined polished edge.

Vanadium carbides (S30V) are harder than Molybdenum carbides (CPM 154), the difference would be the finial hardness of the blade steel, s30V at 60 and CPM 154 at 62, that would give CPM 154 a higher compression strength. :)

I thought there was good reason manufactures ran away from 154 class steel. There are much better options, including the S30V. I'd be asking for A2, or 3V depending on what you're doing with your blades.

154CM, the non PM vers of CPM 154 is still widely used in the knife industry so they didn't run away from anything.

CPM 154 was designed as a knife steel for the Custom makers due to difficulties of working with S30V at the time and since then it has become the standard stainless for the Custom guys, they also use a lot of 154CM and ATS-34.

i'm on board with this.

a nice para 2 with cpm154 but what color g10 do we want the handles? haha

:)

I'd rather see it on a Manix 2 or a yojimbo 2:) There are so many para sprints already planned but not executed, i imagine this woudl go at the back of the line.
