creepy spyderco poster on ebay

It's all about judging a book by it's cover and a man by his clothes.

To me it isn't about this at all; it's about symbolism. Those Twin Towers have become powerful symbols and in today's context the disturbing nature of that image should be obvious. It was made in 1997..fine but in today's context it doesn't work as originally intended.

That doesn't make any-one who posted that they found this a disturbing image a racist or ignorant whatever. It doesn't make the guy who made the image in 1997 a bad guy either and I can't find where any-one posted differently.

The fervour some people have placed on protecting minority rights seems to me to be entirely misplaced.

you cannot tell he is a sikh from the picture, unless you are knowledgeable of all religions

Uh, there are lots of religions I know diddly about, but the man is obviously a Sikh. I know less about what Scientologists believe, but then, they're harder to spot...There are, what, 5 billion people on Earth, and who knows exactly how many religions, so it's ludicrous to make such a statement. You have a religion with easily identifiable members and millions of followers vs. unknown numbers of religions with fewer members and most without obvious external clues. Pretty damn silly statement.

Psst- hey. In the long term, we're all minorities, so you might wanna rethink that. The life you save could be your own.

C'mon guys. We made the ad and poster way before 9/11. It seemed like a good idea at the time. The knife was unusual in appearance, the maker was unusual in appearance and the idea for the ad was mine. It was actually a difficult add to make at the time.

When 9/11 happened, we stopped the distribution of the poster. For the same reasons expressed.

I have no idea how you would expect to sell a knife with some goofy looking guy riding it through the sky like a witch and a broom stick.

If it was supposed to sell the knife simply because the ad was just absurdly funny, then it works. :D

LOL :)

Has anyone else noticed that only the people that find this poster creepy are the ones with a low-post count?
Keep your night-light on. That CLOSET can be awfully creepy when the sun goes down. :p

I guess only a few enlightened souls post day and night to light the way for the uninitiated (and employed).

Don't be so hard on yourself!
Oh, please, this immature attention-seeker was being both rude and sarcastic. It's time to quit feeding this troll.

If you think an old ad with the WTC in it is creepy, what do you say about the current crop of WTC memorial pictures, some with the Statue of Liberty in the background, or a soaring eagle?

I think America can handle a retrospective image.

Maybe "an odd picture of an arab looking man" is a good way to get a discussion going that people could learn from. Instead of whine about.

i might not have a high count for posts but i know enough to ask questions when the head of a company is a moderator. i am familiar with Sikhs and just considered the ad a little humorous at the time.i do think it was more pc to pull the ad after 911 to avoid offending the uninformed.thanks for your time.

Personally, I get a whole lot more nervous when I see a greek-orthodox priest board a plane with a staff that is sign of his office (and thus allowed on the plane) than seeing a guy with a turban. But that's because that staff is about 5 feet long, has a steel tipped point at one end and a heavy steel knob the size of my fist on the other and generally looks more like something out of a Cold Steel catalog. But I degress.

For those not familiar with his bio, Jot Singh Khalsa has studied and lived for years in the Boston region. And the only thing that is crazy about him AFAIK are his knives, which are absolultely NUTS on all levels - unfortunately very notably their price as well. Personally, I think that "knifes" isn't the right word for his pieces of art..."edged gems" may be more like it. Sadly, I will never be able to affort one of his pieces. Heck, my girlfriends engagement ring will probably cost less than one of his knives :( .

"... a greek-orthodox priest board a plane with a staff that is sign of his office (and thus allowed on the plane) ..."

I was down at the Blade Show a few years ago, after 9/11, and I picked up a 4' hiking staff. No one even commented on it anywhere in the airport or on the plane.

Canes and such go anywhere.

A 4 ft hiking staff went with you into the cabin of the plane ?? I would not have guessed that possible. Crutches and/or a medical-purpose-appearing cane, yes -- but a 4 ft hiking staff ? hmmm....just surprising to me...but then, I fly about once every 5 years...

Nagod, you have no concept of the history of this Forum. If you had bothered to ask, you might have learned that it started with a debate over a pricing issue way back when, one that has long since been resolved. part of the resolution of that issue was the involvement of Sal Glesser and he has chosen to remain involved. I believe that this is a good example of his committment to the knife community, for he has used this Forum to float ideas and to receive feedback, not all of it positive, which is more than I can say for some companies. I am just grateful that a busy man such as Sal will take the time to put up with us here at BFC.

Esav has this disarming avuncular bearing that prolly lets him get away with more than the rest of us degenerates could. Plus, if he really wanted to, I'm sure he could trick some silly security guard into thinking he was harmless. :D

Yeah, the bangle's what I look for to be sure.

In my high school, there were three Sikhs (brothers, in seperate grades), and they got picked on mercilessly by the 95% white student body. The guys just let it roll off their backs every time. The _one_ time I'm aware of that one of 'em was forced to put up a fight, he kicked the two football players to the curb. The white kids didn't stop making fun of them, but they sure as hell never laid hands on 'em again.
