CRKTs 2017 Lineup

I bought a Pilar out of curiosity, looked like a cool design. It's a pretty solid little folder and was just $25. I like the way it fits in the hand, blade was plenty sharp out of the box, and the open/close action is very smooth. Framelock is a plus, but this thing is a brick. Feels pretty heavy for it's size, 4.2 oz. for a 2.4 inch blade. I do like the design and ergonomics of it though, I know CRKT goes after the budget/value market with their price points and material choices (stainless steel and 8cr13mov blade) but I wish they would up their game a bit. They use a good steel on this (maybe s30v) as well as a titanium frame instead of stainless and it would be a decent EDC choice imo. Also needs a little thumb jimping on the top.

I picked up a Pilar as well based on the design - it's a stout little knife. Blade steel may not be the best but I was pleasantly surprised at the fit and finish, especially considering the price.

This is why i dont buy crkt's anymore.

I have to admit, the Crossbones has grown on me. I don't need a gents folder in M390 (I don't cut so many gents that I need the edge retention ;) ) and it has a nice look to it. I could see spending a bit of money and tossing it in my fancy pants on the rare occasions needed. Only problem is it would be competing right with my Urban Trapper and that's a tough fight to win.

LOL Nothing says hard work like 8cr13Mov, amirite guys?

For $35 bucks, YES looks like a great beater. That steel sharpens wayyy easy too. Rock a 300 grit diamond edge deburred on ceramic for that bad boy.

I'd love to see what it can do.

That's hard for me now that $35 can snag me D2 in a respected model. And I honestly like D2 a lot.

D2 is great but i still like a well heat treated 8cr13 blade. You can go ham on it and then spend 5 minutes to sharpen it right back to razor sharp

Like others have said, I think CRKT has some great designs over the years, I just wished they would upgrade the blade steel. I'd love to have a M21-04G with S30V. Heck, even VG10/154CM would suffice.

'Knife people' tend to be overly concerned with the latest, greatest steels. As long as it's not defective, steel is a relatively unimportant factor in an EDC knife IMO. Nothing wrong with 8Cr13MoV in that sub-$40 price range.

I would agree with you, if we're talking about an EDC knife. To me, that knife reads as something meant for hard work, and I just wouldn't use 8cr for such a purpose. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I like the ritual of sharpening and 8CR13MOV is fine by me.

I just got my Pilar and its magnificent! I'll be carrying it for the next few days as the Sebenza sits on the nightstand.
