Crocodile Dundee Knives....Would You Pack and Use One?

****This quote by Esav from the second link is all I need to know:

Downunder knives are a fraud, the company was banned from Bladeforums. They are based in Finland, where they have a shaky reputation as a knife dealer, and the knives are made in China. "440C", sure.

******

That's interesting.... 'Cause I live in Finland and -certainly- I've not seen their shops or anything about the company of that name that has anything to do with knives here, in Finland...

They don't have shops in Finland, Australia, or anywhere else. They import knives from China and sell them. They MAY have an office in Finland or may just be incorporated there.

I just looked and there is something I do not like about that knife and it is a huge point of failure on knives that do have it, like the CS trailmaster and recon scout. Here is the pic, can you tell what it is?

The squared off corners where the tang meets the blade are prone to break under stress. Of course if you don't use it for chopping, or batoning, or prying , or stabbing, you should be okay.;)

ding, ding, winner. Stress risers will fail under hard use. Terrible design. I might be willing to pay $50 for one but not $200

Based on the Opee query it seems there are several issues here.
1. Do you want to know if other members would purchase and carry this manufacturers two specific knives and if so which one and if not, why?
2. Would other members carry a big knife similar to the one in the C Dundee movies?
3. Is carrying any big knife something members find practical and actually do?

Good questions all. There are currently over 23,000 active members of this forum so opinions are going to vary. And you could post this question in Wilderness or Prac Tac and get a huge difference in response than in Gennie Dee. But since you asked, I will throw in my two pennies and try to give you a pro bowie answer.
So far the majority of the replies have been from members who do not think a big knife practical. I on the other hand, do. I carry many big fixed blade knives as my EDC's. Dundee's movie blade is a classic clip point Bowie of which you will find hundreds of reputable manufacturer's offerings. This particular Bowie blade pattern is the most replicated fixed blade pattern in history and that in and of itself is an anomoly as no one really knows what Jimmy's namesake actually looked like. Bowies run from 8" to 14" and you can go longer from there.
The Western W49 and the Case 286 were both Bowie knives replicated after a WW II US Military prototype that never saw action but did get contracted to manufacture. Case and Western were two of the shops that were awarded contracts to build them so at one time at least the military thought the 10 inch Bowie a practical design. Bucks 119 and longer 120 are classic bowie patterns in 6 inch and 7 3/8 inch respectively. With that in mind, With all the good quality knife makers out there who offer good quality bowie knives
1. No, I would not purchase or carry these two knives.
2. Yes. Dundee's knife is a bowie and many of us are bowie afficianados.
3. Yes, I carry and use a bowie knife daily.

To really get into the discussion ask if anyone has used a large bowie for self defense or big game animal field dressing or carried a bowie as a concealed carry. You'll get a wide variety of responses. Try your question in some of the more "Big Knife" friendly sub forums to get some ideas where to best purchase this type of knife.
To answer your question about the Rambo knives, the original Rambo was hollow handled and there's a thread in Outdoor Wilderness dedicated to hollow handle knives. Personally if your pretty much set on a knife modeled after a movie prop then commission one of the custom knife makers found right here on Blade Forums to make you one. You'll be very pleased and the knife will be actual not a prop.
My primary EDC is a James Terrio custom Fugitive in 8 inch blade. James hosts his own knife makers forum right here on BF . Look under Terrio Handmade Knives to see some quality Tennessee hand forged knives. And with all due respect there are other knife makers here, such as Mr. David Stifle, that turn out a wonderfully hand crafted knife that will truly epitomize the expression
"Now That's A Knife!"
For a real treat, look up the term "Busse Battle Mistress".
If you want to carry big then do it right and leave all that hollywood movie prop stuff back at the studio lockeroom. Get yourself a real bowie and enjoy. :D

This is the main thing that has kept me from buying a Cold Steel Trail Master, or Recon 7. I've seen too many pics and videos of broken ones (always snapping right at the blade/tang interface), to feel confident in the design.

I don't understand why they don't just round the corners, and improve the stability.

Thanks all.

I hate to heard that about the Recon Scout as that is the one knife that I have been wanting for a long time. I didn't know it had problems. I only had a mild crush on this Outback Walkabout, but I have really liked the CS Recon Scout with the 7 inch for a LONG time. Up till now I would've loved to have one.
I guess my next option is the Becker BK7? Is that a much better choice for a 7 inch BIG knife? Those 8 and 9 inch knives are too big for me, I think. I am just going to be hog hunting in the Sam Houston National Forest here in SW Texas. I don't think I'll be staying night and camping, but that could change.

Another knife that I have really liked for a long time is the SOG Bowie....the BIG one, is it the Super Bowie or something like that? Yeah, I really like that knife too. Are you all now gonna tell me that one sucks too? It'll be my luck.

Better to find out now before buying though than to find out after they have my money and it's on my side.

Thanks all.

Have a good one.

If I could find one for a decent price I'd buy one and use the heck out of it just to see what happens. Why not??

Thanks all.

I don't know anything about the SOG Bowie, but I believe SOG imports all their knives.

I have a BK7, and I can tell you it is an outstanding knife. If you want a USA made quality knife with a lifetime warranty, i think you would really like the Becker. It's not a 1/4 inch thick "over built" sharpened pry bar, but it is tough and strong enough to take anything you throw at it. Outside of negligent abuse.

IMHO, you can spend more, but you will not find a better knife than the Becker.

Um, did you not see the history on here that Esav reported? I guess if you are okay supporting a nefarious company that has been banned here, go right ahead, but that would be a reason "why not".

Is it true that the tang on the new O1 steel Trailmasters and Recon Scout knives have been radius ed to avoid stress risers?

I'd pass on the crocodile Dundee knives from that particular company, however I've seen a few customs made that looked just right and I'd have no problems carrying and using one. Same for the Lile style knives, while I wouldn't use one of the cheap factory models I've used a Martin custom quite a bit and its a great knife. However you start to run into some pretty steep prices for those types of customs. Just depends on what its worth to you.

Was it worth it to me? Absolutely I love it and love using it.

Thank you I was really pleased with it, the water was squirting through the saw teeth at a pretty good velocity and just looked cool.
