Crocodile Dundee Knives....Would You Pack and Use One?

I've owned the Down Under Outback knife before and I loved its quality. It is a very well made and very useful knife. My Only issues with that knife, and all Down Under Knives for this one issue, is that none of them come sharp. Their edge is started but that is it. They need to be sharpened.

Now, my other issues are that, for me, the handle is way too short. This knife should of had a much longer handle. And also, the single guard...I don't mind the single guard on knives...I do prefer the double ones though...but the single hook-like guard on this knife dug into my hand, making the knife very uncomfortable to use!!

Now, Down Under has come out with a new model called the Mistress Bowie Knife. With this newer model it appears the issues on the Outback, while minor and most likely only certain people had issues with...

But looks like Down Under fixed these issues and brought them about in this newer model.

I own the Down Under Mistress knife and gave the Outback knife to a friend of mine as a gift. But I just LOVE the Mistress Bowie Knife. It still came unsharpened but since I know how to sharpen knives and prefer my own edge style on them anyway, this is no big deal.

Still though, Down Under Knives should take sharpening lessons from TOPS Knives and Cold Steel Knives. Because those knives arrive super sharp and ready for use, right from the box!!

And I just LOVE when a knife I buy is delivered to me with an already razor sharp edge!!

Hey all,

I'm a lurker here mostly and love looking at the pics of your guys' knives.

A couple of the knives that interest me are the RAMBO 1 and the Crocodile Dundee. It turns out there is a company in Australia that makes a pretty darn good clone of that knife, which has an 11 inch blade or so, and now they have one that's shorter, with an 8 inch blade.

The BIG one

It's little brother, the Walkabout.....

As you can see, they are nice looking knives, a bit expensive, but a sweet blade. What I am curious about is whether anyone would actually put one on your side and use it. I mean after all, they are made to be used. In the videos they have on these knives they show the cutting and chopping they can do so they are not meant as wall ornaments.
I can see carrying and using the smaller one. The big one, I don't know about that.

What do you all think? Would you carry and use either one of these knives? What do you think of them? If you were going to use 1 of them, the Crocodile Dundee knife or RAMBO 1 knife, which one would you pick and why?

Lets hear your thoughts.

Thanks for your time.

Hi man!

All I may say is, same kind of "movie" knives fascinated me since I was kid.Rambo,Dundee, Predator, all beautiful large Bowie choppers that influenced tens of thousands of knive lovers and spark that huge interest in knives and I think non of these knives will ever be forgotten in our hearts from childhood, as we were mesmerised by them.

Yes, I am there with you....If I d option for close as possible knife to Rambo knives - I d go with Martin Knives, (if I had that kind of money to splash on knife, these ain't cheap by no means,so these are out of my reach) ,,,,, Speaking of Dundee bowie close reproduction of knife than yes, Down Under is also my option, as this is not cheap, but more realistic and affordable price option and I would definitely purchase and use this knife,I am actually waiting untill DUK will start offering The Outback - with new upgraded leather sheath,,,, than I will hit the button on purchase and come back with some feedback on it...always wanted this particular one in my collection....

Speaking of the Dundee Bowie, this is the best reproduction that I have ever seen. Kangaroo lace handle, hornback crocodile hide sheath. Made by Earl Blackmore of Hellfire Forge.

There are larger photos of it on his website. Good stuff!

This is great find TAH.Thanks for suggestion. Do you have this particular knife from these guys?

I was trying to look up their website, but it's under reconstruction... What materials are used on this knife (steel - handle) what way it is made what's the price tag?

Seriousbladeno1,

I do not own a Dundee Bowie, but I have always liked the design. You might be able to have your questions answered here: http://hellfireforge.deviantart.com/

Here's another photo of it. Pretty impressive, IMO. :)

Problem with DUK, is I would have to see the tang construction before I would even swing the knife, and then it's still way overpriced for a Chinese special, and I would never give money to a shady company hiding their origins. Lose lose situation.

Buy an Ontario SP50 instead. Get a nice kydex sheath. That'll be money better spent. For the things that knife can do, a 14" tramontina machete would be better. Then spend the money on a comfortable carving type knife that's light and comfortable to wear on your belt.

If you're just wanting to collect things that catch your eye though, it looks good! Get it!

Yes definitely; Something large and sharp on the belt helps make up for the shortfalls of stubborn guncontrol regulations depending on the environment one is traversing. For the most part a standard working fixed blade is enough, but sometimes size does matter

Saw this optional sheath on a popular online auction site. Looks well made and better than the original Down Under sheath.

Thanks TAH, for nice pictures and also your info! I too love that design, I checked your link and it seem like these guys from Hellfire Forge are also lovers of giant bowie knives - Many of their products are really worth to look at. I will shoot them an email and will see, what they will say about their blades....

By the way that custom sheath you posted is very similar to upcoming new upgrade sheath from DUK, there are few differences. They call it Mark II and I love it's design from pictures.... I don't mind who and where will be made Dundee reproduction Bowie, as far as it will be solid knife! You really hooked me up to them guys from Hellfire Forge,,,, they made some amazing large blades.

Thanks

Thedemonbeast - I noticed the handle is somewhat too short and fully agree - it should be longer. If they make longer handle, the whole blade also shall be upscaled to keep its symmetrical shape intact! I well believe what you say, you love it's quality, forged 440C must be great, durable steel, many high end quality manufacturers and famous brands were and still are using this steel... The Outback in comparison to Mistress have thicker blade in ratio according info... but Mistress seem impressive hell lot of knife for the money. It must be fantastic chopper too....

I would not buy one.

I like cold steel, but I'd never buy one of their stub/cable tangs. Laredo, Naches bowie, etc.

I owned a trail master in San mai for about 10 years.

A big old Busse, or Swamprat, or Scrap yard in that price range would be my choice.

If I wanted the shiny steel, with stacked leather, I'd grab a Falkniven Thor (they are more).

Or, I'd shark the cutom forum.

A lovely custom made 11 inch bowie with cpm154 and lovely sculpted wood handle just sold for 100 less than these shady imports of dubious materials.

Too many very solid knives in that price range to blow the money on Outback Knives

Even if this was not a Nercro-thread!

But since it is a Zombie thread, I'll slay it with my Busse KZII

IT is that simple. If you are buying one of these you are doing it for the looks, which is fine, just know it is not for the materials, build quality, or backing of a solid company. Just know what you are getting into.

With what Busse is doing with battle grade stuff and what the kin offer, you can get a quality product from a known quality company, of known origins, and known materials for a similar price. I don't even see this as a consideration.

Right?

I'd add, Nathan Carothers (sp) light 3v choppers are in that range, Survive Knives, many others, and, really lovely customs pop up too.

I agree with what some have been saying above. I would go with a Bushcraft knife of whatever size the person prefers. They will do great for any job you have, and they can take a hit!! I have a custom CPM 3V 5.5 inch blade I got for free that came with a custom 3V machete I ordered, cause the order took so long they sent it with the machete, a type of compensation. I have to say I am so happy they sent me one, I use that thing a lot!! You can do anything with it you can think of, and it just keeps going. Not to mention that steel is amazing, gets insanely sharp and can take a beating!! It is a knife you would want to and could work all day with, great ergos, and can trust to help you in any situation.

Everyone has their own style. I guess I like simple. I also think you could find a better made Bush knife for cheaper. A nicely made knife like you had pictures of, a nice one would be spendy!! not sure though, never looked into it. I have to admit, some of those pictured above are some great looking knives.

You, once again, nailed it. It appears that what seriousblade wants is a movie knife and that trumps everything else.

Which, of course, is his call. But is so much more efficient for everyone if folks are just open about what they want. I mean that Carothers knife looks like an amazing piece of functional craftsmanship.

But its not what Crocodile Dundee carried. And we just end up getting stuck in the DUK morass over and over.

Maybe, seriousblade, you opening a "DUK knives appreciation" thread would be a good idea, so we dont get sucked into offering advice that you dont care about for the nth time. Then you can talk about those knives with other fans, and if anybody came by and bad mouthed them, you would be justified calling them trolls.

See? Efficient. Simple.
