Crossing the Rubicon

Great video! The chatter died down quick with this one. How's everyone's Rubicon holding up? I've got one in the mail so I'm very excited! Anyone having any issues with theirs?

Once I got the lock stick out with graphite, I fell in love with the knife. despite the bulbous handle, ergos are great. IMO, the nicest Spyderco to date.

The fit and finish on mine is excellent. The grind is even and has a very good factory edge. Unfortunately the ergonomics don't work for me. The end of the handle comes to a sharp point and the backspacer is a too rough. I won't carry it because of these issues. After handling the knife I just can't justify the price even with the nice fit and finish so I'll likely trade it.

The lock is carbidized and almost looks like it has some sort of insert.

I don't doubt you that the lockface was treated somehow, but are you sure it was carbidized rather than carburized? To my knowledge other Taichung Ti lockfaces have been carburized, but never carbidized. For that matter, does anyone know definitively what was done to prolong the lockface's life?

Either way, this is very good to know. I am loving my Rubicon so far, it is a truly excellent knife!

Well mine is beautiful! It does have a little stick though. Did you guys disassemble the knife to get the graphite on the lock face? Also, the lock up is pretty late which i'm not that worried about. I noticed late lock up and sticky locks have been pretty standard on the new Taichungs (Bowie, K2, Chubby, Rubicon). I'm curious what Spyderco's policy is on premature lock wear and what the protocol is when the lockbar meets the liner on the other side. Aside, the Rubicon is very smooth in it's opening and closing. Nice strong detent. Love the jimping on the flipper tab. Also appreciate that there isn't an internal stop pin on this one.

Just put the graphite on the tang of the blade where the liner hits, as you open and close the knife it will get on the lock bar as well.

The fit and finish on mine is excellent. My only issue with it is the thickness of the damn thing. I'm my opinion, it's simply too damn thick for what it is. It does carry okay however but due to the thickness, I just don't see it pushing any knives out of daily rotation. It will however stay in an EDC role for me as it is simply to beautiful not to carry.

still waiting on some comparison pics ;)

Here's one from a while back:

Here's a comparison picture of various Spyderco folders all with various types of Carbon Fiber scales.

For any of you folks who have owned your Rubicon for a while now: How's the lock bar holding up? Seeing any wear and moving over past where it originally set in when it smoothed out?

I too love my Rubicon.

My question stems from a recent bad experience with a new Emerson Sheepdog Bowie flipper. The titanium lock bar wore across to past 100% and had blade play within the first couple of days of purchasing it brand spanking new.

I'm encouraged to read that the lock bar on the Rubicon *may* be carbidized/carburized to improve durability. I'm just hyper aware of the Ti lockbar's engagement on the back of the blade after that Emerson debacle. I'm very interested to see if Sal see's this and chimes in on the carbidizing/carburizing (if in fact something was done in the manufacturing process.)

I got one but I never carry it. I'd but it's just not really my style. But it sure is beautiful to look at

Once broken in, mine settled around 60-70% engagement depending on how hard I flip it open. I don't think the lockface is treated in any way, but it has lasted longer than other Ti linerlocks I've owned.

The only issue I've had with it is that it feels slippery with sweaty hands. Maybe some texture would benefit the scales.

My rubicons lock is still the same as i got it in december last year [emoji1] its my favorite of my collection at this point only the mamba and the nirvana are going to match it[emoji1] [emoji1]
