Crucible Industries Update

In terms of new naming, would it be possible to simply replace "CPM" with "NSM" in the names? Most AFI's know the CPM naming convention, and this change would be easy to understand and correlate between old and new, for end users and everyone else in the industry.

For instance,
- CPM-Cruwear -> NSM-Cruwear
- CPM-S90V -> NSM-S90V

Or would this approach be considered to be too similar to the original registered names and break some law?
That would violate the trademark names.

We like the old Crucible names too, but with the trademarks now owned by others, we need to rebrand to stay compliant. The NSM + number or name helps show it’s from a trusted source and closely related to the original grade—just with more supply flexibility moving forward.

Thanks for sticking with us as we make the transition.

Ain't nobody going nowhere. ☺️ 🍺

Knife Steel Nerds has a great interview with Bob from NSM discussing things with Dr. Larrin. I read the transcript, and I found it very informative as well as enlightening. The investment, knowledge, training, space, and time it takes for these folks to get things right I think is not fully appreciated or even realized by those of us who buy knives.
Thank you Dr. Larrin and NSM for all you do.

Here it is:

3V will come from Erasteel and the name will remain the same. M4, Cruwear and S90V can come from Carpenter Technology and Erasteel. The names will change since they are dual sourced. M4 PM has been the standard name outside of the cutlery world so that's what we'll be going with once we run out of CPM M4. NSM Wear and NSM 90 for the other two?? Let us know what you think.

Right now, our focus is on making sure the steel is available and high quality. As the supply stabilizes and we get a better sense of long-term costs, we’ll do everything we can to keep pricing competitive.
What about Spec-wear as an alternate for Cruwear? Niagara “Spec”ialty Metals.

Could go 90Spec for S90V and so forth.

Just an idea. :)

I think there are some special conditions regarding Cru-Wear from what Bob explained to me earlier this afternoon...but I'll let him cover all that when he's got the time, rather than inadvertently misreport what he shared. (Some of the other steels have already had new monikers selected as well.)

So basically what you are telling me is that I’m late to the party. 🤣😂 Thanks, E!

I didn't even know there was a party.

I only know that it came up during our conversation earlier today that was focused primarily elsewhere.

"The steels formerly known as CPM Cruwear and CPM S90V will be renamed NSMwear and NSM 90PM, respectively."

I still have a pile of S90V and am happy to hear that the same steel will be available under a new name. Once my stock is gone, I intend on differentiating by marking the steel appropriately. (I just received stencils that say CPM S90V on them).

I am VERY excited to try the MagnaMax when it becomes available.

Glad to see them continuing with these steels but the name changes are annoying. I would have been fine with dropping the CPM or calling it NSM S90V but NSM 90PM doesn't quite flow...

The dissolution of Crucible and the surrounding events have made things chaotic, and the naming feels as though it reflects that. Trying to maintain familiar names without using the same prefixes and suffixes is challenging, especially when there’s trademarks involved, but I reckon no one will get all worked up if you elect to call it NSM90.

It could be way worse, most of the the time a steel has multiple names, they are completely different and hard to remember. I still confuse PD1 with BD1, instead of Cruwear. Keeping the 90 makes it easy.

Funny but a good example. (I also hate the use of what has become most widely known as a hashtag in the formal name for PD1.)

Speaking of BD1, remember an issue between BD1 and BD1N a few years back. Spyderco had upgraded some models that had previously used BD1 to BD1N and dealers failed to update the listings. I think some other listings just went on to confuse BD1 and BD1N. With community perception of BD1 not being great at the time, I remember talk on the Spyderco forums about it hurting sales for those knives and also retarding interest in BD1N.

It could be way, way worse. They could use the same naming conventions as the pharmaceutical industry.
On the other hand, it could be a lot cooler if they named knife steel recipes after, say, heavy metal bands...

Ok, maybe they don't roll off the tongue any better than the going standard, but it wouldn't hurt if at least one of the Pacific NW makers did a run in Nirvanax, right?

The good news is that good steel will keep rolling, regardless of what they call it.
