Crucible Industries Update

It could be way, way worse. They could use the same naming conventions as the pharmaceutical industry.
On the other hand, it could be a lot cooler if they named knife steel recipes after, say, heavy metal bands...
Maxametallica
Black Sa90Vath
Magnadeth
BeheM390th
S35VNightwish
Mötley Crüwear
Korn390
Ok, maybe they don't roll off the tongue any better than the going standard, but it wouldn't hurt if at least one of the Pacific NW makers did a run in Nirvanax, right?

The good news is that good steel will keep rolling, regardless of what they call it.

Totally calling mine Magnadeth now.

. . . the name changes are annoying . . . NSM 90PM doesn't quite flow...
Predictable names , trying to make things easy, wanting things to flow _______

To quote from an obscure British Comedy TV series that I am addicted to ( very loosely based on the Douglas Adams Dirk Gently books ) :

_______ are all a product of the same ill conceived desire to attempt to impose order on the world . What their proponents fail to understand is that we must embrace chaos if we are to come to an understand of the world in all it's complexity .

Let's circle back to the topic at hand please... or we will need to do some pruning.

I know. I’m awful.

My whole point in continuing to post in this thread, though, is to demonstrate that there are LOTS of forces in motion that are actively solving problems created by the vacuum that Crucible’s collapse created, chief among them being Niagara Specialty Metals.

You're not to blame, Matt...the info is greatly appreciated...it's just that we have a tendency to meander...you may have noticed...and this thread is too valuable to have get lost in the weeds.

(Keep it up and you'll give folks the impression that we're not friends. ☺️ )

3V will come from Erasteel and the name will remain the same.

This is convenient! It's a steel I have used a bit and hope to use again.

M4, Cruwear and S90V can come from Carpenter Technology and Erasteel. The names will change since they are dual sourced. M4 PM has been the standard name outside of the cutlery world so that's what we'll be going with once we run out of CPM M4. NSM Wear and NSM 90 for the other two?? Let us know what you think.

Perhaps I missed it elsewhere, but is there, or will there be, a published list of all the transition names of the alloys?

It’s because we’re friends that everyone knows that I’m to blame.

Always.

🤣

Joking aside, though, I’m still hearing guys worrying about whether or not stuff will be available. By now, it should be abundantly clear that things are moving right along, and any rumors to the contrary are unfounded.

Might have to bring you on as our marketing guru. I'm still catching hell for my lack of imagination with S45VN.

Bwahaha! The knife industry couldn't withstand the controversy of having both Magnadeth knifes and a Maxametallica knifes

"Magnadeth grumbled, 'My blades are sharper, but everyone just flocks to Maxametallica because their knife sheaths are, like, slightly shinier.'"

"Whenever Magnadeth saw a Maxametallica knife, he'd mutter, 'Pfft, another one of their 'original' designs... I practically forged that idea in my sleep back in '83!'"
.
