Crucible Industries Update

I like how Spyderco puts the “CPM” in front of MagnaCut. Some makers don’t do that.

Pretty sure Magna Cut has Only been in particle metal form....? For sale/use
Other steels which have been in multiple forms like Cruwear and D2 behave very differently when they are from ingot form

Good info. My intended point was that some makers only stamp MagnaCut on the blade. With Crucible possibly closing their doors, we may not see the CPM portion of the stamp much longer.

Because of that, I wish all makers would use the CPM stamp while they still can.

I've thought often we live in the golden age of knifedom. This makes me sad that we will look at Crucible manufacturing as one day in the long ago past where steel alloys were perfectly produced and highly preferred to what will lay ahead.

I'm not all doom and gloom, but this hurts and will have a huge impact on future metallurgy.

cpm was not the only pm game in town.... remember there is still the bohlers-uddeholm pm like s390 & vanadis 4 -> https://www.uddeholm.com/us/en-us/products/uddeholm-vanadis-4-extra-superclean/

I hope that Larrin Larrin is in discussion with them to ensure a future source of magnacut etc ; )

I was just up at Niagara Specialty Metals this morning, and it seems that Crucible has been busy fulfilling orders. Bob nsm nsm and I did a quick whip through the lot as we chatted, and he pointed out that their inventory is solid, with roughly a year’s supply of Magnacut in stock, among many other CPM alloys, as well as others...

Great pictures thanks for posting!

pointed out that their inventory
It is a miniscule thing but some how I was surprised to see the id of the bars on the ends were not stamped into the steel . I have banged id into steel at work for such. Mild steel or CroMo sure ; paint the end but specific high dollar alloys and heat ids etc., seems a little slap dash . Saves some money not to stamp. Magic marker works , I guess . . .
just saying .
PS : Yes , THANK YOU Mr. Gregory for posting the great photos !

The billets are indeed stamped. We repaint and mark them so they're easier to identify. Comes in handy in the dead of winter in Buffalo.

That inventory must be a hedge buy prior to the bankruptcy. They are shipping nothing out of that plant since the bankruptcy. There is no debtor in possession being executed so the operations are closed until the auction. With Erasteel likely to be the only buyer and their intent to leave the plant idle, CPM will be coming from their plant in Sweden more than likely.

Thank you for answering ! ! ! 🙏
Not sure what made me even say that .
Guess one of the old steel dudes I knew as a little kid was speaking through me 👻

couple of boring facts about me :
I grew up in a Steel Town about a mile from the mill (Pueblo , Colorado )
I could see a bit of glow in the sky from our house some times when they were pouring at night . Very cool !
My Dad worked for a separate heavy construction company and CF&I STEEL would hire them to ? reline ? the furnaces or some such ; all I know is it was called a Turn Around and my Dad would run three crews twenty four hours a day until the project was finished . He could barely hold his head up to eat his dinner some nights.
From about six years old I would go with him Saturdays to a steel bar a stone's throw from the mill called Muggsy's Inn , sip 7 Up and look at pickled pigs feet in huge jars behind the bar . Great people ,steel workers , iron workers , millwrights , welders and steam fitters like my Dad .
He piped steam from the Comanche coal fired electrical generating station miles to the steel mill . I am very proud and lucky to have had him for a father !
