Crude and I don’t care

Not my personal style but if you are happy, I'm happy.

Congrats on making a blade.

Next time round the butt end of the handle a bit more…so it looks exactly like a penis and not just kinda like one and market it to women. Boom! Shark Tank idea right there…..call it “The Penetrator”

You’ll never un-see it now!

An old machinist told me: God hates square corners. Those are all stress points that will lead to failure. The notches cut in the handle are pre made fracture points.

The heat treat will be all over the place on that. By the time the main blade is ready for a quench, all those thin parts will be damn near liquid.

But… Have fun. It’s a good project.

For sure. Comparing those cans of do-it-yourself dip to factory dipped stuff is like comparing do-it-yourself cold bluing to Colt's old Royal Blue finish. 😥

I like Plastidip. I've used it for years on my work knives (construction). The two knives below were both carried and used on construction sites, and to this day they still have their original coatings (several years old, three dips each). I also carried each knife daily for several years (separately), and despite frequently rubbing on my leather jackets and occasionally banging into things, the coatings held up.

One day at work, while wearing the bottom knife on my hip, I walked past a piece of wood sticking out on a site. The handle of the knife hit the end of the wood hard enough to yank the knife. My first thought was "Crap. I'm gonna have to recoat the handle tonight". Then a few minutes later I pulled the knife out to look at the handle, I was expecting a bad gouge in the coating, but all I found was a light scuff mark, which disappeared after rubbing it with my thumb. And like I said, it still has that original coating today.

Of course, I follow the instructions on the Plastidip can to the letter. Perhaps that's why I've gotten such good results. I know that there are a lot of people who never bother to read instructions, or wait the instructed amount of time for the coating to properly cure.

But I don't disagree that factory rubber handle coatings are better. I believe those pass through a heater to cure the rubber. Much more of an involved process than what you get from an $8 can of Plastidip at the hardware store.

Well I’m not a machinist, I have nothing but files and sandpaper. Not paying someone to make laser cuts for me.

The heat treat was just fine with absolutely no issues.

Then by your own admission, if the Heat treatment was fine, and done according to they way is supposed to, then the steel was flawed because you said it was not good in several places, and with the sharp angles and cut outs, there will be stress created breakage. While I commend your efforts at just trying to see what can be done for experimentation, I do not believe you are taking the critique of your project positively, just like the second part of the title of your thread, “…..I don’t care.”

1st off I stated in another comment that this stick of 80cr was obviously bad since my other batch turned out perfect. As far as the title can any of the people on this forum actually read between the lines about “I don’t care” obviously throwing electrical tape on it was me not caring. Having others say it looks like a d*** head is not criticism either, it’s morons with their mind in the gutter. Holding in the hand is far different that looking at a picture. “Criticism” from people like Shane are not helpful in any way whatsoever.
People have stated about sharp corners before, and I was going to address those but after 7 hours of work I said screw it, it’s not like I’ll be prying open boxes with it.

What do you want me to say? BY YOUR OWN ADMISSION, this knife is "crude". How many time do I need to agree with you in this thread???

And I was trying to be helpful - I suggested you find a tutor willing to mentor you in bladesmithing.

I cannot provide "constructive" criticism for your knife, short of saying "try again". No one in their right mind would look at that abomination and think it is a good, durable, quality knife. I don't know any legit knife maker that would be proud of something like this, let alone post it on a public forum.

If you like it, that is all that matters. I think it is ridiculous.
