CS Spartan

I did like their SRK, Trail master and some of the swords, but why ain't they making more of those good knives instead of mall ninja knives.

I do like their knives, just not all of them.
And I don't think the price and steel match together.

Don't get me wrong, this is tough love. All I'm trying to say is stop making toy-like stuff and get back into decent knives.

The OSI and Boar Hunter look pretty snazzy, too.

Bear in mind that the guard on those knives are very flexible. At least the Boar Hunter I handled at SHOT last year was. Too bad too...I would have loved it otherwise.:grumpy:

That Spartan actually looks like it might make a sturdy utility knife, assuming you work outdoors or somewhere where a 4.5" blade is appropriate. The price isn't too unreasonable for AUS8, either, and I have to admit CS gives it an impeccable heat-treat.

'Say what you will about Lynn Thompson?'
Thank you, I believe I shall.

I like the blade shape and the Triad lock...the company controversy is a moot point. I will definitely need to handle the knife before buying---the handles look like they could be excellent, or an ergonomic nightmare depending on the size of your hands.

The Triad lock looks like a real winner. It's not always possible to carry a knife clipped; so it lies in the bottom of the pocket and collects lint. I've had Spydercos (Manix, Native, old Renegade) and CS Voyagers fail to lock open because of lint jamming the lock. (Note: this doesn't happen with other lock types - Axis (and variants) and Liner locks (and variants).) I've found lint in the Triad lock on my American Lawman but the lock has not failed - impressive.

I just saw it on CS website, cannot stop laughing, LT must watch "300" 300 times.:D

Or, perhaps, he is a student of the history of edged weapons. Given how many of his designs, especially the swords, echo historical edged weapons I would say this is not unlikely. Also Lynn would not be the only knife maker to take advantage of a movie to promote a knife design...far from it.

Seems like CS are becoming closer to United, funny looking knives with unmatching steel + prices.

Didn't know unusual/original meant funny and junky like the company you mentioned. I had a shop when Spyderco first brought their knives out, some of the comments made about the were far from complimentary until people started using the knives. I feel this design has several merits going for it, great hand protection, very secure grip, easy to retain grip when wet, your hand will not slip forward if the blade encounters something hard when using is a stabbing motion. Great blade design as well, nice bit of recurve for cutting as well as lots of belly, should be a great slicer. And as pointer out the Tri Ad lock is amazingly strong. As for the steel, AUS 8 is a fine steel, it is used by many companies as well as custom makers because it is an easy to sharpen steel that had both good edge retention and stain resistance. As pointed out MSRP is seldom the selling price from dealers.

I did like their SRK, Trail master and some of the swords, but why ain't they making more of those good knives instead of mall ninja knives.

They do make those knives but the make knives for people who's wants and needs differ from yours, it is called diversity. Not everyone wants the same style knife you like. I don't think this even comes close to being a "mall ninja" knife, what makes you think it is one?

Seems to me this is mostly a "let's bash LT just because" thread. His ad type may be a bit over the top but it does what it is supposed to due...get attention, same for his videos. Doesn't change the quality of the knives his company sells.

The Spartan I love the looks of it, definitely my type of knife. I am pissed off because I know quality is going to be top notch with a strong of hell lock, practical design and low web price (stop the lame quoting of suggested retail no dealer in his right mind sells at retail.)

Why nothing like is being made in the US and American companies probably won't make it, even if asked to.

Also AUS8A is a good solid working class steel that is more than adequate.

You have to consider that Cold Steel prices their knives really high on their site, for example $194 for the recon scout which sells for around $75 online or $369 for a R1 which sells for about $170 online.
The Spartan will probly be sold for around $50.

I am glad Cold Steel amuses some people so much that they have to keep tabs on the CS website just to make them selves feel good about trying to poke fun at others.
Remember what your momma said about if you dont have anything nice to say?

wow, nice to see people talking about the spartan. Lets face it, no knife will please all of us but the spartan will be really great for what it is.

kiahs,

What part of KY are you in? I regularly do shows in Lexington and the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot. Stop by and we can talk sheaths - also will have some Spartans as soon as they are available.

I'm all the way at the bottom. :) I haven't attended any shows yet. Never have the time. Maybe one of these days.

I agree, and thanks, Andrew, for the cool lock (Tri-Ad) design!

I believe the knife will be a good knife. I, for one, like the overall look of the knife.

It may not be on my list of immediate purchases, but sometime I believe it will be one of the knifes that I end up getting.

The Kopis, in fact, was the greek predecessor of the Falcata, which in turn made a bit of a journey east where it evolved into the Khukri. At least that's what archaeology has postulated.

I like it too. I like the texture on the handle. One thing I like about Cold Steel is they do seem to think outside the box and come up with some interesting knives. I can't wait to see one of these first hand. I may just buy it.

It's not my cup of tea, but I own several Cold Steel knives and will probably buy more in the future, along with Spyderco, Boker, and RAT. And since Lynn Thompson is the guy behind these knives, I have no problem with the guy. In the past, I defended Lynn Thompson when some people were bashing him for a knife drill video. It was good solid training drills, but people hate the guy. Pretty soon I had a swarm of idiots bashing me for pointing out why the knife drills were solid--so much hate.....and so little to show for it ...oh well.

It looks quite nice actually. Don't know if I'll buy it. (I don't buy many knives at all) but it does look quite nice.
