CS Spartan

Bear in mind that the guard on those knives are very flexible.

That's the problem with worshipping Kraton.

On the plus side, that makes it seem like I can get rid of the top guard and subhilt with scissors and sandpaper if they don't appeal to me. Thanks!

Actually, the more I look at this knife, the more it appeals to me. I can think of many places where a blade like that would come in handy.
Hope the handle fits my hand okay...

I am glad to see that more and more BF posters are actually being rational re. CS and LT, rather than just falling into step behind the haters. Even if they are not fans of the company, its products, or its president, the visceral hatred is getting less of a foothold around here.

As for the Spartan- I am looking forward to getting one myself, though it is a little small for my EDC (i usually carry a 6" Voyager and/or a Scimitar). It is an attractive knife and, though I have yet to handle one, it appears that it will feel good in the hand- and you can't beat the Tri-Ad lock.

DngrRuss1,

I still hate LT for hiring Felix Valencia before Sal Glesser could hire him, so there! :grumpy:

;)

I'm sure I'm one of the ones being called a "hater" for disagreeing with the CS marketing and such.

I like Mr. Demko's designs for the most part and this looks like a pretty neat design. Not crazy about how radically the handle looks to lock your hand into a specific grip but I've never handled it so I can't really say and I'm sure LT and Mr. Demko know more about the proper use of a fighting knife than I do so I digress.

Looking through the catalog, I see some pretty cool designs.

No- not liking product or marketing or even LT himself does not make one a hater. But if you read enough (even the OP of this thread) posts about LT or CS, you would think that CS products were tempered by the tears of children whose puppies were shot by LT on Christmas morning. Sometimes the hatred and ridicule go way beyond rationality toward the ridiculous.

My comment was more of an observation that such bile is not going unchecked by other BF members- even those that do not particularly like CS or LT.

It was when I found out the knives were heat-treated by other methods that I finally realized Mr. Thompson was a big jerk.

No- Felix has not been at CS in 5 or 6 years. I have only seen him a few times since then.

Shows how much I keep up with stuff. :o Attended a few of his seminars in New England and he'd always teach the practical stuff and the cool looking stuff and then sell Cold Steel knives at a large discount.

I'll probably buy one, looks like a solid folder with some serious cutting power. The street price will likely only be around $50 too.

He is a leader in taking risks that many knife companies would not! Many knife compaines can NOT think outside of the box on blade designs. For that I give him an "A."

I've bought many Cold Steel knives through the years (actually ~20 years) and I often use many of their old standbys like: SRK (Carbon V), Voyager folders (with VG-10 steel), Recon Tanto (Carbon V), etc.

After looking at their website and seeing the new OSS and OSI, I started thinking about that OSI. Since it's a single-edged design, you don't really need that top guard.
A few minutes in MS Paint and I came up with this modification for the OSI (knife on the right):

Don't think there's anything like that in the current Cold Steel line-up and I think that would make a great light-duty, long-bladed utility/combat knife.

Cheers,
Mike

I like it. I want a Rajah so bad that I can't stand it. However I can't quite swing it yet.

I said it in the other thread and I'll say it here. I will most likely be getting one. I like the dropped belly. CS's handles tend to fit my hands better than anything else even if they look a little odd. The Spartan also has Demko's wave and his Tri-Ad lock, which is ridiculously strong.

Really no point in

a) Knocking a knife before it's even released.
b) Starting a thread for what seems like the sole purpose of trolling.

I heartily agree.

I like the design, though I question the chest-thumping marketing sometimes. Can't say anything bad about Cold Steel quality, and the choice to use AUS8 is simply taking advantage of economies of scale, which contributes to high MSRP numbers that are usually much lower from other dealers, as margins can be reduced. Also, specializing in one steel generally means a better, more consistant heat treat (At least, it should, if the company is really trying).

Would I buy the Spartan for self-defense/utility work? Probably not. Would I buy it as a cool toy? Very likely.

I can't stand Cold Steel knives, they are nothing but a big scam to uninformed and uneducated knife buyers. There "test videos" are a big load of s***, I bought a cold steel Ti-Lite when they first came out and the tip broke off stabing through a catfish' head. They gave me a new one and the lock failed multiple times while I was using it. I will never ever buy another cold steel piece of S*** again, EVER!!!!

Just my .02 but I think the CS spartan is F ugly. I am not a CS hater, I own a CS recon tanto in carbon V and bought a SRK in Carbon V for my best friend for his deployment to Iraq. I also own a Recon 1 and reguarly recommend that one as a quality folder for it's price range. I just don't care for the CS spartan'a appearance. Maybe you do, just an opinion.

I don't like the looks of the Spartan but the Tri-Ad lock seems to be extremely strong and secure, the handles look comfortable and AUS8 isn't that bad considering the whole package if the street price stays under $70 or so. Still, not my style but it seems like the knife can do what many people come to these forums looking for- a tough and relatively cheap knife.
