I'm not going to list out ten knives because there are too many Spydies that I don't have any practical experience with and I don't want to damn them based on knife store examinations. I do want to say something about a couple I own.

1) The Shabaria. ? Have some of you people that don't like it actually bought one and carried it around for a couple weeks? This knife backs more useful blade in a smaller package than anything else I own. I still pick up my Military if I'm going out in the field to really chop on something but for city and work carry I always slip the Shabaria in the right front pocket of my jeans. My Military doesn't fit right in there and my full size Calypso is too easy to scratch. I tried carrying my Military on the back of my waistband (with the clip under the belt). It was comfortable but every now and then I would catch a car seat or a soft bench seat in a fast food restaurant. I decided to discontinue that practice in the interest of fabrics everywhere and just carry the Shabaria. The design is sweet, the knife shape turns out to be very useful and the handle when open gives you a surprising amount of knife retention. Really, really try one of these before you pass it by! (And VG-10 steel to boot.)

2) The Mouse. Agree, agree, agree. I love mine. That little VG-10 blade is razor sharp and the handle size and shape is nice. The bad news is I don't really like Almite for handles in a daily carry. The knife is too pretty to chance scratching up! I'll buy another one if you make it in plain old checkered G-10. I would love to try field dressing a deer with one of those!

Gregg

Oh, one last thing. It still kills me that the G-10 version of the Harpy was discontinued. That is my number one carry knife to this day. There is very little it can't do on a daily basis. I open packages, cut string, use the long skinny tip to tease things out of confining spaces, etc. That one is a real loss to all of us. I wish I could go back to when Smoky Mountain had them on sale for $42 and buy at least a couple more. Actually I could have bought ten of them and slowly farmed them out as Christmas presents!

Hey Gregg. I too carry a Shabaria often...but? It seems that sales does influence this decision and I have learned that knives that the aficianado has reverence for is often overlooked by the general knife buying ELU.

Decisions won't be made public until the official notice comes out about the beginning of OCT.

What I will do is post the totals from both forums. But not until after the Blade show.

There is a large number in favor of retiring the Herbst it seems. I wonder if all in favor of nixxing this one have actually even seen one? I finally found one today at a local store and it is extremely nice. I bought it on the spot. I didn't have the funds to buy one the on the first release of this model and have been waiting anxiously for this new run. I guess my point is, it is great we are given a chance to express our opinions but I don't know how valuable or "real" they are. Although even if someone has not had the chance to examine and use the models they have selected, it reflects the consumers perception of the knives. Another recent purchase of mine was the Starmate and it would be a shame if this was let go. The 440V blade steel is really impressive. Life isn't fair and some knives that are great will be successful and other great models may disappear all to quickly due to limited availability or exposure, bad timing, etc. It is funny...the first time I saw Spyderco knives I surely did not understand the concept. Now I really appreciate and trust their products. Spyderco's wind up in my pocket far more than any other brands and I have given more of them as gifts than all others combined...Ed.
