This video was from the start of the purple Rough Ryder experiment. This is right after the first application of the dye.

This picture was after a few more applications of the purple dye.

So far this RR bone absorbs the dye very easily compared to the GEC’s that I have worked on. Also, this one absorbs the dye in a much more mottled pattern.

Sorry I missed this thread before asking dye questions in the orher thread.

Now that I know it’s not RIT, and it working with lacquer made me look at stewmac.com, a lutheir’s supplier. Both Mixol and ColorTone sound like they’d work. And I have some of those…
Also have a bottle of potassium permanganate. I think that might be a secret ingredient in Redbone??

We could have left this one alone, but I thought it looked slightly washed out. Wanted something that looked older. Before:

Here is an update on the H30 Jigged Frontier bone knife. I have worked on it some more with good results. I applied a mixture or black and brown dye in the valleys of the jigged bone. I have also dyed the entire bone handle with more Golden brown.

It took Nathan’s skills to get this knife to be truly orange. I could never get it to his level. Here is an earlier picture after I had tried dyeing it orange.

Another picture of the recently orange dyed Pemberton. I like when the sunlight hits it from the side and you can see how deep the dye goes into the bone.

This one was recently dyed by me. Previously, it had cream colored edges and a brownish top side. Now it’s more of a uniform reddish color on all sides.

I drove down to my brother-in-law’s house yesterday. We worked on this Blade Forums 91 large stockman, a carbon steel Case stockman, and my 39 Rendezvous knife while we watched the football games. All three knives are coming along nicely. The bone that GEC uses does have a fair amount of oil in it. That is a good thing, however, often it requires a little bit of heat to move that oil out so that the bone can absorb dye evenly. We are trying for a deep red color on the two stockman knives.

It takes time, but now we’re getting closer to what we want to see. We are not done yet. It may take a few more days to get this one just right.

That’s a nice improvement on the forum knife!
