Custom Dyed GEC’s by Nathan & Travis

I drove down to my brother-in-law’s house yesterday. He worked on this Blade Fourms large stockman and two other others while we watched the football games. It’s coming along nicely. The bone that GEC uses does have a fair amount of oil in it. That is a good thing, however, often it requires a little bit of heat to kind of move that oil out so that the bone can absorb evenly. We are trying for a deep red color.

It takes time, but now we’re getting closer to what we want to see. We are not done yet. It may take a few more days to get this one just right.
Looks good!
Can you post some pictures of how the Case stockman turned out?
I have one that I'm thinking about dyeing, but I'm not quite sure yet. Also, what dye are you using?

Thanks!

We worked on the 2024 Blade Forums Stockman knife again this weekend. Here is the finished knife.

And we also finished by the Case stockman.
Sorry for quality of my pictures today. I generally use bright, but overcast outdoor lighting to get good pictures. However, right now it is very sunny with snow on rhe ground which makes it impossible to take a decent picture.

I thought the picture posted earlier didn't really show the true color of the purple giraffe bone 39. It looked too electric blue compared to how it looks in real life. I think this video shows the color a little better.

My elderberry possum skinner is a bit light in the corners, I might have to get some Rough Ryders to practice on and then see about giving it a "fresh coat."

Super informative thread with tons of impressive transformations, I never figured RIT would be worth the trouble but didn't know what would be better

You should definitely go for it. It is very rewarding and satisfying to get the color just right.

RIT dye works well. I would have no problems using it on a stainless steel knife or a very used user carbon steel knife. I just can’t take the chance on a new knofe that the corrosive effects would start pitting the carbon blades & back springs of most GEC’s. Our method of using StewMac dyes and lacquer thinner as a base is much safer.
