Custom Knives, A Crap Shoot?

I'm fairly new to the custom knives scene, but so far, I have experienced no problems. My first two customs knives were from Shane Sibert. I bought them at TAD Gear, so I was able to hold them and get to know them first. I absolutely love them. I also plan on using the heck out of them when I can. That's what they are made for. I also own several Strider fixed and folding blades. Love them too. The thing that I like most about my customs, is that each one has its makers sweat and effort built in with it. To me that is more special than a production. I still have some production knives, but they haven't let my sock drawer in quite some time. ;)

I have to say thanks to both Mr. Sibert and the guys at Strider for what I think are tools well worth the cost. Opinions may vary though.:p

The only opinion that matters when it comes to whether a knife is worth the price is the opinion of the person purchasing the knife.

I would like to update that the knifemaker with whom I had experienced some communications has returned my knife in great shape. It now has no blade play and the lockup is secure. My threat to go public about the problems may have qucked my results but generally speaking, I still would only publicly mention a name once it became clear that the maker woould not satisfy me any other way.

The custom knives I own are all fixed blades - some I had made to my specifications - some were all ready crafted. I've dealt with a total of 7 different knifemakers (each one at least twice) and their craftsmanship has always exceeded my expectations. Our comunication has always been great and I don't impose any kind of deadline on the craftsman. I remember building models as a kid... better to take your time & walk away when something just didn't go right than 'rush' & 'mess' it up! :( I'll have to see if this philosophy holds up with 2 folders I'm having made; after reading these posts, I can only hope so! :D
Just to echo what Dave_B had posted...I've dealt with Little Hen Knives a total of 5 times (just e-mailed Ron for a possible 6th & 7th knife project) & have never felt like it was a crap shoot! That goes for the other knifemakers I've dealt with, too!

I must be very fortunate. I've owned many custom folders and honestly can't remember one I wasn't happy with. In fact the small, medium, and large Apogee's I just purchased from a fellow forumite = are so perfect that I can't quite playing with them.
