I thought it was quite a coincidence someone brought this thread back to the front page today.
I just today returned from a solo canoe trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and had a few pictures I wanted to share.
When you're in an area of 1700 square miles of wilderness, like this:

You at least need these:

Gary - the "model" is Merlin. And she's "Andersen Forge Built" :D
Completely made from raw materials - 100% sole authorship. (Except for fiberglass, epoxy, etc. You know - no "kit" stuff.)
I did it myself over a three month period for my 60th birthday present last year. I used it a lot for fishing, but this was my first trip.

Great work Karl. I know it's gratifying to totally rely on your own creations and day to day skills to not just survive but thrive.

that is one beauty of a canoe, Karl!

Rick that is a great filet knife. I really like that AEB-L too. What I used on those leather roundknives at the top of the page. @63 RC the edges really polished up and will cut leather all day and tomorrow and tomorrows tomorrow. Good stuff. Hold on to those pics of your girl. They might come in handy. Reminded me of this deal:

My daughter fixing the ropes on this bull calf at one of our brandings. She was about 14 at the time. We're holding it down horseback with the ropes so the groundcrew can finish processing this calf. She then starts castrating this calf, ( I can tell this is her as most of the cowboys on our ranch don't use red fingernail polish).

Then giving the calf its shots (different calf in this pic).

Here's why ya want to hold onto those pics. So about a month later she gets asked out on her first real date, a formal at school. So the wife and I are standing in the foyer of the house with the young man when he came to pick her up. My daughter is doing her hair one more time, you know the deal. So the wife had printed out these series of pics and hands them to the young man: "Do you know what she is doing here?" the wife asks. "Looks like she's......castrating something," he replies. "Yep, you remember that have her home by 11:30". And he did. Hold onto them pics.
