BIGFATTYT......I'm not JUST smart, I have bandwidth......ignoring me can be your choice, but it doesn't mean that I am wrong.
A 3.5 lb folder is just..........pointless.....it will pull your pants down if you carry it. It will do nothing better, and everything not as well.
People want many things, and many of those things are pointless, and frankly, are pathetic if realized......many times, flying your "freak flag" is a marker for not being taken seriously.
Best Regards,
STeven Garsson
Nothing pathetic about a huge, impractical folder if a huge impractical folder floats your boat.
The OP said, specifically, that the knife is not for carrying or using. He is not going to try to open the sucker up camping and start batoning wood, or trying to make fuzz sticks or building survival shelters.
He also does not think it will make him a ninja, or able to survive the zombie Apocalypse.
Steven, I don't ignore you. Pointedly so, I have chosen not to ignore you, because I often learn valuable information from your posts. I am constantly surprised by your inability to say something as simple as "not my taste" or "impractical, but interesting, thanks for sharing"
Instead you call a newish member, showing a picture of a custom built folder a "freak". You also call his design "pathetic" and "pointless".
It is a shockingly rude and narrow minded thing to say. You don't like it. That's fine.
I would not commission it, or carry it. But it made me smile. I can imagine that it made the knife maker smile as well (he was likely able to charge much more than one of his regular sized folders, pay some bills, and deliver exactly what the customer asked for). This project may, very well, have allowed the maker to make something else he wanted to make, instead of something he had to make.
Are these swords pathetic because some one realized them?
This one is 12 feet tall, and weighs 30 lbs. It, allegedly, was forged as a traditional sword. It is not practical. It is, most assuredly, a wall hanger, in the true sense of the word. But it made me smile. I can imagine the smile on the creators face when it all came together. Surviving forging, quenching, and the final polish showing the hamon turned out great. I would bet the patron it was made for smiled. He likely displayed it with pride. It may have been made simply to donate to a shrine as an offering, or to gain prestige. I'm sure more than one person at the time muttered behind their hand what a waste of resources or work it was.
(Not sure how to credit these photos, they were taken from a sword/armor forum. But I had seen them elsewhere before)
To suggest that the OP should not have posted it? Or, that by posting it, he runs the risk of not being taken seriously......by you?
I have no trouble taking him "serious". He did not post this as a "serious" knife. He stated it was a collection piece. Something to be displayed, and not used. That has it's own merit in my mind, even if it is not something I would do, or own.
Steven, having "bandwidth" does not make you less rude here. You are not wrong, because there is no "right" in this situation. The OP is not wrong because he did not check with the almighty Steven, before designing an impractical display piece. He should not be chased away because Steven thinks his knife is pathetic, no matter how much "bandwidth" Steven has. He likely could have bought any number of entry level folders from top makers at the price he paid for his first custom. This guy is not a maker looking for feed back, or trying to sell a knife. He is also not pretending he just designed and had built the most practical wizbang folder ever.
Rude is rude, no matter how smart you are, how much you know about knives, or how much bandwidth you have.
