Custom made folder with a 0.5" thick blade.

Nice knife! Crazy but dig it! I'm imagining what a deep hollow grind would look like lol. Think if I went with a no nonsense crazy custom just for conversation I'd do a wild grind although it could possibly take away from it actually resembling a folding knife. I respect the maker of this one, as I'd imagine losing the the folder look would be quite easy.

You mean losing the look? Yeah, that was a concern of mine too with such a large folder -- maintaining the proportions of a folder, especially with such a wide, thick blade. I assume that it's something that could easily get lost on a folder design as you make it larger. Like, instead of looking like a folder, it could look like a sharp piece of steel attached to a block of titanium, or a blade that happens to fold, as opposed to supposed to fold, if you know what I mean?

For example, I think that Cold Steel's XL Espada looks a bit off (In terms of proportions. I really like the knife itself.), especially the one in G-10, and most of the other XL's in Cold Steels lineup looks more "correct". While the blade looks to be correctly scaled up on the XL Espada, if a bit thin (I think it should be a bit wider.) the handle does not -- it simply looks like they elongated it without widening it. But, I suppose that's one of the problems with scaling folders up -- you can make the handles very long, but not very wide, at least not on a folder that's supposed to be comfortable to use like the Espada.

So, yeah, I think Anthony Griffin did an excellent job with maintaining the proportions.

Only thing I can see being cooler on this would have been a custom bearing system for the pivot, so that it COULD be flicked open.

...probably with enough kinetic energy to have it leap out of your hand and bury the tip of it into your foot, but hey! What the hell. It's a bigass, goofy folder!

Congrats, if that's what tickles your fancy, man. Enjoy life!

I think if we are being honest here, most of us are guilty of buying impractical knives. Sure, I EDC an expensive folder most days, but the most I end up cutting with one is a package or two. On the days when I know I am going to need to do more knife work, I carry a cheap, $15 Chinese folder. I think the overbuilt designs can be cool. They are also no more impractical than spending 2k on a custom knife because of the artistry that goes into making it.

I tend to separate and don't consider the financial value among the meanings a work of art delivers, but i cannot overlook the form follow function mantra when a tool is involved.
That is why i don't understand the popularity of overbuilt knives with edge geometries more appropriate for hatchets or lathe tools

My first response is "that knife is ridiculous." My second response is "that knife is awesome, I want one."

Ooo I love the look of this! Totally impractical but totally fun to own for bubbles and giggles!

On side note: I wonder how much spring will it take to turn it into a Kershaw Speedsafe flipper knife. :p

Glad this thread got necro'd because I'll chime in that as crazy as this thing is, I agree that it's awesome.

Is a Bugatti Veyron practical? HAHAHA, please allow me to laugh even harder!

Is a Bugatti Veyron fun? Oh, hell yes it is.

It does't matter if other people don't like it.

I don't think the Bugatti similitude would be appropriate.
The Bugatti is a concentrate of technology, and yes, it fits very well its purpose of extreme performances regarding speed on the road.
Analogy with a monster truck is probably more in line ;)
