Custom Order 6 Months Late...Need Advice

Above I added ***********'s name back in. If my name is posted in all this I strongly feel his should remain also. My name and my bad circumstances have been drug through the mud over this in which I already had intentions of mailing out a refund the next day. Then I get on here and read all this. Like I said, I have never stolen anyone's money or stuck anyone. It may take me a short while to return a deposit but it will always be refunded if asked. I have been in this business for a long time and have fallen on some seriously diffucult times with my daughter and then following that a painful back injury. I don't expect anyone to feel sorry for me but that is just how it is right now. I will work through this, but it has created a scenerio where I am very behind. It is easy to sit in judgement when you don't see the whole picture.
To all who have posted, I sincerely appeciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue. Had a friend not informed me that I was being spoken of on this forum yesterday, I would never have truly known these feelings.
Sincerely,
blue dog

Name & address removed by request. I'm glad to see this has all worked out. -Cougar

Removed for the second time. Want to see if I'm willing to go on re-editing all night?

What's the problem now??? I thought you were refunding enoreeriver's money and everything was all settled.

Enoreeriver prefers not to have his name and address posted so burglars can see where to go steal a nice knife collection. Whether that fear really makes a lot of sense or not doesn't matter; a lot of people on the net feel that way and they're entitled to that if that's what they choose.

I'm not going to go on re-editing all night. I'd really hate to have to ban you especially when everything seems to be all resolved with your reputation still intact, but I have better things to do with my life than to go on re-editing and re-editing....

Sorry about that. I meant no harm. I simply thought that it was only fair. If you could, please remove my name from this forum. I also have a large inventory and collection that I fear could be stolen also. I was not aware that he requested his name be removed for such a reason. I had never thought about it like that and please accept my sincere appologies. I was not aware of the rules and regulations of this forum.
Sincerely,
blue dog

Ed, it is doubtful that your name will be removed from this forum. You are a knifemaker and your knives are likely to be discussed just like any other maker out there.

That's crap and everybody knows it. Newt tried the same thing a year or two ago, it's just retaliation for a customer making a justified complaint about shoddy service. You may not give a damn about these forums but the smart makers know what side their bread is buttered on.

Update:
The knives have been returned for over 30 days now and I have only received a partial refund. I am still owed $300. I do not understand why I have not been paid in full. He has already publicly admitted that he has sold the knives to someone else. That $1200 should have been used to pay me back in full. This is absolutely unacceptable.

Damn right!

Amazing--the guy has a color spread in the March 2006 issue of Blade--along with his address and phone number and he is complaining about having his contact info posted on the internet. With all he has going on with CRKT--talked about in the issue of Blade--$1200 should be a drop in the bucket for this guy.

WHAT A TURD!

Weatherby, thanks for your thoughts. He actually, he owed me $900 to start with, so that would have been even easier. I referred to $1200 because I am pretty sure he got at least that much for selling the Snap Lock and Snap Fire. I have received $600 from him and no commitment has been made about when I will get the remaining $300.
I hate that my first custom knife purchase has turned into this ,and I hate that it has had to end up with hard feelings.

I've really only delt with Gene Ingram. He makes a hell of a custom knife for the price.

Why some of these guys need a deposit and can't be bothered to contact you--when they don't have a problem selling their customs--makes you wonder.

Currently I've been trying to contact a noted knifemaker who doesn't to respond back to me. Several years ago after winning an ABS award he told me he had a three year wait for a knife and was putting me on his "list." Well almost two and a half years later he is too busy competing in knife cutting comps to even bother with replying to me. Two other "famous" knife makers also with grand web sites can't even bother to respond. Kind of silly have these grand web sites but can't bother to respond to email to them!

This is only a guess, but I think the $300.00 is being withheld as a punishment for posting this thread. Anyway you look at it though, what Ed VanHoy is doing is pretty damn disgusting.

Keith, you may be right. Personally, I can't imagine risking getting kicked out of the Guild for $300 and the opportunity to hold someone else's money just a little bit longer.

Just and Update....

Ed Van Hoy has now had the knives back for 42 days and still has not refunded $300 of my money. I would think that the Blade Magazine article generated some orders for which I am sure he took a 50% deposit. Between that and selling the knives I had ordered, he has no excuse for not having the money to pay me back in full as he has promised to do.

I appreciate the update.

Maybe you could write CRKT and ask that they send $300 of a royalty check to you.

One thing is for sure, I would never consider ordering a knife from Ed VanHoy after the way he has handled this situation.

I think the lack of communication might almost be the biggest issue here. It reminds me of when I walk into a crowded restaurant and sit down. If someone comes over immediately and tells me they're really busy and that someone will look after us as soon as possible - I'm good for at least 10 minutes without even thinking about it. However, if I see waiters walking by or talking to each other without even a glance in our direction, I lose my patience pretty quickly.

Concerning deposits: in the past few years I have been asked by at least half a dozen well-known makers for deposits on custom orders from their regular offerings, nothing fancy. Personally, I don't have a problem with that. Of course there were other *name* custom makers where I offered a deposit (or payment in full, up front) and was politely refused.

When there are so MANY talented, communicative custom makers out there, it's a shame that someone's first custom knife order experience has turned so sour.

I just found out about this post and haven't had time to read the forums for a while. Mr. VanHoy is not replying to my brother who ordered the number 10 SnapFire and SnapLock maybe around 6 months ago...he was sent a $650 deposit. Delivery time was 6-12 months so they are not late yet, but I just do not think it is right for a maker to not even reply to customers, especially ones that have orders in, and deposits. I remember back when my brother placed the order...I told him not to give Ed more than a 25% deposit, but Ed said he requires a 50% deposit on orders, and always has...my brother really liked the knives, so he still placed the order.

I have allot of custom knives from many different makers, and one has never ignored me like that. I hope Ed emails his customers back from now on, so they at least know what is going on with their orders. The SnapFire and SnapLock are cool knives, and I hope my brother eventually gets his since he thinks they are sweet, and there aren't many knives that he likes.
