I've been recently bit by the custom slipjoint bug. I have a few on order at the moment, but I'm already daydreaming about the next order I place. I can see that this is going to be an expensive bout of knife-itis, and there is a very good chance that it's going to get worse as time goes by. The three knives I have on order are with highly regarded up-and-coming makers, but eventually I would love to get something by the biggest name of them all, Tony Bose.

Who are some others I should consider? Who are the makers to keep an eye on, and who are the big dogs in the slipjoint world?

I still can't keep my eyes off Todd Davison's knives. Plus he's a frequent poster on the forums so getting in contact with him would be easy enough. Hope to see some more custom slips as this thread progresses

Who do you have on order?

Roger

I have on order a Kerry Hampton Khnutbuster, a Rick Menefee clip-point trapper, and a Bret Dowell swayback. Three different blade types, three different handle materials, and three different blade steels. I'm trying to get a good variety of slippies.

A few I have had experience with. - I consider Bill Ruple and Joel Chamblin big dogs in the slip joint world. Ken Erickson just gets better and better. PJ Tomes makes a nice knife, so does Jerry Halfrich. Ray Cover is an old timer that makes fine slip joints. There are many others. If you have indeed been bitten then you are doomed. :D

Only custom slipjoint I ever owned was from Hiroaki Ohta. His work is outstanding and still pretty reasonably priced. I had chance to handle a Mike Alsdorf single blade a little while back and it was very nice.

I have 2 Mike Alsdorf's & a Bill Vining. BOTH are superb makers.

Both of those Alsdorfs look well made. Have to admit might be the lighting but the second one is too shiny for my taste.

A bunch of guys whose knives I really like in the 250 - 500 ish range:

Mike Alsdorf
Ken Erickson
Ken Coats
Hiroaki Ohta
Todd Davison

Roger

PS - the knife below is my EDC.

This is my EDC. Why get a Bose when you can own a Don Hanson? :) I think they are just as pretty and more.

Clifton Polk
Bill Ruple
Tony Bose
Ken Coats
Ken Erickson
Mike Alsdorf
T.A. Davison
Wes Davis

I've learned alot form just looking at the knives made by these makers. Their lines are all A+ and their finish is flawless.

All great suggestions so far.
Here are a few "sleepers"....
Joe Allen,JB Moore,John Howser

Ken Ericksons knives are really great !

Jerry Halfrich makes a great knife!

And a big timer that should not be left out,Eugene Shadley

Tony Bose knives, the best, are hard to obtain unless you got a fat wallet, these days.

But,IMHO,Reese Bose, well, get on his list & wait it out,'cause as far as any maker taking orders,he is one of ,if not,the best. Also,Reese' hand dyed & jigged bone is second to none, the best!!

Only custom slippy I own is a Ken Erickson , and indeed he has arrived and is what I would consider a big dog. I usually buy 3 or so customs a year , since getting the Erickson , I haven't really had to the urge to buy another...

I would someday love to score a Kerry Hampton Knuttbuster to accompany my Erickson for daily use.

Thanks Jon, but anybody interested in slipjoints has got to have a Tony Bose.

I got one :D

PS, that's a killer photo of that knife!!!!

A few more to consider: Mike Zscherny, Don Morrow and Rick Browne.

I'm getting a really nice sodbuster from Keith Johnson.

I have made over 450 of these knives now.
And I must say, they are not an easy knife to make.
Tony Bose - to me any way, will all ways be the king of slip-joints. He's the man.
Just like Bob Loveless will be king of what he has made and done.
And you really could not go wrong? If ya ask me? About any name mentioned here?

From..... Tony - good luck -
To Reese - if you get it now.
And from Mike Alsdorf - to Mike Zscherny......
There are some of the BEST slip-joint knives being made in this time we are in.

They just work.

I'm very glad to see the interest in the knives.
That all of these guy's mentioned here work so very hard to make for you all.

Thank you all!!! -
