The problem with the people Blade Mag says to contact is that I would be contacting the people that don't even represent me in Ohio. They want me to contact the person that represents Columbus.

So be careful who you send your letters/emails to as they don't have to even read them if they don't represent you.

Also,

Don't forget to email customs@kniferights.org when you have sent postal mail and/or email or both to let KnifeRight.org know you've sent stuff.

:)

Dear Steven:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns with efforts and policies to restrict the owning and handling of pocket knives. It is good to hear from you.

Like you, I am concerned with any proposal that would limit the ability of responsible Americans to purchase and possess knives to be used in a safe and legal way and I am committed to the protection of our rights and liberties as law abiding citizens. I fully support the mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection to keep our nation safe and secure our border. I do not understand, however, how policies that place broad restrictions on, or outlaw outright, pocket knives serves this purpose.

As you know, U.S. Customs has proposed revoking existing rules that distinguish switchblades from assisted-opening knives. Changing these rules could criminalize many individuals in the sporting knife industry and other individuals who own and collect pocket knives. Please be assured that I will keep your specific thoughts in mind as we continue to discuss this important issue.

Thank you again for contacting me. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely,

Duncan Hunter
Member of Congress

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Notice also that Duncan Hunter uses the term "pocket knives" rather than "switchblades" when discussing what will be restricted. Yeah, he gets it.

This is exactly what I am talking about.
These people follow. They do not lead.
This letter says Ill do what the others do to me?
It is to appease us.
If you want to have your knives, you better send your letters and scream or you will lose your knives.

I do not trust these people as far as I can throw them.
Read this:

"It is important to note that the CBP’s proposal relates to the importation of assisted-opening knives and would not ban the private ownership or use of such knives."
DO YOU BELIEVE THIS???? I DONT!

This says to me that we already know what your thinking and that is our next step. We will use this to smooth this one over and come back for this part later.

Did you notice NOREPLY in the email address?

Dear Mr. Ralph:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Department of Homeland Security’s proposed regulation changes regarding switchblade knives.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Rules and Regulations has proposed to revise the rules regarding admissibility of certain switchblade knives into the United States. Under the Switchblade Knife Act of 1958, anyone who knowingly introduces, distributes, or transports any switchblade knife as defined by this law is liable to fine or imprisonment. Previously, CBP determined that certain knives with spring - assisted or release-assisted opening mechanisms were admissible. After recent reconsideration and re-examination of several knives at issue, the CBP determined that knives incorporating these mechanisms should be prohibited from entry in the United States. It is important to note that the CBP’s proposal relates to the importation of assisted-opening knives and would not ban the private ownership or use of such knives.
I understand your concern regarding the classification of certain knives for utilitarian purposes. The CBP proposal is open for comments until June 21, 2009. I will monitor the situation and should any legislation regarding this regulation come before the Senate, I will certainly keep your views in mind.
Thank you again for writing me.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

In your letters, please mention to your Congressional delegation that Customs....an Executive agency, is usurping Congress's authority by their rule. Congress didn't vote on a change in the definition of "switchblade". Rather, the Executive branch has taken it upon itself to legislate....a power not granted it by the Constitution. That cannot sit well with Congress.

Well, I'll say this: It seems to me the 2nd Amendment covers ordinary pocket knives, but as far as I know there is no knife organization like the NRA. That's why we find ourselves without much horsepower.

Looks like a typical lip service reply to me. If you think it's a good reply then the staffer who sent it did his job.

OTOH, the email I just received from my congressman reads:Non-committal, but at least it seems he understands that the revision does nothing to further the mission of CBP and could criminalize many otherwise law-abiding individuals.

That part (to me) shows that your Rep. knows what he is talking about.
Hopefully we'll see more letters like this received.

But that's just it. If knives are classified as "weapons" (arms) the 2nd amendment gives us a the right to own and carry them.
I believe the NRA will be a big help to this debacle.

I have been an NRA member for a long time and it seems to me that their focus is "guns". I certainly hope they will enter this matter in a big way. If anyone reading this can find out how strongly the NRA intends to act, please share. Thanks

The responses you are seeing are generic and intended to let you know that they have your message and that they have not heard from enough of your friends to lean toward your side, therefore they are supportive of TDHS and the folks that work there.

This means that you must get your family members and neighbors to call the offices of all three of your reps and you must follow up your letter or email with a phone call and if possible with a face to face meeting. You must convince them that this is important to yoiu.

The NRA-ILA is, as they say, ON IT! I do not know exactly what they are doing, I assume the same as the AKTI, briefing lawyers and hireing lobbyists.

I have talked to folks at the NRA including Wayne LaPiere and they will be working with all of the people in Congress that they depend on.

Thanks AG. If the NRA is in our corner, things are looking up. However, each of us must still do our part. PLEASE write those emails/letters!
