Damascus Rings and Wooden Rings

Sorry, I personally don't do any engraving.

I don't have the time nor equipment to do any of that right now. Someday perhaps, but we're talking years down the road.

You could send the ring to an engraver and have it engraved on your own accord however, or I suppose I could look into what it would cost to have it done, but those are the only options at this point in time for engraving.

since damascus rust easy wouldnt it start to rust on ur finger due to the moisture under the ring.

IMHO, the nickle-bearing 15N20 won't oxidize and the carbon-steel 1095 will only get darker with age....a nice patina will ensue, at least that's what I expect. ;)

Kidvicious1026,

You are correct in that carbon steels will oxidize and potentially rust. As Dawkind mentioned, 15N20 is a nickel alloy which is resistant to oxidation (not quite stainless, but definately stain resistant). Additionally these rings are hot nitre blued, which helps to protect them from rusting. However, in my initial tests with the rings, while the blued rings don't really rust, your skin can start to absorb some of the iron from the steel and form faint brown/black rings around your fingers (this often varries from person to person, depending on your body chemistry. I had no problems with this, while others did). A simple correction to this is just some simple maintaince with some wax (either Renniassance wax, or an automotive wax like caranuba) once every few months (depending on how often the ring is worn) is enough to prevent this.

However, I didn't really like the idea of the need for periodic maintainance on the rings, so I'm actually going to start powder coating them with a clear powder coat. The powder coat is pretty tough stuff and should hopefully hold up well (I've ordered a really good quality powder with high wear and scratch resistance). This will be implimented on the next run of rings, assuming I get good results on my test piece ;).

And, while I'm here, guess I'll announce that I've finally gotten the next two billets done for the next run of rings. This time I threw in some pure nickel, mild, 1095, and 15N20, and bumped the layer count up to 25. Still a twist pattern like before. Hopefully this should give some decent results and throw in some more contrast and interest into the rings :) . I will start turning out the rings for those on my wait list this comming weekend. I'll be contacting everyone on the waitlist soon, so keep an eye out. I've got about 20 people on the list right now. That will probably wipe out this run. If there is extra billet left, I'll let you folks know and let it be first come first serve. I might try to knock out another billet in the next week or so to accomodate more orders and maybe keep some billet on hand, but we'll see how that goes. I might also experiment with some more advanced patterning techniques, but that depends on how long it takes to get caught up with these current ring orders.

Thanks,

Graham

Can't wait me and Momma are both excited.

Great!

I sent an email your way.

Same goes for the other folks on the first half of the list. If you are on the list and havent heard from me yet, I'll be in touch in a couple days once I get some of the orders from the first half of the list dealt with. I'll let everyone know in a post here when I have sent messages out to everyone on my list, at that point in time, if you havent heard from me, please let me know in case I missed you.

Also, if you are on the wait list, if you can start to get your ring sizes and style considerations in order, I'll be able to move down the list much quicker with less wait time.

Also, I'll post some pictures of rings from this run in the next day or so. So far I just have my "test" ring done that I did to practice the powder coating with, but should have another couple done shortly and pictures of them all.

And one final note, due to the addition of the clear powder coat, and pure nickel in the billet, this run will go for a bit more than the first. $110 a piece. Though remember that clear powder coat makes the rings maintaince free, so no worries about rust or oxidation at all anymore.

Thanks folks.

thanks for the heads up.
It looks like I won/t be able to get sized until the weekend.
There is not enough time in the day with the little one running around.

Momma's and my rings came in today. These things are beautifull. I will try to post a pic tomorrow. The deep etch is sweet. Perfect fit!
Thanks Graham

Sounds good Chainring, and thanks for the reminder about the pictures I said I would post. Life has been hectic and that makes it hard to remember to update threads sometimes.

Here are a couple rings from this run:

Also, the $135 price I posted previously for this run is not correct. After working with the powder coat a bit and recalculating some things with time and cost I've determined that the $135 was too much and I have been selling the rings from this run for $110.

Thanks.

These are all rings which were done previously for customers. I hand make each ring for each customer since there are a wide variety of finger sizes out there and I'd be holding onto rings for a while trying to find the right customer with the right finger size for a particular ring. So its just easier to custom make each ring, that way I can make sure the customer gets exactly what they want in terms of style and that things fit perfectly.

I can do pretty much any size that is needed, half sizes, even quarter sizes if necessary. Extremely large rings will cost a bit more (I can usually get up to a size 13 out of a billet, and thats pretty big. Anything over that exceeds my size chart and would require custom billets hence a higher price).

Thanks,

Graham

have not been able to post pics but Graham's rings are beautifull! I have been wearing mine constantly ( I take it off when grinding, machining or welding) but other than that it is a part of me. there have been no problems at all.
And did I say they are gorgeous?,,,,, they are!

Dude--I'm not in the market for one right now...but what about polished micarta rings? Those would be SICK! :D You do great work--keep it up!

My wife does not pay too much attention to my knives (lucky me) but she does pay attention to beautiful things and these rings are things of beauty! I have been looking at them since the OP and admire them tremendously.
If more (2) damascus become available we would love to be put on the list.

Thanks for the interest folks.

Life has turned mighty hectic for me here recently (new job, living away from my shop, upcomming knife show) so I've been forced to re-prioritize a bit. I've had to discontinue accepting orders on rings (or anything for that matter) so that I can devote what very little shop time I get to preparing for the PKA knife show in August.

My ring order waitlist kind of went all to pot. I contacted the majority of people on the list with very few responding. Those that responded should all have been taken care of when I did the last ring order run, but as for the rest of the list it has made orginization very difficult. So I've done away with waitlists for rings for now. Any recent inquiries have been postponed until after the show is done.

So for the time being no more ring orders. Once the show is over and life has hopefully slowed down a little, I'll open ring orders up again, but on a bit of a smaller scale (in terms of wait lists and such).

Thanks everyone.
