Kidvicious1026,
You are correct in that carbon steels will oxidize and potentially rust. As Dawkind mentioned, 15N20 is a nickel alloy which is resistant to oxidation (not quite stainless, but definately stain resistant). Additionally these rings are hot nitre blued, which helps to protect them from rusting. However, in my initial tests with the rings, while the blued rings don't really rust, your skin can start to absorb some of the iron from the steel and form faint brown/black rings around your fingers (this often varries from person to person, depending on your body chemistry. I had no problems with this, while others did). A simple correction to this is just some simple maintaince with some wax (either Renniassance wax, or an automotive wax like caranuba) once every few months (depending on how often the ring is worn) is enough to prevent this.
However, I didn't really like the idea of the need for periodic maintainance on the rings, so I'm actually going to start powder coating them with a clear powder coat. The powder coat is pretty tough stuff and should hopefully hold up well (I've ordered a really good quality powder with high wear and scratch resistance). This will be implimented on the next run of rings, assuming I get good results on my test piece

.
And, while I'm here, guess I'll announce that I've finally gotten the next two billets done for the next run of rings. This time I threw in some pure nickel, mild, 1095, and 15N20, and bumped the layer count up to 25. Still a twist pattern like before. Hopefully this should give some decent results and throw in some more contrast and interest into the rings

. I will start turning out the rings for those on my wait list this comming weekend. I'll be contacting everyone on the waitlist soon, so keep an eye out. I've got about 20 people on the list right now. That will probably wipe out this run. If there is extra billet left, I'll let you folks know and let it be first come first serve. I might try to knock out another billet in the next week or so to accomodate more orders and maybe keep some billet on hand, but we'll see how that goes. I might also experiment with some more advanced patterning techniques, but that depends on how long it takes to get caught up with these current ring orders.
Thanks,
Graham
