damn, broke my southard in 2

Even if they did, I'd be willing to bet that the blade in the Southard is no small portion of the cost of the knife.

If the OP thinks the fracture may have been caused by a flaw in the blade, then sending it to Spyderco for evaluation may be worth the postage to send it to them and the $5 check to defray return cost if they decide it was not and he wants it back. They don't replace blades or sell replacement blades but, if they feel it was a defect in materials, they would replace the knife. I doubt that's going to be the case, given the circumstances under which it snapped, but they are really the only ones whose opinion matters.

Hi Sharpestedge, RecreationalUser, Achilles,

Welcome to our forum.

Hi JayJay,

Got your IM, thanx. Off the top of my head, I would say that if you hit a boutique blade steel with a hammer or hatchet, it will probably break and the fault would be yours. As Deacon mentioned, you are welcome to send it in for a look/see, but I don't think we would cover the break.

Not sure what Mr Glessor is talking about I didn't do anything illegal....maybe he posted in the wrong thread?

Boo hoo, what do you want us to do about it? If you're one of those guys that likes to baton with their folders, you deserve to have your knife broken.

Hey. If you have nothing nice to say don't feel the need to come here. I can't say I fancy YOUR attitude. The OP has every right to express what happened and even just the value of seeing the cross section of his blade was worth the click for me.

I don't believe he asked us in general, or you in particular, to magically fix his knife. I think it was just an informative post, and an interesting one. He did not shirk responsibility for his actions.

If you must baton, use a piece of wood.
If you're batonning wood, there should be some wood around to use. :)

actually, such posts and experiences are good for all. you know what your folder can do and what it cant do. Or if there are defects or otherwise (just past the limitation of the folder). Heat treat etc.
