Daniel Fairly "borrowing"from another maker?

There are TONS of knives in Fairly's forum that mimic Horton designs unfortunately. To run around banning people or pretending that this isnt true is absurd.

Would Ford go ask Chevy for the Camaro design so they can borrow it? Absolutely not. That wouldnt fly in a million years. The same goes with Horton or anyone else.

I dont see people cloning Emerson CQC-6 knives as their own, because everyone knows it wouldnt fly!

id like to know why my comments were deleted. and its not just one design or maker sir
I have no idea what, who ,or why your comments were deleted. I just don't have the power. My guess is that they were in some way out of line. Go ask a Moderator, maybe you can get satisfaction from one of them. :)

The only 2 people that really have a dog in this fight is Horton and Fairly. It's not worth getting banned over, I'm out.

I in no way tried to rip off another makers design.

I just talked to Jeremy about this and will not be making any knives like it again.

Styles can develop on their own but Jeremy really owns his style. Mine was too close in retrospect. I'm a huge fan of his work and did not mean to do him wrong.

Jeremy, even though I talked to you I'd like to apologize to you here on Bladeforums. I have nothing but huge respect for you and your work.

Well that takes care of that. What are people still arguing about?

I've seen threads like this before.
If a slipjoint folder maker ,makes his version of a Schrade 292 pattern trapper,is he doing injustice ?

I always say,one way to look at it,is,if one maker wants to try to make renditions of another makers knife, well,IMO,that is like a compliment to the knifemaker & his design.

First of all, we don't delete anything here. If someone makes a comment, it's on them plain and simple. As for the person banned, well if you feel the desire to tell someone to go f*ck themselves via message, after receiving a well deserved language infraction then go for it. That will happen on any forum, don't believe me? Go try it and see how quickly you get nuked. Being an flaming idiot over something that has no impact on you is not a badge of honor, only children think this way (or those tht imporsonate adults).

Is there any comparison photos so folks like me can see if there are simply design similarities or there is an active use of another's artistic design.

My views are plain and simple.

There is always someone who has made a knife that looks like, or is made the same way as a knife that was made by someone else.

EVERY maker draws inspiration from others designs. Its just how it is.

Now both of these guys make a great knife so as long as neither one of them is upset, lets leave it at that.

I liked the rat 3 design so I printed a picture out to scale and made my own. I didn't sell mine but its the same principle. If a design works it just works.

So, since I "stole" some of Fairly's(Horton's) designs, what level of hell do I go to?

Don't worry Matt, I'll save a spot in line for you. :D

I just dont get why these low post count lurkers all of a sudden jump in and claim a crime against humanity has been comitted because two makers (or more) figured out how to grind a bar of steel the same way. Daniel has always mentioned his influences in his work, specific makers, designs, etc. He has never once ever tried to deceive or be shifty about his work. I own Daniels knives, he does good work, I have followed his work from day one, and continue to do so.

Agreed, Daniel has been and always will be a great guy in my book. He's a stand up guy who very kindly explained a lot about how he makes his knives to me when I was starting out. Heck, I first heard of "chisel grinds" and "'poon tips" over on his forum.

Seeing as him and Jeremy have apparently worked something out, it looks like there's nothing more to talk about; I just wanted to make my view of Daniel's character clear. If Mr. Horton does not want anyone else making these types of designs then I'll gladly stop as well.

I agree.

Its hard to find a maker thats not influenced by others in one way or another.

Ive talked to daniel..and we have discussed all the aspects of inspiration and such.. things happen... and its easy to get started down the wrong path.. when you are making what you like.. im sure we are on the same page now...

Thanks for posting Jeremy...it means a lot. The good news is you have a very recognizable style. :)
