Bad analogy. Knifeknuts are already under the scope, we're considered strange for having a knife hobby. The general perceoption is that knife people are all for violence and are dangerous. Most of us are utility knife users, and that's how responsible dealers sell them. That helps to maintain a true image. When DarkOPS come around and stirs up contraversy like this, with talk of the knives being made just for violence, it only serves to reinforce the public image of knifeknuts as being blood-thirsty. People will get the idea that knife designs like locks and grips are all meant for fighting, when in reality they are not.

And, lets not forget that aside from possible legal trouble if you use a Dork Op knife in self defense, because of the absurd ad type, all it takes is one ad like this in Blade, the most popular and mainstream knife mag, in the hands of a politician not sympathetic to our cause, looking to enact some feelgood legislation, this one ad alone could serve as effective evidence in a congressional committe and ultimately a vote on our gun and knife rights. They prohibited/restricted bayonet lugs in 94, and yet, i recall so few deaths that were caused by bayonet lugs running amok... And, I also dont recall Colt in Guns and Ammo prior to '94 having ads saying: "Our newest Ar-15 has a special bayo lug which features our latest Tri-Channel tm blood managment system, allowing 3 seperate drainage points so that damn muslim will bleed out in seconds, without ruining your tux for a night on the town..."

Honestly, it's like somebody bet someone they couldnt come out with a full page ad in Blade that would be the most intellectually offensive ad ever, and one that would also, if ever any ad could, assist those who would take our rights away. So, who wins the bet? Not us.

And, finally, is not anyone else insulted to think what the writer of that ad thinks of us, the knife buying public, how stupid, shallow and irresponsible we must be?

Brownie, I like you, but you are continuing to defend the indefensable. Another small piece of advice, this thread continues along, with new bashers periodically, because you keep defending them. And when somebody comes along and sees your latest defense of DOPS, they cant help but say, aloud over their keyboard: "Holy crap, open your eyes Brownie!", and then they proceed to explain, again, how you're defending somebody in error and recently stretching to do so. Nothing wrong with being loyal to a friend, or someone who has earned your respect and trust as Frank obviously did with you, but there comes a point where you have to see what's in front of you and admit somebody you admire goofed really badly to say the least, both from a functional and moral point of view.

Whew! It did take some time to read this thread. It does present some interesting questions ;) .

New Knife companies often hire advertising agencies to do their advertising. Even older companies have at times done the same. The problem seems to be that the advertsing agencies know little about the knife industry. They write the ads based on what worked for cereal or automobiles.

It seems that the knife industry is enough removed from mainstream hobbies that the same advertising strategies simply don't work.

The problem with the ad promotion in a nutshell, IMO, is newby ignorance, period! I think that is the easiest to understand.

On design copying, as a designer, I'll leave that one alone.

Ripping off ER's designs? All I see frank had in mind was to produce a knife at least as strong as the ER line, along the same lines with customer input as to what others would like to see in the way of design upgrades/features over the ER products. He certainly had enough requests and suggestions while handling the other line where he felt it warranted a new line based on a proven design but with upgraded features which appealed to the general buying public through those very suggestions.

Brownie, sorry to say that but you must be kidding... it's such a clear ER rip-off that I can't imagine going even closer...

Only problem I have is the advertising.. Could you IMAGINE if someone ever used one of those knives to kill someone or numerous people? Listen, Can you hear some Media blow hole, or politician beating his chest about a NEW menace to society while holding that ad up? Well I can, and its bad for the industry pure and simple..
These guys will be GONE in a blink, and the rest of us will have to live with it. We DO NOT want this brand of BS infecting the knife world, NO good can come of this...

Edited once again for $hit spelling

Take Care

And what from second end??? (no comment now about similarity or rip-off, quality of material and etc., its different thing) :::

From bussines side, new idea.
I can imagine, how aggresive and very problematic their ads are in USA, but who know, maybe its their (DarkOPS) strategic bussines plan, expand to another part of whole world.
Knife isnt machine gun and you can sale to where is interest. Of course, except lands like a England or few similar, but this cant kill my bussines ..

This thread, its discussion of knife experts, everyone know ALL knives-firms-designs-steels-etc.,etc., so this discussion is probably important for US BFC experts and customers, but not for another part of world- exactly say : for non-expert customers.

Hypotetical imagination:

Here is huge and hungry market, eastern europe, states from formerly soviet block have not knife laws (and what i know, they will not-to future)
Milions potentional customers, who want no tools, especially between younger peoples!, because word TOOL-it sound not so interesting, like a word WEAPON, ASSAULT, MILITARY,SEAL, DELTA,KILL,STAB,BLOOD and etc., and exactly all infos in their aggresive advertisiments.
Its very smart advertisement. Not for US market, of course!

I can imagine, if they will start distribute their products (if will produced) to here, to eastern europe, to south america, to africa and i dont know to where ..
USA? This is not so interesting market for us...
We need not sale our knives to SEAL, they probably will not in interest, we need (from bussines reason) declare!, that our product are used by US Special Forces etc., etc.
...damn, go go and find fast someone from Special Forces for our ads!

Its important, because our (of course, younger) customers, read: non US customers, they want listen words like a WEAPON, no word TOOL.

I need following thing: aggresive ads, stamped Made in USA-its very important! from bussines reason (who care about some steel...if its S30V, or NHSGSFWET587/.-2, its made in USA from hydronautic aeronautic NHSGSFWET587/.-2 supersteel and treated under biohypertechnology - they know do it!
It expensive, BUT damn, look catalog!, it must be best of best! I want one!!

Who know about some ER rip-off? nobody
Who know about some steels? Damn, it must be some best Terminator steel, when they use it for these knives.
Who know about this discussion at BFC? nobody, who care...
EE, i heard that its copy of ER ? What is ER? Oh italiano? Hm, probably they copy from this great DarkOPS american company, its sure...Globally italian quality is known here(sorry members from Italy, but its so - clothing, shoes,cars-italiano design is really one from best, but quality is..okey, i will polite ..debatable :)
Who want super combat special forces cryogenicaly hydromatic rotate-o-matic bioturbomatic treated super knife? LOL, (say these younger customes, hungry buy something) it must be best of best!!

And dont forget, Mr.Frank must know something about this market, from his formerly ER job.
Its interesting too, that they do not communicate here, if i want start serious company at US market, (eee, but its hard) first -i will have interest get positive views and etc. - first from US experts and customers, no?
If i want do, what i wrote up, who care about some discussion here and etc., I need ads in some good US magazines, its important (i can show it in Bulgary or or or or ... that i have ads in serious US magazines) but i stay away from US market - they hate me, im ripp off producer, i have killer ads, etc....

I dont know, maybe im wrong, but what i have read here...its my opinion only..

But mostly funny is, that when i showed this catalog to peoples (without comment), every second say : loool, superb! i want one, can you provide one knife from this catalog for me??
"Nono, i cant...but it will not so cheap, around 300usd.."
"So yes, no problem, i understand, it must be expensive, what i see, its higher quality!"

You can say, that he is moron?? Maybe, but he is new customer of DarkOps ..!

OOOOKEY, its exactly what we planned! Say DarkOPS ...sitting on the heap of bucks ... "who care about US market ..send next few thousands knives to Bulgaria and Croatia .."
Interesting thing is too, that when i visited 3 shops, they have had this catalog there...
Im sorry for my english, but i hope, you understand what i try say ..

You think, thats sci-fi imagination? I dont think so.

Intersting post. I too ordered the catalog from dark ops...and was disgusted. I think that something tat everybody here at BF has in common is that we are knife heads. If you can afford a $330 knife, then you can afford the internet, thats plain and simple.

What is so bad about these knives is that they give knife collectors a scarlet letter. Unlike members in the military, and our former companion the warlock, most of us here carry our knives as a tool. We have no intent to use it as a weapon, but understand that it can be used in self defense.

Here in America (just incase you didn't know) there are people who try to blame problems in society on inatimate objects rahter than the people who cause them. The advertising of dark ops knives does validates in some twisted way the reasoning of gun and knife grabbers.

If certain law makers got their hands on this catalog, they would stand up at city council meetings and in statehouses declaring, "Look, right here. A knife is not a tool, it is a weapon! The knifemakers themselves claim it! Nobody should carry a knife becasue of my personal insecurities! Their knife is a weapon, and it hurts my feelings! Ban knives! Ban guns! These people are evil and just want to kill!"

DarkOps needs to take its advertising and the scars that it has left on all of the respectable knife owners and makers and pull its products, and even more than that its advertising. I encourage all of you to not buy their products, and make your opinions known to the world.

The worst part, this is all for money. In no way does Paul "The Shadow" Basal plan on helping any situation. From what I understand, he enver was a real SEAL. He is a disgrace to the special operations community in his attempts to shamelessly profit from someting he was never part of. And in his quest for money, he has pulled all of us down one step of the ladder.

OH MY GOD this is funny! I wish had joined up a while ago! DEANIMATION? Thats my new term for having to fire someone.

Bob

I just found this thread. Oh dear god....

Almost can't believe Dark Ops is real. :barf:

I noted that their website is copyright Pyramont North America - a marketing company and apparently a sleazy one, based on the site.

Talk of body fluid spray, absolutely meaningless hype ("Quartz impregnated inserts..."low-durometer, high tensile aramid composite")

And:
"Notch design allows prybar style mechanical advantage for entry through aluminum vehicle rooftops"
"sharp enough to smash through canopies"
"cutting away harnesses and overhead cables"

It seems that the only thing they are selling is pure, undiluted hype and BS.

I'm not sure if I should laugh or vomit.

Damn zombie thread! Anyway, On the DOK website there is a tactical flashlight called the "Hellfighter." I LOL'd.

That is such an awesome name, what do they retail at and I assume its Hydrogen powered, ya know Holy Water cells...

I wonder how the company is doing today. My dealer here offered some on his post in a local forum. Needless to say he pulled it.
