Well,
I was going to write a personal reply to those naysayers, in rebuttal to some comments made about DOK's, but instead decided to go this route.
I talked to Frank an hour ago. He is still in Atlanta. Frank told me that the knives shipped to the show for his booth had been stolen, as well, another well known makers prototypes were stolen from a shipment to the show where the box arrived empty as well.
It appears Frank is not the only victim here of the same crime, at the same show, though there is no indication the two are related that I'm aware of at this time. Having talked to Frank ocassionally over the last year, I was aware of the time and effort and commitment he has put into getting his new company up and running in a very short time span and being ready for blade this year to kick off the new knives.
It didn't happen as Frank had planned. He spent considerable money to be at Blade this year, to get the proto's designed, made, and ready for the show was no easy task in the few months he had to do so. The advertising which usually runs 6 month in advance in the rags would never have made the stands in time for Blade if he had not pushed hard to get them in there in time. I don't know how he got the time lead down to a few short months but at the very least it does show a commitment on his part to be ready for Blade with the new knives, whatever it took to do so.
I would hope no one would be so naieve as to think a man would spend the funds to accomplish all this in short order [ create a new knife company thats viable within a year ] which normally would take twice or three times that time frame normally.
Has the advertising worked? I think so from some of the comments here. Did they [ the ads ] not get you interested, even facisously [ spelling ? ]? They brought attention to the new line, perhaps outragiously aggressive in wording and content [ as I have not seen any of the ads spoken of personally per se ], but they did draw the attention to people who had never heard of the knives in the ads as well as the people who frequent these and other boards relative knives.
My own understanding, which Imay have misenterpretted so take it with a grain of salt here, is that Franks line of knives will at least have some similiarity on their design, strength, and function with some in the line he was previously associated with as well as a whole new lineup.
If some are representative of the MPC and the Nemesis, etc and are upgraded from his understanding of the peoples wants in improvements over the previous line he was involed with, I can't wait to get my hands on one.
I carried the MPC for quite awhile as a secondary as I felt it was a folding prybar with an edge and would make an excellent rescue tool, survival folder with the glass breaker and strength of the knifes materials used. Unlike any other I have ever seen for strength IMO, especially with the secondary passive cross bolt engaged.
I want one like that from Franks line. I think I can appreciate the upgrades which were incorporated, in no small part, from peoples opinions/suggestions here and elsewhere. Frank monitored the lines knives and listened to his customers. Now he is out on his own, with a brand new company and line of knives.
If the knives are everything I expect they will be, or more so, I'm going to be very happy. Myself, Frank could advertise them with outrageously funny ads, total hyperbole of nonsense and BS, I won't care what the advertising says to catch the attention of the buying market to a new line of knives, I happily plunk down the money if the knife is as strong, well built, of quality materials as I believe they will be.
Will Frank have growing pains, anyone who doesn't believe he should is not a businessman or ever started a new company. If we look at other companies, well established for years, decades, we see they all have growing pains at times. Some with QC issues, others with their service dept's, etc etc. To think Frank will escape any of that, well, it would be unrealistic at best.
I did find out one of the knives in the lineup is gong to be a knife designed by a USNSeal over a year ago where frank was asked to execute the design and have input into the project. That indirectly led to Frank seeing his way clear to making a new start within the industry. A giant step for anyone, and lots of upstart monies needed. A committment on his part to take the risk of utter failure with the potential for great rewards.
Frank suffered at Blade, not by his own hand or design from his accounts to me, but by thieves, who also hit another vendor [ no I'm not going to mention the name, thats his business and not ours, though I know the man and will probably learn of it sooner or later when we speak next ].
All the ribbing about the ads, the outrageous claims of design features, etc. etc. He got you to look at the ads and you were anxious to see the new line at Blade. Some would have been to his table just because they have a repore with him from the last venture and line of knives, know Frank to be a man who stands behind someone elses product even when the company he represents will not do so to that measure, and think of him as forthright and honest. More importantly, even before he started his own line, he was committed to customer satisfaction, and that bodes well of for his new line as that reputation precedes him.
I wish him well in the arena of knives. Time will tell if the product is what it is purported to be. In the meantime, I'll be patient and wait to get my hands on one. I don't expect I'll be disappointed, and if I am, at least I'll have waited to physically handle one before I attempt to ridicule a man who took the giant step off the porch and decided to run with the big dogs.
Good luck Frank
