Daryl's Crossbow: A terrible SHTF weapon

Guys...this is a tv show...reaching for variety of characters and weaponry...all part of the intent to develop and maintain the persona of the cast.;)
I don't hear anyone trashing the babe carrying the sword around as her primary weapon.:D, so why pick on ol' Daryl..isn't there a law somewhere against weaponry discrimination in the actor's guild that we, as the free people of middle earth should respect? :D

Considering the fact that the enemy (walkers) don't used ranged weaponry, and are attracted to noise, i can't actually think of a more perfect weapon than a sword. No running out of ammo, no noise, easy to carry

Sounds right to me.

I am not a bow hunter but I was a competitive bow shooter as a teen and then some. The main problem that i had with a crossbow was that it was slow to draw. Follow up shots seemed like they may be a problem and just having the bow at the ready while walking or in a blind just seemed a little too risky to me.

I've got a crossbow set up with a crossbow scope. It IS in my opinion is a specialty weapon. Close range, surprisingly accurate once you get your scope zeroed. It isn't a weapon of choice to carry, but is very useful when quietness is needed, and you don't have the time to become proficient with a compound bow. I would actually like the butaniku in a zombie scenario, but honestly hordes of scavangers coming out of the neareast big city, looking for food and targets of opportunity would be my take on a more plausible scenario after an economic collapse. Then give me my lmt cqb or fn fal :)

I guess a compound bow is decant weapon but plain and simple I don't like them. Other peoples opinions will vary and I understand that but really for me and only me I would prefer a crossbow or recurve for a couple of reasons; First like many have said a crossbows main weakness is the reload time but that can be overcome buy a string crank making reloads only a couple seconds with practice. Second I have found that crossbow has much more range than a recurve (cant speak for compound as I have not owned one but have done small time competition and Most of the time on range and accuracy crossbow came out on top) and with easier to use sights and scary accuracy it does seem like a good option to me. As far as the recurve goes the rate of fir is much higher but not as long range or as accurate as a crossbow.

I like Darryl's character but is does frustrate me that he brings that crossbow to a gun fight. Hunting zombies or clearing out a building, it's good if paired with his knife for multiple close quarter zombies. But to bring it to a fight with ARs. That hurts my sensibility. Yes, I know it's just a show. Plus didn't someone mention the weight issue.

I could not think of a worse choice for a projectile weapon when you need to reload quickly

True. Which is why it was an army weapon. It wasn't meant for a lone warrior, it was effective when a group of crossbowmen alternated shooting and loading.

Agreed, I was pretty much just trying to be a dork in that post..but you're dead on.

Dude, it's the movies. Every prepper on them interwebs is in for a rude awakening if the scenarios they are preparing for actually happens.

as far as bows go... In this situation Id take an old recurve. Give me a Black widow;)

shoot fast and accurate.

Better than any elf you've ever seen:D

I doubt this one is getting any nominations.;)

I get the impression this guy isn't that good with a crossbow anyway, since apparently other people seem to use them effectively at farther ranges than he believes is reasonable. He says that crossbows aren't that quiet, then compares it to a 22lr (much quieter by the way) in terms of terminal energy and "killing energy???". I think this guy should go bear hunting with a 22lr.
