The precision fitment impresses even more in action than it does in photos - this thing locks up like a bank vault.
Exactly.

The fit of those two pins into the nut is so flippin' precise you HAVE to have it perfectly square and level to insert. Right then you 'get it'.

This piece, this thread, I believe, is a breakthrough to DW's future. Pay close attention. :)

I finally got some time to play with taking it apart and putting it back together. The precision fitment impresses even more in action than it does in photos - this thing locks up like a bank vault.

Roger

The engineering, the lines, the extreme beauty of the koa--WOW, what a tour-de-force. Beautiful, beautiful piece.

Congratulations Roger!

Fantastic work, David! Just amazing.

So glad you had Coop do a layout--really captures the incredible detail that went into this one on so many levels.

I was just getting ready to write to ask if you had a chance to disassemble and re-assemble the knife when notification of your post came through :D

I was really waiting for your thoughts on, not so much how everything fit together, as what it felt like when you tightened the finial nut down ;)
Like you said, she "locks up like a bank vault"

Thank you, Thank you & Thank you again ;)

Thank you again for everything you've done for me since getting this piece Coop

I'm working very hard to make your prediction become reality ;)

Thanks Will  :)

In regards to your statement about having Coop take pictures. Boy, what a numb-skull I've been for waiting so long to take advantage of his services

All I can say now is, if there are any other knifemakers out there who are on the fence about doing the same, I can't encourage you enough, .... "just do it"

In so many ways, you will not be disappointed

I've said it before and I'll say it again, right from the beginning, from the first sketch Roger and I shared to getting Coops pictures in the mail, this has been one heck of a ride

Thanks again to everyone :) ;)

Bump for a great knife and great WIP. I'm not sure how I never saw this thread before. I can only hope to be able create something like this one day

There was a lot of good stuff that happened during the time I was making this Knife.
Thanks for the bump reiko  How did you ever dig it back up ;)
I thought this thread was long gone.

I checked out your profile ...........

Biography: Contemplating trying to make some knives.

(In a Yoda like voice) Don't contemplate - Just do :D
After making knives for many years now, I can't even begin to imagine my life without it.
Every knifemaker had a "first knife". Once you get that one under your belt, you'll be on your way !

I don't know if you've checked out other areas of BladeForums but the Shop Talk - BladeSmith Questions and Answers Sub-Forum, here, specifically the yellow highlighted areas at the top, have all of the information, and more, that you'll need to get started.
That sub-forum is also the place to get answers to questions that will pop up as your knifemaking journey begins.

In regards to another area of your profile ...........

Interests: firearms, aquariums, motors

I can certainly dig the firearms interest

I think you'll fit right in here ;)

Thanks again Buddy

basically sums up my approach to life. Thanks Star Wars!

Anyway - here is the result of Coop's fine work:

I love this additional shot which really captures the lines of the piece:

Wonderful knife with stunning photos. Especially like the positioning of the knife in Coops second photo. Well done all the way around.

I agree - and I was happy he did two images. One communicates a lot of information about the knife and the precision takedown assembly, and does so in a captivating way. The other just lets the lines of the knife speak. Glad to have both.

I had missed this thread previously also? Turned out NOT to be such a bad thing as I was able to view the WIP start to finish.

All I can say is WOW!!! Great project and congrats to Roger on another fine addition to his collection, and EXCELLENT work David.

Thank you prairiedigital :)

No doubt about it, Coop did a fantastic job ! Roger sums it up perfectly

Also, if you haven't already taken a look at the youtube video Roger did, that's a dandy too ;)
The movement Roger adds really captures the chatoyance in the Damascus and the Koa Handle.

There's more than a couple cups of coffee in that read ;) Thanks for taking the time out to do that

It's always surprising when WE step out of our box, now and then, to find unexpected pleasing results.

Thanks to all.
