Day Packs

I'm looking for one exaclly like that... but with these cubic inches, they are more likelly to be a 3 day pack.
However I've skipped maxpedition packs, and looked more towards to camelback bfm or blackhawk titan.

Kifaru sounds great, but they are expensive...

Kifaru X-Ray is the best day pack I've every used. It's now the pack I take on EVERY trip I go on. On longer trips, I piggy-back it onto my Pointman pack. A big plus for me is that they're covered in Molle which makes it possible to attach any of a million different Molle capable attachments. Bottomline: They're expensive, but they're crazy comfortable it is literally the last day pack you'll have to buy.

I got a tad fast pack edc - pricey and probably not something I would get myself but it was a very nice gift. BUt with all that said its really a great pack - the only downside that I have found is with all the pals and molle attachments it looks pretty tactical. But I normally go hiking in remote areas so who cares.

How much stuff can you fit in your edc. I'm trying to decide between that and the bigger version.

I tried on a Kelty Redwing 3100 today at SportsmansWarehouse, it's now on my to-buy list. Packs are normally way too short for me but this one fit great. It had a modest frame to it, decent waist belt, lots of space...

It really depends on what you plan on doing. Most of my trips are just for a day or just for a weekend. So I can squeeze in my sleeping bag, ground mat, tarp, food (instant noodles and such), 2l camelbak bladder, a rain coat spare undies and a socks, and other little stuff. But I can make it all fit because My cooking set up all sits in a maxpedition 10X4 pouch on the out side and my thermarestis on the bottom.

I use a maxpedition Falcon II for 1-day to 3-day and even 7-day. It fit's all my needs perfect! Go light, go swift, go quiet ...except in Bear Country, then go LOUD and Cautious! LOL:D

There are several REIs near me. I shop there a ton. Just dropped a chunk of change on a Deuter ChildComfort III as a mater of fact.

After sombody suggested Osprey I went to their website and really liked the looks and info on Krestal 38. When I norrow down the field and start looking in person it will be on the list for sure.

Anybody have any expereince with Deuters? Two have caught my eye. The Futura Pro 42 and Aircontact Lite 40+10. Any input would be great.\

I went and looked and the Mystery Ranch packs. Nice packs anybody try the three day assult or any of its similar sized cousins. Someone suggested teh NICE Crew Cab but that was way more pack than I need.

Thanks for all the suggestions and keep them coming.

Mystery Ranch is run by Dana Gleason, the Dana in Dana Design. He's known for making a great pack that will carry a heavy load, but those packs tend to run on the heavy side. Look at the weight of that 3 day assault pack, 5 lbs. 1 oz. That's almost as much as a Dana Designs Terraplane which is a big pack (5800 ci).

Here's a couple of other choices. These are ultralight packs and they get some very good reviews on the Ultralight Backpacking Forum. I think my next pack will be one of the ULAs, probably the Circuit.

Again, it really depends on what you want to carry and what type of abuse you anticipate. On trail, you can get by with much lighter packs. I have a few different Kifaru packs, and they are heavier than most backpacking packs, but they've also been through more rough conditions...stepped on, thrown out of trucks/helo's, ratcheted down in a C130, sat on, pulled, kicked...more abuse than most packs will ever see; Kifaru hasn't failed me yet after too deployments.

However, I haven't tried a true backpacking pack since my early 90's Mountainsmith until recently with the Osprey pack. I'm quite impressed; I doubt it would handle the abuse of my Kifaru packs, but it's been pretty good off trail scambling and bouldering. I've been pretty impressed with it; good suspension, very lightweight, some nice features (I like the suspension, hip belt pockets, I like the side pockets for water bottles even though it has a hydration pocket/port; and the stretchable pocket on the back for jacket or pullover).

Let us know what you decide. The Osprey is just something I'm happy with, but the size is about perfect for you. I carry my essentials and have extra room to carry extra food or climbing gear; it would even be a good 1-2 night pack for lightwight camping.

BlackHills - Thanks for the heads up. A five pound pack did not seem heavy to me but as you pointed out it is. This is the kind of info I was hoping for since I have not been paying attention to pack design for the last ten years.

Rock6 - I'm looking for a trail pack at this point. I like the modular design of the militay but (I hate to say this) in this part of the coutry the hippies and tree huggers abound on the local trails and tend to freak out when military looking gear is on the trail. Not to mention most people seem to find my exterior looks and demeniar to be intimidating already. I don't try it just seams to be the way I come across. Of course if that keeps certain people from screwing with me or my family that is great.
If I find I need something bomb proof I'll keep the Kifaru and the like in mind.

I'm interested in the Fjällräven Vintage backpacks. They look oldschool but have air ventilation. Does anyone here own one?

That's a good lookin' pack. I thought I had the one I wanted, but I guess I'll have to buy another :)

I have a Kelty Redwing that I can't kill. About 3000 CU in. Big but I can tend to be quite prepared.

Go an REI and they will help you alot. The REI Lookout looks like a really nice deal. Throw sandbags in one and wear it around the store for a couple hours.

One of the best places for cutomer service in the world.

I bought and REI Travel(convertible) pack years ago, abused it, used it hard.
I took it back to the Lynnwood, WA REI to be repaired. I expected to pay for the repairs(I'd abused it and owned it for 6+ years) and they insisted on replacing the pack with a new one. I didn't argue. I got a brand new pack. 6 weeks later UPS shows up at the door with a box from REI. The repaired the old one and sent it to me.

I picked up a Kelty Redwing 3100 last week at REI on sale for $69. Kind of subdued green without looking tactical. I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

A bump for the Redwing 3100. I tried one out at Sportsman's and have put that on my list as well. Might be worth the trip to REI to save 20 bucks too.

The Kifaru X-ray looks nice:

There's also the Marauder (right) and Zulu (left). I'm really obsessing over the Zulu:

If you don't like PALs webbing there's also the Express:

I'm really liking the Zulu because it's a traditional ruck with no zippers and such. Plus it has the snow collar which they say can add 1,000ci if you need extra gear that trip, and can be cinched down very well for small loads.

Note to mods: I'm not a Kifaru employee, nor am I sharking for them, I just fell in love with their packs and can't quite decide on which one yet, but think they are a top choice.

I've got a Zulu, X-Ray, and a Pointman, and all are great, but the X-Ray and Pointman are my favorites.
