Day Packs

Yes, they are, I can only wish they were all mine.

Like I said, I'm obsessing over the Zulu, and it's probably going to be what I get, but I keep coming up with good arguments for the others as well. . .

Those Kifaru packs (and military packs in general) look nice but:
* too expensive
* too heavy
* all those Molle bands might be interesting for the military but they are useless to me and add weight

On the other hand what's really stopping me about many good "civilian"/mountainering packs is that they are only available in horrible colors like "electric blue", or "bright purple" or "glowing fushia"... Not that I look for camo, and in technical mountainering bright color might be useful, but for hiking those are just too outragrous.

That's why I listed the Express that doesn't have PALs webbing.
I don't mind some weight since I consider the thing that you carry eveything in as one of the pieces of equipment that should be bombproof.

Personally I like the webbing because I can use them as a three season bag, and add on a pod for a heavy sleeping bag in winter, a couple pouches with exta food and clothing in the event of a longer trek, extra canteens for desert camping/hiking, etc. Otherwise I'd have to have a pack that's too large for what I do most of the time, or have a small pack for backpacking/hiking , another for camping, and another for cold weather/extended stays. With a "strapped" pack, I can have one that is the right size for most of what i do and adaptable to the things done less often.

Exactly why I love the molle webbing - those kifaru bags are just wonderful!

Another vote for an Osprey. My Stratos 40 (2600 cui) has served me well as a fast-packing pack. It can easily carry 40 plus pounds of gear and not flinch.

i use a camel back hawg
or a mountainsmith approach II that i got for less than 30$ from sportsmans guide

the hawg is a really light daypack good for only really carrying a lunch and like a poncho but i can fit a weekends worth of gear on/ in it

the mountain smith i love for weekends ive even used it for a a weeklong trip
but the hawg is smaller that you wanted andthe approach fits the size and is comfortable

The north face terra 40, wrote a long review of it.........computer ate it so please do your self a favor go to www.thenorthface.com look it up you will not be sorry best all around day/weekend pack I have ever had and I've had alot has good color options and the most comfortable shoulder/hip straps I have ever tried on. used on Appelation trail a number of times

This is a great discussion. I got so caught up in it, I checked out a site Chiro75 recommended a long time ago, and this time, I actually ordered something.

The Camelback Commander is worth looking into. I find it can pack a tremendous amount of gear for its size and carries the weight extremely well due to a rigid plastic "internal frame" to help distribute and carry the load.
I bought mine HERE at Cabelas. The pack has recieved a lot of feedback as well to help answer any questions you might have.
Good luck with your search

Some I use that are fairly small but high performance:
Tactical Tailor M5 Medic bag- external molle for adds ons, built tuff and built in USA, hip belt is unpadded but it is for light loads.

Maxpedition- Baby Condor- nice small pack, external pockets on side for water bottles
Devil Dog- smaller but still anough for short hikes for me. I combine it with a Camelback hydro pouch

Above that I go to Spec Ops T.H.E. Pack or an old Black Hawk 3 day pack.

Whatever pack you decide on, make sure you can try it and return it if it doesn't work. Everybody's back is different, and even the best pack can be miserable if it doesn't work for *your* back. I went through several before I could find one that worked for me. I finally ended up with an old fashioned ALICE pack with frame. It's the most comfortable pack in the world for me, others hate it.

I'm into comfort, and don't care what it looks like. Tactical or not means nothing to me. When I'm in the boonies, people that would be upset by a "tactical" pack never notice it, they're too busy eyeing the gun on my hip...

I went through both REI and EMS's selections before settling on the ALICE (much to their chagrin :D).

I have to agree as to the comfort. I've never really had a problem with mine and for the price they can't be beat.
I even picked up a MALICE version 3 pack for deployments and it worked great. I've had it since '03 and it's still going strong.
Check it out:

How does that sleeping bag carrier work out for you?
Will it fit the entire MSS?
Does it stow easily if not in use?

Does Maxpedition make a 3 day pack..I had a Condor and a Falcon..they are to short for my frame. Gene

The sleeping bag compartment worked great. I never used the black portion of my modular and my cover/green insert along with a poncho liner fit perfectly in there. It's supposed to fit the entire MSS but I never tested it.
The sleeping bag portion can be sinched up using the three straps when not in use and I never had a problem with it. Well, other than it getting heavy as he** once I stuff it full. :o
Hope this answers your questions. If not just hit me up and I'll be glad to clarify.

MedOpsPogue,

Thanks for the links! That looks like a great system!

Not a problem. Tactical Tailor makes some pretty awesome stuff. It may be a bit pricey but it's worth it IMHO.

On a sad note, I read on their site that the founder, Logan Coffey, was recently killed in an auto accident. :(

I got a laugh out of this because it's so true. I'm pretty sure I could wear a Hello Kitty pack and still the only thing people would notice is the gun on my hip.

ETA: This is a great thread. It's nice to hear reviews from people who have used the packs.
