Oh yeah! That was a big problem when I started out. After a while, I realized I'm not out conquering the Alaskan frontier as much as I would like to pretend I was. I'm really just walking/scrambling around outdoors and sleeping outside. It's neither rocket science nor (what I typically do at this point) all that dangerous. Paying attention to stuff that weighs nothing is the biggest way to cut weight: be fit enough for your activities, let people know your plans when you go out, pay attention, stay found, take only well-considered risks, expand your knowledge base - thereby developing your confidence in dealing with unexpected situations.
Sure, shit happens, but many situations can probably be avoided with a preventative approach and sound decision-making. Like in medicine, prevention is often the best cure. My conversion to UL has probably benefitted much more from changing my mindset on going and being outside (in addition to its associated risks) rather than the money I've spent on lighter gear.
