New every day carry

When I get an M4 EDC from Ban, it'll be quite a nice pair :)

That is a lot of stuff man! I use to carry a bunch of stuff in my pockets when I use to wear baggier cargo pants. I just don't like my jean pockets all bulged out these days. Most of my survival gear is in the trunk along with full sized titanium prypar, K5 Tomahawk, half mask respirator with vapor filters, Smith 45acp Revolver with moon clips, and a level2 vest.

Speaking of which.... I probably should update my water filtration tabs, medicine, and antibiotics.

Eh, not so much. Everything there has proven useful again and again, and it's never been a problem to carry. Haha, most of my family, friends, and acquaintances know I'm the one to turn to when there is need for a knife/scissors, pen, flashlight, flat/phillips screwdriver, bottle opener, fire, etc. Some stuff doesn't get used all that often, like the zippo, pry-bar, whistle, and firesteel. But I never drop the last two because when you need em, you really need em. I've been refining what I carry for a while; the current set-up works well for me

Anyway, I don't have the luxury of a trunk... I commute to the city and back every day for work. All I have is my backpack and my pockets....

That is a good point. Why did you decide on a zippo vs smaller peanut lighter?

In a urbun environment.... I worry most about the human element during a disaster. Next on my list is air quality followed by water.

I actually used to carry a peanut lighter on the keychain, the flat bottom stainless steel one too. But I've had it come unscrewed in my pocket enough times to become annoying, and I don't like cranking down the cap and possibly damaging or deforming the o-ring. A leaking peanut lighter is even more annoying than an unprotected zippo since you can't carry much fuel in the peanut. I actually have the same problem with the flashlight, but for now, I have to live with it. In addition, the easiest way for me to carry a peanut lighter is on the keychain... and it sort of became the last straw on that camel's back. The peanut lighter, with its tiny flame, would really only be a last resort item for me. That role is filled by the firesteel, so I felt ok with eliminating that redundancy on the keychain. Not as quick, but if I REALLY need fire and have a little time, the firesteel will get it done. I never have to worry about "when's the last time I filled this thing?" with the firesteel, and it works in all conditions.

Also, I figure if I'm carrying a lighter, I might as well carry the full size one for a useful amount of fuel and a larger flame. The peanut I carried weight half as much as the zippo (56g vs. 28g), but I'm pretty sure it offered less than half the amount of full the zippo could carry. So for now, zippo wins... but I find myself leaving it home more often than I carry it. If I carried the peanut, it goes where my keychain goes, so I'd at least have a quick source of ignition at all times... I might put the peanut lighter back on the keychain sometime down the line, but for now, I've been ok without it.

A bic was another option I toyed with, but I don't like how easily it's blown out in wind, and how easy the trigger can be depressed if carried in a pocket with other stuff. I do carry a bic or two in my backpack though, so I usually have one in reach on a typical day.

I like the bics as well. I have them all over the place. Yep, I have had the peanut lighter unscrew itself more than a few times. Gets really annoying. The bics are pretty darn reliable and holds the fuel much longer than a zippo. I smoked for 15yrs and have gone through my fair share of bic lighters. They were my lighters of choice because they were cheap and reliable ;)

Damn! County Comm is dangerous. I just spent 200 bucks on all kinds of stuff ;)

I love my zippo, but I find that the fuel evaporates after a few days (a week max). I wish zippo could make one that didn't run out of fuel without using it.

I agree, Bics are reliable  At least, as long as you don't carry them along with a bunch of other stuff that might depress the trigger :D And it's not too cold out. I have bics stashed all over my gear...in my edc pack, in my hiking pack, in the car kit in my gf's jeep....

And yeah, county comm is dangerous! I rarely get stuff from there anymore; I can't afford how easy it is to spend on that site.

awc, you can use a ranger band (small loop of bicycle inner-tube) around a zippo to prevent, or at least drastically slow, that evaporation  See my pic above. My fuel lasts much much longer now.

brilliant! I'll have to add that to the "to buy" list when I get back from my summer in Beautiful British Columbia

You don't even need to buy it :) Just go into your local bike repair shop and ask them if you could have a few of the discarded tubes they're going to trash or recycle. Most places won't mind giving them to you. I went to my local REI...two or three tubes and I'm set for years for $0

Try to get different sized tubes if possible; the one I use for my zippo was cut from what was probably a road bike tube. I use the same size band for other small-item-tasks, like keeping pairs of batteries together and aligned. Larger tubes (from mountain bike inner tubes) are useful in securing gear to sheaths or keeping larger gear together. They also make a good starter fuel for emergency firestarting....

I wish I could find a really small tube that would wrap around my peanut lighter....
