Death Chat!!

That kelty peregrine is a sick pack. Probably my favorite day pack right now. I am considering getting a few more to be used as bailout bags.

Their sling packs are also very nice for more day to day stuff. I like the fact that they don't look like a purse.

Alright, Sunday, Big Basin Redwoods State Park, let's aim for hitting the trail by 9 at the latest. 8's better but I don't know if you guys want to get up that early, even with daylight savings this weekend. I might be bringing a friend or two along. It'd be nice to check out your place Mike, we'll drop you a line after  Don't know if I can make it if I have friends along, but i hope to.

Just FYI, parking is $10...:barf: I know, but *shrug*.... And layer up; it gets a bit chilly in the morning this time of year, and the trail is mostly shaded. Not noticeable when you're moving though. Careful on the drive too, if it's cold enough this weekend, you might run into some black ice patches in the hills. I've slid a time or two on the road over.

Nate, nice haul!

I drink a lot while I hike, so I usually bring 4L for this hike (3L in camelbak and 1L in canteen) and that's enough for me to drink whenever I feel like it. It's usually just enough for me to run dry at the very end of the hike. I'd say if you don't tend to drink much while hiking, 2L would probably be ok, but you'd be better off with 3L.

If you prefer to filter or drop tabs, then there are creeks we'll pass by which should be fine (except for one, Waddell Creek, which is or was reclaimed waste water). There are probably some springs or something I don't know about as well, Mike and Jocelyn (sorry if spelled incorrectly, Mike :o) would know for sure. I usually just carry water on dayhikes to avoid the hassle.

Depending on weather, I like to drink a lot as well. 3L should be more than enough for me. I did half dome with 3L as well. But then again I drank nearly a Liter right before we even hit the trail ;)

The Kelty backpack has a slot for hydration reservoir, i should pick up a 3L one tonight/tomorrow.

Yup, that's the way to do it: pre-load. I usually leave water in the car for pre-load and for drinking when i get back.

Yeah, the trail is mostly shaded, relatively humid, and it'll be cool. Sweating varies by the individual. I sweat a lot when hiking, so I like to drink. One can always dump water....

Huy pick up the Platypus Big Zip 3L. This one

Thanks for the recommendation, i like that you can open it up to clean inside pretty easily.

In need of a new jacket, thinking of this REI Rauk jacket, http://www.rei.com/product/815134/rei-rauk-jacket-mens. It's kind of similar to the TAD one but at half the cost.

Looks good. Similar to the ranger hoodie LT minus the pockets. I like the TAD gear stuff but hard to argue with half the price tag.
Have you looked at the Patagonia R1 hoodie in the similar price range? I think that is a more versatile piece.

Alright, so let's meet in the parking lot at the park tomorrow, around 8:45am. We'll hit the trail at 9. Who's going? Ban (+1?), Huy (+1?), Jeremy? I'll be there with a coworker, see you guys there :) EWeather's lookin nice!

How long does it normally take to do that hike? I suppose we should probably pack a light lunch/brunch or something?

Somewhere around 5-6 hours if you just hike straight through at a decent clip. More like 6-7 or 8 if you want to take it easy, take pics, enjoy the sights, sit down for a leisurely lunch, etc. I'm not in tip-top shape at the moment, so i'll probably be taking it relatively easy and really enjoying the quiet. Definitely pack a light lunch, I usually bring a sandwich and a snack bar or lil ziploc of trailmix.

Seems I pulled one of my hamsprings yesterday at the gym so I dont think I can do this length hike today. You guys have fun.
