Deep carry clips? Why?

I've never actually used a pocket clip as part of my criteria to purchase a knife. For me anyway, tip up, no coating, sub 4 inch, saber or flat grind, decent steel, by a reputable manufacturer are my only criteria. As far as aesthetics, some of the after-market clips are wayyyy better looking. In regards to discreet carry, other knife people may notice, but the unwashed masses probably won't.

Speaking of clips, has anyone ever looked at the Spyderco clips and thought that it was designed more for purchase enhancement than for clipping on to your pants pockets. Whichever hand you grip a Spyderco, one's fingers naturally fall into place, reducing any chance of hot spots, and enhancing one's grip of the knife. The ergo's of a Spyderco clip are not accidental, and I suspect a lot of thought went into this unique design. I have taken off the clip on a Delica just to see if it was really needed, and realized that it felt unnatural without the clip, and the clip did indeed enhance knife purchase.

If anything a low ride clip makes it easier for me to remove my knife. Finger on the end of the clip and pull up. My question would be why don't Mfg's all make low ride clips ?

Nice, but what kinda clip do you have on the Jarbenza?

Nice, but what kinda clip do you have on the Jarbenza?

Now that is a good question. The way you deploy a Jarbenza wait that's top secret info! Lets just say a Jarbenza deploys itself. That ball chain is there for a reason.

It's not just about discretion, it's also about comfort. Knives that sink deeper into my pocket tend to feel more comfortable and don't interfere with other tasks as much.

Also, deep carry wire clips don't get caught on things that much since they just slide right off. They take a "bend but not break" approach and I like that.

So I recenty put a BM 810 clip on a mini Griptilian t0 see how I like it. Jury is still out but here are some obsevations.
IMO;
The clip sticks out and into your hand when using the knife and makes it less comfortable and therefore less useful.
The clip is holding onto less of my pocket than either of BM's standard clips that fit the Griptilians too. So it feels less secure.
The knife is harder to get out of my pocket since it is lower with less to grab onto.
I like the look of the clip itself.
I think they have their place but are a bit "trendy" these days.
Flame away boys!

A clip on you pants pocket is a knife. Everybody who cares knows this. Those who don t care don t matter.
I prefer small light clips like Spyderco s wire clips. Completely functional and light weight. I ve never lost a knife clipped to my pants.

To the OP saying that deep carry clips are all the rage; This is nothing new. Sog's been using them for 15+ years.

Living in the paranoid state of Illinois, having a short low carry clip is nice. I much prefer them to standard clips.

Just tried the low rider clips on almost every BM that I have that came with normal clips. Not one felt better in the pocket and removing from the pocket as thy did with the regular clips. So for me and my EDCs no low rider clips.
I also noticed on the Mini Grips the lower clip caused the thumb stud to catch the pocket on the way out, destroying the fabric and seam.

Deep carry clips make me cringe...

I put one on my griptilian years ago when I worked in public a lot and I didn't mind it. Now I work construction and use my knives a lot more and I've found that I hate everything about deep carry clips. The 0562cf was my only exception, and I still hate the clip.

I personally prefer deep carry, though it's not a deal breaker for buying a knife. I like deep carry not to conceal my knife but to draw less attention to it from some people who get all worked up if they see a knife. For this I also prefer a darker matte finish. It's also less likely to have it accidentally slip out with more of the weight of the knife lower in the pocket. I've never found it harder to get at a knife on a deep carry clip. Some knives can also be a bit "pokey" if they ride high and you need to crouch or bend over, or even while sitting. On some knives it can also improve the grip comfort, but I suppose on some it's the other way around.

^^^Have you really had someone get upset ("worked up") by seeing your clip and thinking you have a knife? I have openly and unabashedly EDC in the open and in all that time never had someone "react" to my carrying a knife.

To deep or not to deep; that is the question... ;):D:p

On some knives the deep carry clips work well and on others not so much in my experience so it's really down to end user preference.

I have zero preference. I have plenty of both.

A well designed clip is WAY more important than if it's deep or not.

A good deep carry clip is better than a crappy standard clip and vice versa.

For me it depands on the design but i dont need one. I do however prefer them because while i carry my knives i like keeping them in good shape. Having it ride low in the pocket prevent the actual handle from brushing up on stuff. Also the deeper it is in my pocket the less lokely it is to come out of my pocket without my knowledge.

I also don't understand it. I'm just not into hiding my knife that I can legally carry while making it more difficult to retrieve from my pocket.

Agreed.

What I really don't understand is a lot of these knives are marketed as law enforcement or "tactical" knives. If I need a knife in a hurry, I don't want to be digging in my pocket for it. With that being said, I see the logic in some of the pro-deep carry arguments.

I don't even use the clip on my knives when I pocket them...they just go into the pocket, nobody knows, problem solved. I don't even "clip" my knives to my life vests when fishing, they just go into one of the zippered waterproof pockets. So, if you're all concerned about hiding the fact you're carrying a folder, just stick it in an available pant pocket.
I'm with Al. Want to be discrete drop it in a pocket. Like the saying goes "out of sight, out of mind".
